England / DAVIDSON family research help!
« on: Tuesday 03 June 14 05:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi friends,

To find out more about my great grandfather Thomas DAVIDSON b.1907 I started a New Zealand thread, which has now been completed: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=632236.0

Now I need help tracing my roots further into England. According to the 1911 Census Thomas' father was John Thomas DAVIDSON, aged 43, born in London, Chelsea. Working back from free Census records on familysearch.org I've located potential hits:

1881 [edit: ages were wrong]
John T DAVIDSON, age 12, birthplace Manchester, Lancashire
Father: John DAVIDSON, age 47, birthplace Manchester, Lanchashire
Mother: Ann Davidson, age 45, birthplace Manchester, Lancashire
Sister: Annie Davidson, age 9

1871
John T DAVIDSON, age 2, birthplace Manchester, Lancashire
Father: John DAVIDSON, age 37, birthplace Scotland
Mother: Ann Davidson, age 35, birthplace Manchester, Lancashire

Could someone please lookup Census records to clarify my searching? Also, knowing the date of death for John Thomas DAVIDSON, b.1868 or 1869 would help me order his death certificate, as would any other information.

Many thanks from New Zealand  :)

Jared

New Zealand Completed Requests / Family mystery: Thomas DAVIDSON
« on: Sunday 20 January 13 03:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find out a family mystery. My G.Grandfather, Thomas DAVIDSON (no middle name, b. 20 May 1907, d. 26 May 1996) supposedly came to New Zealand at the age of 16. None of the family know why — he never talked about it, and never disclosed his parent's names. All we know is that he came from Rochdale, Lancashire, and that his father possibly died in the First World War.

I had a quick look at the UK 1911 Census online, but I'm not a member of any orgs so I could only do free searches. Another possibility is shipping records around 1923 (port of Auckland, as he worked on the Kauri Gum Fields, then as a marine engineer on the 'Duchess', and later became Superintendent of the Devonport Gas Works). I can look at these at Archives NZ.

Any help on the UK side of things would be greatly appreciated! Happy to provide further details of his later life it it helps.

Cheers, Jared

Hi again everyone,

Thanks again for all your previous help (here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,490834.0.html, and here: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,571472.0.html). My book on Philip and early NZ anarchism is due out next year at all good independent bookstores.

I have another tester for you all! I'm after NZ details on Johann Sebastian Trunk, b.1-11-1850, d.4-6-1933. Married Johanne Elizabeth Trunk. I found their gravestone in Geraldine, Canterbury here: http://www.timaru.govt.nz/services/cemetery/plot/13044

Johann was a militant anarchist who supposedly came to New Zealand around or after 1900 (I've placed him in London in February 1900). He was prominent in radical circles, associate of Johann Most and part-time editor of Freiheit.

What I want to know more about is his time in NZ. He's not on Papers Past at all. I'd love to know when exactly he came to NZ, via shipping records. And I wonder if any relatives are on Ancestory/this website?

Once again, I'd be very grateful of any help on this matter, and would help my book considerably.

Cheers!

New Zealand Completed Requests / COMPLETED: Syd Kingsford: contacting his descendants
« on: Wednesday 28 December 11 01:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi again everyone! Thanks for your help with my previous requests. I have another one...

I'm trying to get hold of the descendants of Syd (Sydney?) Kingsford (d. 1967, age 78). He was based in Christchurch, but it seems he moved to Wellington around 1917/18. He was a carpenter, and in CHCH worked with his father Shrewsbury Fredrick Kingsford. His mother was Mary Williams (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=TS18830221.2.7&srpos=1&e=-------100--1----2S+Kingsford--)

This article seems to be about him, and says that he married in 1916 and had 7 children: http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=NZTR19300828.2.22.1&srpos=7&e=-------100--1----2Sydney+Kingsford--

Syd played a prominent part in radical labour circles in Christchurch leading up to the First World War, and as part of my research on this topic I would love to track down his family and any possible papers they might have.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi team,

I'm trying to get hold of the descendants of Percival Bartle Short (d. 1944, age 63). He is buried at Karori Cemetery, Wellington, and according to a reference I'm trying to follow up for labour history research, he and his family were based in Johnsonville.

