Lancashire / Byway & Summers surname
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 10:53 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone please tell me whether it was "usual" for a family to change their surname. My ancestor William Byway born 1800 had (amongst others) 2 sons William summers byway and Henry Byway. What is odd is that Henry at some point seems to take his motherS surname and becomes Henry Summers and his children become e.g. William Henry byway summers.
Is there any way to identify if this was formally changed? Or indeed any other way I can find out why they took Summers as the main surname???

Many thanks fir any help!

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Marriage Look up - BYWAY/SUMMERS
« on: Friday 09 September 11 22:22 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to confirm the occupation of an ancester William Byway (to help me confirm what I think are his parents) I haven't been able to locate anything concrete other than the following and I'm hoping that someone my have access to or can provide me the information of how I can find it??

Groom: WILLIAM BYWAY
Spouse: ELIZABETH SUMMERS
Marriage: 27 NOV 1821 Saint Andrew, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England

I am able to "prove" the link between this William and direct descendants - Son William Summers Byway b.1824 but would dearly love to see a copy of maybe the parish record or something that might detail his occupation.

On his son William Summers byway's marriage cert to a Sarah Bingham in 1846 it states fathers occupation is a Butler. So I'd like to know if he was a butler in 1821 or something totally different.

The Common Room / GWALIA Consolidated limited
« on: Friday 02 September 11 22:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi, not sure if this is the correct place for this, but whilst rummaging through a plethora of fascinating items relating to my great grandfather (including things like WW1 trench maps - so interesting!) I came across a share certificate for gwalia consolidated limited. It seems my GGF bought 50 shares at 2/6 each in 1904. Googling gwalia comes up with information on a gold mine in Australia, so I presume this was all around the gold rush time. Could anyone shed any further light on GWALIA for me? Or does anyone know much about the GWALIA Gold mine/ share purchase. Was the purchase of shares at this time the "normal" thing to do. And I suppose I should ask the awkward question of could it still be worth anything? (probably the certificate it's elf is worth more!!)

Armed Forces / Regiment Movements - 3rd Dragoon Guards
« on: Monday 25 July 11 09:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Could anyone please tell me the best way/ place to research the movements of the 3rd Dragoon Guards? I'm particularly looking at between the dates 1800 - 1850. I understand that there is a museum (in Edinburgh I think), which is impossible for me to get to.

Or does anyone happen to have this information to hand! that they'd be happy to pass on!  ;D

Many thanks

Alex
