Dumfriesshire / charles Walker Scott
« on: Thursday 10 January 19 21:20 GMT (UK)  »
I am doing research into the Scott Family who were instrumental in establishing the Tweed Industry in Dumfries. I am having some difficulty in establishing the position regarding Charles Walker Scott. I know that he was born in Manchester about 1845 and married Mary Lorimer in Dumfries in1869. He lived at Woodbank on the Edinburgh Road Dumfries and appears on the 1871 census at that address. However he does not appear to be on the 1881 or 1891 census. He is recorded as withdrawing from the partnership of Walter Scott and Sons on the 12th June 1895 and he died in Australia on the 27th September 1898 .If anyone can shed any light on the missing period from 1871 -1895 it  would be greatly appreciated

I am doing research into the Scott family who were pioneers of Tweed Manufacture in Dumfries Scotland.

One of the family was exiled from Dumfries and sent to Australia as a " remittance man" with an allowance of 1500 per year.. He went in the 1890's and died at Manly, Northern Beaches Council , New South Wales on the 23/9/1898. I wondered if anyone has any information on him as he seems to have vanished or been deliberately written out of the family records.

I am trying to find information on Walter Scott born Dumfries 1816 and apparently went to work in Manchester before returning to Dumfries to build a tweed factory in 1857. I think that he might have worked for, or with family members, in textiles but have no evidence. His father Robert Scott born 1780 also went to Manchester and returned to Dumfries to set up a hosiery business in 1810. likewise I have no information on his missing years . Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Dumfriesshire / Robert Scott- Master Gardener
« on: Tuesday 21 August 18 20:20 BST (UK)  »
I am doing research into Robert Scott founder of the Tweed Industry in Dumfries. In this connection I have found that his father , who die in 1824 , was a  Master gardener who may have worked for the Duke of Buccleuch in Langholm about the 1780's -1790's. I hope to look into the Buccleuch archives in Edinburgh but would welcome it if anyone has any information on the family. His wife was Mary McMichael and is buried alongside him in Tinwald Churchyard in Dumfries

Lancashire / Robert Scott -Tweed Manufacturer Dumfries

I am trying to trace the Manchester connections of the above and hope that someone can help. Robert Scott( 1781?-1861) married Jean Lindsay In Dumfries in 1804. the wedding details say that he came from Manchester and that his wife to be was the daughter of Manchester Weaver.

A book about  the Scotts mentions that Robert's father was  Master Gardener but does not mention any other family members. I note that there was a firm in Manchester William Scott (Cotton Spinners) at 51 Hart Street, Manchester and also a William Lindsay at 22 Dale Street Manchester at the early 19th century and wonder if there was any connection with Robert Scott and his wife.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to obtain information about John Lindsay who was a weaver in Manchester around 1800. His daughter Jean Lindsay married Robert Scott who later became a successful Tweed Manufacturer in Dumfries. Robert seems to have worked In Manchester before 1810 and had a daughter Mary born there in 1806? I wondered if he had worked for his father in law or whether this was just a coincidence

I am doing research into the above and wondered if his wife Elisa Ester Tracey died in India. His daughter Elinor was born in Madras in 1832 and his obituary states that he was formerly of Calcutta. I have been unable to trace her death in England
