Both born in Teversal Notts but moved to the Sheffield area. John married Mary Ann Oldfield in 1898 and had at least four children in the Oughtibridge area. Ruth married Charles Uttley and also had at least four children. They are not directly related to me but I have a photo of them and their mother Hannah (nee Taylor) taken in Lap Water, Birley Carr in about 1884.
If anyone is researching these or connected families I would be happy to share a copy of the (fairly early) family group (plus pony).

Worcestershire / William Edge, miner, d 1853 in accident
« on: Friday 01 November 19 15:50 GMT (UK)  »
William born Kingswinford 1840 is my half ggt-uncle. His death cert shows he died as a result of an accident at what looks like "Wallace Pit" in the Dudley district. I have had a look for records of the death (newspapers) and coroner's report (without success) and cannot find any reference to a pit or pit owner of that name (elsewhere, yes, but not Dudley).

Any assistance on any of the questions will be gratefully received and shared with relations in Australia.

Worcestershire / Alfred and Mary Edge, Stourbridge 1884-88
« on: Saturday 18 July 15 12:54 BST (UK)  »
Alfred Edge was my gguncle. He was born in Stourbridge in 1859 and married Mary Edwards in Dudley Oct 1884. He emigrated to Australia in 1888 and was followed by Mary a little later. They had one son in Queensland in 1892. Sadly, Alfred was killed by lightning in 1906. His death cert shows he had two daughters and one son deceased. I assume they were born and died in UK. I am in contact with his descendents in Australia and am looking for possible children who would fit the bill. For example, there are Thomas Henry b/d 1886, Beatrice b/d 1887 and Annie b/d 1888. Short of buying certificates for all possible Edge children, I wonder if anyone has access to appropriate baptism records. Problem is, I don't know where they were living as they are between censuses! He was in Mill St, Stourbridge before he married. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Australia / Nellie UNWIN married ? KEY
« on: Thursday 28 November 13 09:45 GMT (UK)  »
This is a follow-up to the Machen Unwin thread. One of Aaron Unwin's children Nellie married ? Key probably in the early 1900s. She died in Bankstown 23 Jun 1969 and had a large family. However, I have not been able to find her marriage - I think her husband predeceased her from the wording of the death notice. Has anyone a source other than the online BMDs which may help?

Australia / Machen Unwin d1944 Sydney and Machen Aubrey Unwin kidnap victim
« on: Wednesday 20 November 13 14:53 GMT (UK)  »
Machen Unwin b 1887 Ecclesfield Yorks married Frances Eleanor Mott. He died Sydney 27.1.44 and Frances died 12.10.56. They had a son Alfred E who was killed in the  RAAF over Germany in 1944. I have found via Trove a mention of Machen Aubrey Unwin, manager of the East Hills Golf Club, being kidnapped in 1970 as part of an attempted armed robbery. Any connection? Any more Unwins with the Machen forename?

My ancestors came from Ecclesfield, Yorkshire and were Machen (forget the spelling change, that was in 1916). One of my *gt aunts married Joseph Unwin. The family used Machen as a forename many times. I am in mail correspondence with an Unwin in Michigan and we are related via Joseph Unwin and Susannah Machen. I have LOTS more info if there is anyone out there with a connection.

Worcestershire / Jemima Edge b1841 Stourbridge
« on: Monday 10 December 12 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Jemima is my half-great-great aunt. She was the daughter of Joseph Edge and Phoebe Whitaker. Via the Newspaper Archive I found she was convicted of stealing "a suit of clothes and other articles" from her father in Stourbridge in 1863 and was sentenced to 3 months' hard labour. In August 1863 she appears again in the Worcester Journal as a prostitute and a witness in a robbery case. This was in Worcester (Silver Street, Watercourse alley and Lowesmoor Terrace are referenced). I have not found her after that in "findmypast" or "familysearch". Can anyone tell me if there are prison records available for this period and which gaol she was probably incarcerated?

Some of her relations went to Australia and it is possible she went there too. I'll try my Aus connections for that!

Australia / Queensland death Shadrack EDGE 1930
« on: Saturday 31 December 11 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
I have found in Trove a ref to Shadrack Edge, who I think was my great grand uncle b Stourbridge Worcs 1853. He died on Oct 8 1930 in Rockhampton. The news article refers to a court case by his child Mary Amelia Harridge who I believe was born as M A Edge  22 Nov 1891 in Longreach, married Herbert John Harridge 5 Sep 1914 in Rockhampton and died 15 Aug 1944 in Townsville. If this is the right Shadrack (he disappears from UK census after 1871), it might explain why my mother and her parents (she was Shadrack's niece) emigrated from Sheffield to Queensland in 1920, only to return to UK in 1921.  Shadrack was a farmer (grazier) and my grandfather had worked in the washery in a coal mine, so the work and the weather would have been very different. I have one photo of my grandmother and mother in front of a General Store in 1921 - but where it was I have no idea: I just remember Rockhampton as the place they settled (briefly).

Gloucestershire / 38 Knowles Road Gloucester
« on: Tuesday 13 September 11 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have a Kelly's or other directory (or electoral rolls) for this address from 1921-23? My grandfather/mother and my mother returned from Brisbane to UK in 1921 and gave this address, although they came from Sheffield (and my mother was there in school in 1924). This Gloucester connection is new to me, although my grandfather's family (Cattell) did have an offshoot in the county in late 1800s.

Worcestershire / Harriett Lizzie Cattell b1889 Kidderminster
« on: Monday 15 August 11 16:43 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather John George Cattell and his sister were born in Kidderminster and moved from Amblecote to Sheffield in the early 1890s. Harriett Lizzie is with the family in 1901 but I have failed to find her in 1911, or in marriages/deaths/passenger lists. I wonder if she returned to Worcs and if anyone recognizes the name from their tree or other Cattell links. The origin is John Cattle b Droitwich 1817 and Mary Roberts b Catshill 1816. They had nine children and at least 19 grandchildren. Children were Ann Maria 1838, Alfred 1839, George 1841 (my link), Sarah Jane 1843, John 1846, Mary Elizabeth 1848, Louisa Ellen (Helen) 1851, Joseph 1853 and Samuel 1856. John died Stourbridge 1888 and Mary Bridgnorth 1891 - they had both been farm bailiffs, as was at least one son.
