United States of America / Marriage Bann Forbid? What does this mean?
« on: Tuesday 17 July 12 18:25 BST (UK)  »
I recently found this marriage bann for my 3x Great Grandmother, Mary Conlin in the Massachusetts Vitals Collection. Date is 1842.
I can read what it says, however I do not understand why the bann was forbidden and am seeking any ideas to the meaning of this record?

Mary Conlin went on to have 2 daughters with Richard Quinlan, Elizabeth Bridget in 1844 and Mary in 1846. Mary Conlin dies in 1847. She is buried at St James Cemetery in Taunton Massauchsetts as wife of Richard Quinlan. I have not found a marriage record for them as of yet.

My dilemma..and of course there is one! is that my 2x Great Grandfather Patrick Kearney names Mary Quinlan and Dennis Kearney as his parents on his marriage certificate. Kearney is my family name. I am trying to get backwards in my Kearney line. According to this marriage bann, Mary Conlin is not listed as a widow, so perhaps she was not married to Dennis Kearney when she gave birth to Patrick in March, 1839 in Ireland? Apparently she was living in Taunton Massachusetts by 1842 at the latest.

Any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, or should I just give up at this point...would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much
Deb

Cork / CORK: Denis Kearney d. 1839 Kilcrea Abbey, Ovens
« on: Tuesday 31 January 12 16:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all. I found this record on another site:

Denis Kearney, d. 1839, buried Kilcrea Abbey, Ovens Cork

I was wondering if anyone could tell me how I may go about finding more details for this record?
I have searched and googled endlessly and have only found scattered records for this cemetery.
I would be grateful for any suggestions/help.

From this record I am trying to determine if this Denis Kearney is my ggg grand, father of Patrick Kearney my gg grand, who was born in 1839 in Ireland. Patrick's mother, Mary McNulty went on to re marry Richard Quinlan, moved to Taunton, Massachusetts and had 5 more children starting in 1844. I have yet to find a marriage record for Denis Kearney/Mary McNulty either. They were RC, born in Ireland, but still have no real clue where in Ireland. ??? (I know..almost hopeless ;D)

I am trying hard to figure a way to go back in my Kearney family line in spite of this minor setback of my ggg grandmom remarrying early on in my gg grandfathers life.  ::) It kind of cut the genealogical umbilical cord to my Kearney research!

Ireland / Looking for Patrick Joseph Kearney & Family
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 03:21 GMT (UK)  »
I have been searching in vain, (but never giving up!) to find out where my gggrandfather and his descendants came from. Patrick Joseph Kearney b 1838 (according to family history) (or 1826 in England according to the 1871 Canadian Census) Following US census records list him from Ireland. Relatives (now deceased) were never sure if he was born in England or Ireland. According to Drouin (sp?) records of his marriage to Ellen Coyle, in Montreal Canada 1868, his parents names were Denis Kearney and Mary Quinlan (although writing was hard to decipher it did state that they were both deceased by 1868 at the time of Patricks marriage to Ellen). I know his whereabouts from 1861 on, he served with the Fighting 69th in the US Civil War. I have no idea when he went to the USA before then, or how he ended up in Canada in 1868.
He was a Carver and Gilder by trade. He died in NYC in 1916. The names Patrick, Edward and Francis are surnames repeated in following generations. I do not know if he had any siblings.
Other associated family names: Coyle, Leahy, Prendergast, Nolan, Whelan, O'Reilly, Doyle, O'Leary.
Any suggestions on how to find out if he was born in England or Ireland and where his parents Denis Kearney/Mary Quinlan came from? Big brick wall! But I am delighted to have found this site!
Thank you! Deborah