Percy played a prominent part in radical labour circles in New Zealand leading up to the First World War, and as part of my research on this topic I would love to track down his family and any possible papers of Percy.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers  :)

England / 1891 Census (and Yiddish newspapers) help!
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 00:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'm a labour historian based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I'm trying to find out when my research subject left Latvia for Glasgow. I have him placed in Glasgow in 1897 (marriage) and 1901 (Census).

A lot of immigrants came via London, so I would love for someone to check the 1891 Census to see if he was there then, as this will narrow down my dates.

His name is Philip Josephs, occupation Tailor. He was Jewish. His father was Simon Josephs, and his mother was Rachel Josephs.

Thanks!

Also, does anyone read Yiddish? And feel like going to the British Library newspapers?  ;D

Europe / Latvia Jewish records: 1876 - 1896
« on: Tuesday 05 July 11 23:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I'd love some general advice on where and how to look for records in Latvia between 1876 - 1896? Latvia was then part of Russia...

I'm researching Philip Josephs, who was born Feivel Ben Yacov, on 25 November 1876, in Liepaja (Libau). He was a tailor, and left for Glasgow sometime before 1896.

I'd love to find shipping records for his journey, or better yet, find out where he went to school or learnt his trade.

I realise this is a big ask, and resigned to the fact that I may not find much—but it's the best place to ask!

Thanks

Lanarkshire / Philip Jospehs: NZ's first anarchist via Scotland/Russia?
« on: Saturday 23 October 10 04:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi there,

I'm researching early anarchism in NZ. After receiving info on Philip Josephs in the New Zealand Forum: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,490834.0.html it turns out he was based in Glasgow, Scotland. He then came to New Zealand via Western Australia.

Joesphs started the first anarchist collective in Wellington, New Zealand. He was originally from Russia, as the 1901 Census indicates:

1901 census SCOTLAND
32 McKinlay Street, Gorbals, Glasgow

Philip Joseph, head, b. 1877 Whithorn, Russia, Tailor
Sophia Joseph, wife, b. 1877 Whithorn, Russia
Jeannie Joseph, daur, b. 1898 Glasgow
Fanny Joseph, daur, b. 1899 Glasgow

How would I trace his arrival in Scotland, leading back to when he left Russia? Any help would be amazing as I'm new to this.

Thanks!

Jared

Hi everyone,

First time poster. I'm researching early anarchism in NZ (1890-1920) and need some help!

Philip Josephs was a Russian born Jew who started New Zealand's first anarchist collective in Wellington, 1913. Throughout the First World War his mail was censored and his office raided by Police in 1915 (I have Police files from Archives NZ). I would like to know more about his arrival to NZ, and even contact his living relatives. This is what I already know:

He was Naturalised in 1921 (NZer's Naturalised pre 1948). From this I know that he was born in Libau, Russia. His age is given as 44, making his birth date 1877.
He lived in Wellington, worked as a Tailor from 1906 to 1917 (Wises Street Directory & Papers Past). Not listed in 1918 but back in 1919. All records of him in Wises end in 1922.

Rumor has it he skipped the country in 1917 to visit Russia. He may have gone back there in 1922/23...

What I would love to know is:

 a) how Russian's predominately came to NZ. Was it via the UK? Are there shipping records for Russians arriving in NZ?
b) any records of Josephs arrivals or departures. There is evidence of him speaking at meetings in 1906.
c) links to his family today.

His name is spelt 'Josephs' with the 's', not 'Joseph' if this helps.

Look forward to any advice people can give me! Learning this as I go along so bear with me.

Jared
