Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Edward Simonds (Symonds) - Abbots Bromley
« on: Wednesday 31 October 07 16:23 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder whether anybody can help solve a problem which I have encountered as to what happened to Edward Simonds (also known as Symonds) as he just seemed to disappear.

What I do know is that he was born in 1858 in Atherstone, Warwickshire, and lived there, working as a hatter, until 1891 at least.

Then, for a period (but I don't know how long), he ran the Goats Head Inn in Abbots Bromley with a friend.  So far I've not been able to find any Directory listing him as licensee, though.

The 1901 Census reveals his wife, Mary Olivia Symonds, with her five children at their home, Bentilee Cottages in Abbots Bromley, but no Edward was present.  She described herself as 'married'.  A thorough search for Edward in that census has not turned up anything.

The next information that I have found is that Mary and the children emigrated to the States in about 1903, but Edward never did emigrate, and in the 1910 US Census Mary described herself as a widow.

One rumour in the family is that Edward died in a farm accident, but I have not been able to find any appropriate entry on St. Catherine's Register for the death.

Does anyone have any access to Abbots Bromley records which may shed any light on this man's fate?

Thank you for reading this.

US Lookup Requests / Mary Olivia Symonds
« on: Tuesday 16 October 07 21:07 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone kindly help?

I'm trying to trace the death of Mary Olivia Symonds (formerly Simonds and nee Fox).  She was born c.1851 in Atherstone, England, and emigrated to the USA in 1903/05 (depending on which census you rely).

In 1930, Mary Olivia was living in Linwood borough, Atlantic county, New Jersey, as the head of the family, a widow, and with her were her son, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.  She was then aged 79.

I would like to discover when and where she died if at all possible.

Thanks in anticipation.

Cork / Marriage in Ireland - 1850s
« on: Sunday 26 November 06 00:57 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder whether there are any records, generally available, of marriages which took place in Ireland, probably Co. Cork, in the 1850s.

I'm trying to locate the marriage of Daniel Hayes (b. about 1801) and Mary Evans (b. about 1820) in the early to middle part of the 1850s decade.

The couple, who were both born in the Cork area to the best of my knowledge, moved to England in c. 1856 when they started a family with the children being born in London.  They did not marry in England, so the presumption must be that they married in Ireland prior to emigration.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / Albert Silas George Fox of Sowerby Bridge
« on: Saturday 25 November 06 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone has access to the electoral registers (or whatever they were called at the relevant time) for Sowerby Bridge.

I'm trying to discover when Albert Silas George Fox was resident at, first, 10 Chester Street, Sowerby Bridge, and, secondly, at 15 Cleveleys Avenue, Sowerby Bridge.  The two streets are fairly close to each other.

The years in question are 1914 to 1924.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Occupation in 1871 Census - Help, please
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 11:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi - help please.

As I do not now seem to be able to post a copy of the relevant part of a census page on this site, I wonder whether anyone would be prepared to look at an 1871 Census page and proffer advice on what a person's occupation is?

I have tried to decipher the occupation on many occasions and cannot solve the riddle.  What is particularly infuriating in this instance is that every other person's occupation on the page is crystal clear.

The person I am interested in is John Boyle who was living at Medlock Street, Manchester. The full reference is:-

RG10 / 4038 / ED15 / f.30 / p. 54 / Household Schedule no. 269.

John Boyle is the third entry on the page and he is head of the family.  His occupation comprises just one word.

I hope someone can help bring some light to this problem.

Thanks,

Richard

Technical Help / Ancestry.co.uk
« on: Wednesday 12 July 06 00:18 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Is anybody else having the same problems with Ancestry.co.uk and Ancestry.com as I am currently experiencing.

For the past two days (or evenings to be more correct as that is when I go online usually) I have been unable to access either of these two sites.

All I get with both is a blank page but with the internet code at the top - nothing else however I try to get the site up (directly or through links).

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else is encountering problems and, if so, whether anyone knows when the matter is likely to be resolved.

Thanks,

Richard

Help.

I'm wanting to post a photo but when I click on the reference to adding a picture below the main text box nothing seems to happen - I don't get a browse facility.

Am I doing something wrong?

Can anyone advise, please.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Marriages of Hartshorne People c. 1808
« on: Tuesday 09 May 06 12:16 BST (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone is able to help.

I understand that in the early 1800s not all churches were licensed to perform marriage ceremonies and that residents of some smaller towns and villages had to travel to a nearby larger town to tie the knot.

Does anyone know where residents of Hartshorne in Derbyshire would have married in 1808 or thereabouts?

Thanks.

Richard

Shropshire Completed Look up Requests / NBI - Whitchurch - 1860s.
« on: Sunday 07 May 06 16:53 BST (UK)  »
I wonder whether anyone with access to the NBI for Shropshire could do a look-up for me.

I am seeking the death / burial of Elizabeth Stockton in the 1860s, probably in Whitchurch.  She would have been aged 80+.  I cannot tie her down on the St. Catherine's bmd Index as ages were not entered pre-1866, by which time I think that she was almost certainly dead.

At the time of the 1861 census, she was living at Pepper Street, Whitchurch, the town where she had been for most of her life.  Her age varies from census to census, but in that census she was recorded as being 85 (which I think could have been overstated by anything up to 5 years.

Thank you for reading this post.
