Somerset / James Smart of Stringston
« on: Sunday 01 January 23 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
James Smart (born 1845/6 in Stringston, Somerset. The last info for him I can definately trace is the Census info for 1861. He is a lodger and groom in Holford Somerset. I can find some possible references in the USA and it would be quite likely that he followed his brother Clement to America.
Thank you for any help/pointers.

Elizabeth 1838 -1838 seems she died as an infant.

United States of America / Charles Higgins from England (lost at sea?)
« on: Saturday 31 December 22 09:59 GMT (UK)  »
Sometime ago I tried to search for Charles but without success. I have had some wonderful recent help and thought it worth just trying again.
Charles Higgins born 1863 in Crewkerne/Chard area of Somerset. His family lived in the village of Tatworth. His father George was a policeman and his mother was Charlotte Ring.
1866 christened Charles Paul Higgins at Tatworth.
There is a possible mention re the local military in 1884. The last definite knowledge I have about his whereabouts is witnessing a will on the 16.7.1883 in his role as a sols clerk for his employers Messrs Tucker and Forward of Chard, Somerset.
At his brother George inquest in May 1889 (Tredegar, South Wales) it was mentioned a brother had come over from the USA some 4 years earlier for a visit. Although hersay, it does suggest he went to the USA.
My grandmother told him he had drowned. This was some 50 years ago and I wished I had asked her for the background. I can find no details of his entry or departure from this country or death. He appears to have disappeared. I have family photographs for many members of the Higgins family, but nothing for him. I would have expected to have come across something if he had survived. Any lines, thoughts, would be much appreciated. Did he change his name? Why did he leave a respectable job? What happened to him?   Mark

United States of America / Clement Smart Montana
« on: Friday 30 December 22 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have been searching my Smart family line from Stringston in Somerset. Solomon and Ann Smart moved to the Street area of Somerset. Their son Clement Smart was born in Stringston. In 1881 he was a boot stock keeper living with his parents at Walton nr Street. He then disappears. I believe he may have moved to Montana and married an Alice from New Jersey. Any help with his death, occupation, wife's details and children would be a big help along with immagration details. Very many thanks Mark

p.s. If any Smart's pick this up I would be delighted to fill in any blanks from Somerset side of the family.

Monmouthshire / Tredegar former cottage in Tanypont
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 20:45 BST (UK)  »
In 1889 a relative George Higgins killed his partner and himself in Tredegar. The cottage was part of a 4 house terrace that was turned into 8 small dwellings. These cottages were between a quarry and St Josephs and higher than Red Lion Square that was to the right.
I have attached the newspaper image of George that no doubt has no resemblemce to him but all I have and the newspaper image of the cottages. I recently went to Tredegar but couldn't find the area and wonder if there is a photograph of these former cottages where the horrible murder took place.

This photo was with my mum's bits and pieces. No idea who she is and any help with the date might help to narrow it down. Very many thanks.  Mark

Dorset / Paul Family of Over Compton
« on: Tuesday 07 December 21 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have an interest in the Paul family of Over Compton.
My research has found a William Paul marrying Elizabeth Gulley in Over Compton 11-4-1814. It appears that a daughter Jane was bapt 14/5/1815 in the village. She was to marrying George Higgins in Bradford Abbas.
So far I have found 3 siblings for Jane all with the name James bapt 7-9-1817, 30-8-1818 and then 15-5-1826 all at Over Compton. I am guessing that the older 2 died but haven't found a record of their deaths. Any help regarding the family would be most helpful. Thanks Mark
