« on: Saturday 16 April 16 07:05 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find information on David Anderson above, his Wife Sarah Stephenson (b 1826) and their 2 sons Alexander b 1847 and William b 1851.
I can find the family in Bromley, Middlesex in 1851 census, but cannot find them after that.
David's brother's William Alexander and Alexander Anderson had both moved to Australia, as did a sister Matilda.  But family in Aus do not know of David.

Can anyone help?

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Alexander Anderson d 22 Sep 1850
« on: Saturday 23 January 16 20:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to determine the parentage of this man.  I believe him to be born in Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland in 1777 to William Anderson and Agnes Couper.  However other Ancestry people have either no parents or different parents.
He had been living in Poplar/Bow/Bromley London, but at the time he died he was in Kensington.
Occupation:  Carpenter/block maker.  Married to a Mary, born Worsley, Surrey.  Ancestry folk have a marriage to Mary Greatach but this does not match my Alexander.
I have his Will, but of course this does not give his parents.
If I obtain the death certificate will that give me his parents?  Is there an easier way of dong that other than having a hard copy sent from UK.  (I am in Australia).

Any help would be appreciated.

Armed Forces / Royal Navy 1790's
« on: Sunday 20 December 15 04:48 GMT (UK)  »
I have a "Memorandum of the Services of Lieutenant William Anderson" obtained from National Archives.

The first entry is as shown in the attachment in 1798.

I would like to know what the rank is.  It looks like Ord & A.B.  Any ideas on what this is.
This also appears to be his first entry, yet I have a letter he sent home to his mum on 5 April 1796 from London, where he mentions he is on HMS Orwell under Captain Walker.

At the time of the letter he was 16 yo. - quite old for a boy to join the Navy - particularly one who is moving through the officer.  He was listed as Midshipman in 1803 and became Lieutenant in 1806.

On this same Memorandum, the last entry is as Lieutenant on HMS Prospero under Capt J.H. Godby in North Sea (5 Oct 1813 to 18 Jun 1814.

He did not marry until Jun 1826 (in Fife, Scotland).  So what was he doing between 1814 and 1826?

Is anyone able to fill in some blanks for me for the following questions?
1.  What does Ord & A.B. mean
2.  how can I find out when he entered the Navy, and where would the records be before 1798.
3.  When he died in 1837 he was still in the Navy - Lieutenant on half pay, but was the Prospero his last ship?  What happened inbetween 1814 and 1826.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Louisa(b 1821) and Harriet Spencer (1814)
« on: Sunday 04 October 15 02:26 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any information about these 2 ladies.
Parents are Robert Spencer and Ann Kent
Robert died 1841 before the census in Kingston upon Hull.
Wife Ann (Spencer) is listed in 1841 census in Holy Trinity, Yorks with children Frederick, Walter, Louise, Arthur.
This is the last I can find of Louisa - born Norfolk.

Harriet is not with her family in this census but probably also in Holy Trinity Yorks as a boarder.  Harriet, born Godmanchester.

Father Robert and brother Henry were Excise Officers and so moved around a bit.  Henry at this time was in Northamptonshire, but had also been in Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, and ended up in Norfolk.

I am assuming both women were married, but I can find no confirmation.

Is anyone able to help?  Regards Ruth

I am looking for the above John and his family.  I cannot find them on any census in England so am thinking they may have migrated.  John was a leather seller

Can anyone help?  The family is . . .
John Brunswick Austn b 1805
Wife - Elizabeth Anderson b 1814
Children:
John b 1835
Charles Brunswick b 1836
Eleanor Eliza b 1837
Alfred Duncan b 1839 but baptised 1846

Due to the last baptism, I should at least be able to find the  1841 census, but cannot.  Any help would be appreciated.

Armed Forces / Midshipmen Royal Navy c1790-95
« on: Thursday 02 April 15 22:40 BST (UK)  »
I have a letter from a relative Midshipman William Anderson to his mother in 1796 when he was 16 years old.  He was commissioned Lieutenant in 1806.  I would like to find when he entered the Navy and when he left.  1796 is the earliest evidence I have for him.  I also believe he may have been "sponsored" by the Earl of Balcarres (Fife, Scotland) as there is a letter to the Earl in Nov 1809 from the Ship Excellent under Capt John West.
The latest navy evidence I have for him is 4 Dec 1811 when he captured 2 ships - Langudociene and Carton while "in command" of HMS Sultan.  Not sure if he was actually in command of Sultan - he had been serving on the ship in the last year.
He married in Fife in 1826 and when he died in 1837 was listed as Lieutenant on half pay.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how I might find his entrance into the Navy and the date he left or last ship he served on?  Appreciate any help you can give.

William Anderson is my 2xGreat Grandfather.  He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy and I have a fair bit of information about him.  Although I would like to know when he joined the Navy as Midshipman - He was commissioned Lt in 1806.

More importantly, I would like to know something of his twin John Anderson.  His brother William died 1837 Fife.  But apart from baptism records I can find nothing of John.  Of course it doesn't help having such common names.  Given age, I am not sure whether he would have occurred in a census.

Can anyone help?

Midlothian / Address - 105 Grassmarket, Edinburgh 1871 - what is it?
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 23:29 BST (UK)  »
I have a relative located at this address in 1871 census.  There are 70-80 people at the same address, ranging from children to 60 yo.  Most of the adults seem to have work - dressmaker, joiner, labourer etc.
I thought it might have been a poor house/workhouse, but as most of the adults have an occupation I now doubt it.

Does anyone know what it might have been at that stage?
Regards Ruth
