Buckinghamshire / 50 Wellington St, Slough
« on: Sunday 27 July 14 13:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find out about an address in Slough and wondered if any of you have come across it before. Minnie Elsie Claridge was born 2 May 1899 at 50 Wellington St, Slough to Mary Louisa and William James Claridge. Both her parents were from around Ramsbury in Wiltshire, yet for unknown reasons Minnie was born in Slough. By August 1899 she is back in Ramsbury to be baptised. By 1901 she is living with her grandparents and her parents have disappeared.

I wanted to try and work out why she was born in Slough and also possibly trace her parents and therefore looked up 50 Wellington St on the 1901 census. The building was unoccupied but the building next door is simply recorded as 'Salvation Army' with no further info or inhabitants. Is there some connection? I know people who were born in institutions often used a nearby address on certificates to avoid the shame, could something similar have happened here? I believe there was also a British Orphan Asylum on the same street, could that be connected? Minnie wasn't an orphan, and her parents were married, but something strange went on that left her with her grandparents so I wouldn't be surprised if her birth was connected to one of these two places.

Any advice, ideas, other places worth looking etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

Lancashire / Suicide or an accident in Salford?
« on: Monday 07 April 14 20:31 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I am trying to find out more about the circumstances surrounding the death of my ancestor John Talton Mason. He died 20th November 1859 in Greengate, Salford from inflammation of the asophagus caused by drinking muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid). He apparently suffered for 12 weeks. He was a coppersmith, so would have had access to the acid.

What I am trying to find out is whether he imbibed the acid intentionally or by accident. There are no comments made on the death certificate either way. Does anyone know where I should look to find out any more? I have made basic investigations into newspaper records but was told that the local Salford newspaper only started after this date. Might there be any court records for something like this?

Thank you for your help. :)

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Dating a painting
« on: Thursday 06 February 14 14:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to date a painting that has been discovered, and wondered if any of you knowledgeable people could help. The stamp on the back appears to read C R ?, Manufacturers, ? Rathbone Place, London. If anyone can decipher the surname that would be extremely helpful in tracking down the date.

Thank you :)

Worcestershire / Battenhall Mount VAD Hospital WW1
« on: Friday 08 November 13 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I am researching Battenhall Mount VAD Hospital, now St Mary's School, Worcester as part of an event organised by the George Marshall Medical Museum and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund to commemorate the WW1 centenary. I am trying to find out more about the soldiers and nurses stationed there, discovering what life was like for them and what their personal stories were. I would be very grateful for any information/stories/memories anyone has or has heard about the Hospital and if you know that someone in your family worked or was a patient at Battenhall I would love to talk to you. Please either reply to this thread or send me a PM.

Best wishes,
Elissa

The Common Room / Anti-Slave Trade petition online?
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 22:29 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

I've found a couple of articles (e.g. www.culture24.org.uk/history%20%26%20heritage/work%20%26%20daily%20life/race%20and%20identity/art45389)

that mention that a transcript of a petition against the slave-trade, signed in Manchester in 1806 was available online at the Parliamentary archives. However I've had a look and can't find this any more and think it might have been taken down. Does anyone know what happened to it and whether the names included on the petition are searchable anywhere?

Thank you :)

Suffolk Lookup Requests / Stonham Aspal Baptism Records
« on: Thursday 20 September 12 12:13 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I'm trying to locate two baptisms that took place in Stonham Aspal. They are:

James Aldous b.1794
Robert Aldous b.1808

I don't know who their parents were, or even if they were siblings, but I'm hoping they might be the children of Thomas and Mary Aldous. If they are there may be another son, Thomas, born around the same sort of time.

Does anyone have access to Stonham Aspal parish records, or know where I might find them online?

Thank you for your help,
Elissa

Edit: I have just found Robert's baptism in FindMyPast, to a James and Keziah, so not who I was hoping for. However James 1794 may still be a lead.

The Common Room / Missing marriage certificate
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 20:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I wondered whether anyone could help me locate a very elusive marriage. On the 1911 census William and Lily Claridge are living in Yew Tree Cottage, Cefn Coed, Vaynor, Glamorganshire. They claim to have been married 10 years, with no children.  William is from Shalbourne, Wiltshire born 1874 and Lily is from Bedminster, Somerset born 1876.  However I can't find any record of their marriage.

I believe William may actually be William James Claridge, who married Mary Louisa Payne in 1896 in Newbury, Berkshire. They had a daughter Minnie Elsie born in 1899 in Slough, Buckinghamshire. Her parents seem to have disappeared by 1901 and left her with her grandparents.

I want to try and see whether there is a marriage certificate for William and Lily as this might shed some light on Mary Louisa.

Thank you for your help,

Elissa

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Ramsbury Parish Records - Completed
« on: Wednesday 22 August 12 20:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I wondered whether anyone has access to Ramsbury baptism records for the turn of the century. I am looking for the baptism of Minnie Elsie Claridge, born May 1899 and probably baptised shortly afterwards in Ramsbury. Her parents were William James Claridge and Mary Louisa Claridge nee Payne.

Thank you ever so much,
Elissa

England / Probate granted on all wills?
« on: Saturday 09 June 12 16:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Please could someone explain whether probate was granted on all wills or just some. I ask because I know that my great great grandmother left a will when she died in 1949 in Honiton, Devon. However, I have searched on Ancestry's Probate Calendar and can find no record of her. I wondered whether maybe probate wasn't granted on her will, and therefore it wasn't included in the calendar, and so there is no record of it. Any explanations/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Elissa
