Census and Resource Discussion / 1921 census brick wall
« on: Monday 11 April 22 21:34 BST (UK)  »
I've been looking for my grandmother, Dorothy Joan Shambrook, on the 1921 census with no success. She was born on 1 July 1919 to Mabel Ann Shambrook from Hereford. (Mabel was unmarried and no father was named on Dorothy's birth certificate). We know she was in the Hackney Union workhouse infirmary as a baby - she is on the settlement register dated 23 Oct 1919 and ceased to be chargeable 20 Jan 1920 (not sure why she ceased to be chargeable?). She was later fostered then adopted.

I've tried different variables and wildcard entries but to no avail, and have even done an institution search for the Hackney Union. I'm not 100% sure she was still in Hackney by 1921 but she's not showing upon a wider search either.

I'm out of ideas so am seeking some advice please...any search tips or advice gratefully received!!

Hello,

I came across this photo amongst my dad's belongings after he died and is the only one I've ever seen of him as a child. He is in the front row, with the white satchel (according to the note on the back) and typically, that's where the worst of the crease is in the photo!

Any help improving this would be hugely appreciated.

Many thanks,

Rosie

Lincolnshire / More recent death record
« on: Tuesday 07 September 21 18:50 BST (UK)  »
Evening  :)

I'm helping a distant cousin of my husband with their shared family tree. She lives abroad and has no contact with her immediate family. She was informed that her mother passed in Lincolnshire in 2017 and would like to know for her own mind what she died from; however hasn't been able to find a death record to be able to order a death certificate. I've also searched Ancestry and can't find anything  :-\

Please can someone kindly suggest how else we might be able to search for this?

Thank you!

Dorset / Elusive William Plank Allen b.1882/5 Broadstone
« on: Sunday 14 March 21 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I have started working on my mother in law's tree, and up until now it has been very straight forward and simple compared to my family as they are all from my local area and stayed local. However, I have hit a complete brick wall with her grandfather William Plank Allen (sometimes recorded as William Plant Allen).

I have found him on the following records:
marriage to Ethel Flora Best in 1905 in Poole,
1911 census in Parkstone,
birth records of his 4 sons - all in Poole,
WWI RAF airman record and RN register of service.

His dob is given as 17 May 1882 on his military records and 1885 on the 1911 census. He was born in Broadstone, given as Canford on one record (which is the parish Broadstone came under at the time of his birth).

Here is where my problem comes in - I cannot find a single record of him before 1905 or anything on him (or his wife) after his 1918 military records....no birth/baptism records, earlier censuses, passenger lists or death/burial records (for him or his wife). I've tried searching Ancestry for first & middle name only, surname only, hunting Allens in Broadstone, Canford and Poole areas on the 1891 and 1901 censuses and searching the Dorset OPC and Free BMD. I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps he changed his name in someway but can't find a close similarity.

I'm planning on ordering their marriage certificate to try and get his father's name but any help or further suggestions would be massively appreciated as I have reached a point where I feel like I'm going round in circles!  ???

Thanks  ;D

Monmouthshire Lookup Requests / Death look up please: Florence CHRISTOFFERSON
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 18:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I would be really grateful if sks could look up the death of Florence Louise Christofferson (nee Shambrook). She was born on 11th March 1886 in Caerleon and married Charles E Christofferson in 1917. I have found Charles' death in 1930 but can't find Louisa.

And if anyone is feeling especially generous I'd be v. interested to see if they had any children too  ;)

Thanks in anticipation....!

Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark / Sir Joseph Delon?
« on: Saturday 25 September 10 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have recently been exchanging information with a distant relation regarding the Le Vesconte family. This rellie has a family diary with an entry stating that Alexander Percival Le Vesconte (born 1874 in Bedminster, Bristol) was the grandson of Sir Joseph Delon. We know that Alexander was the son of Daniel Le Vesconte (born 16.9.1828, St Helier) who was a shipbuilder and Alice Deslandes (born 1846, St Helier).

Information I have been given previously by kind rootschatters shows that Daniel's parents were Daniel and Elizabeth Esther (nee Nicolle) and Alice's parents were George and Cloice (nee Le Feuvre). So, I am not sure where this new name fits  ??? Have tried good ol' google but found nothing...... Would be grateful for any snippets anyone can offer!

Thanks

The Common Room / Illegitimate birth c1919
« on: Tuesday 24 August 10 09:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi rootschatters

I am hoping sks can give me some ideas for further research. My grandmother was born illegitimately in 1919 in Queen Charlotte's Hospital, London. She was illegitimate and she knew nothing of her father. She was 'adopted' by two sisters but all we know is their name, we don't know how old she was when she left her mother, how the guardinaship was arranged, etc, etc.

My mum would like to know any more she can about my grandmother's early life. I was wondering if there were particular charities or organisations that helped arrange care for illegitimate children at that time? We have already tried Barnardos and Salvation Army  ???

Wales / Le Vesconte family
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 21:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am researching the Le Vesconte family tree. They were originally from Jersey but Daniel (1828) and Alice moved to Bedminster. They had 7 children:

Louisa Deslandes b1865, Jersey (my g-g-grandmother)
Jessica Nicolle b1866, Jersey
Alice Esperanza b1869, Bedminster
Romulus Horatio b1871, Bedminster
Percival Alexander b1874, Bedminster
Linda Le Feuvre b1875, Bedminster
Gerda Victoria b1878, Bedminster

Sometime after Daniel and Linda died in 1880 the family moved to Monmouthshire and Alice remarried.

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who knows anything about the descendants of Daniel and Alice's children. Most ofthem stayed in or around the area, and Romulus (AKA Horatio) moved to Cardiff.
