Perthshire / Cumming Families in the Parishes of Fortingall and Blair Atholl
« on: Friday 16 February 24 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
One cluster of families by the name of Cumming / Cumin lived around the Kinloch Rannoch area, where parts of four parishes met - Fortingall, Logierait, Blair Atholl and Dull.

Although the OPR of Fortingall does not commence until the 1740s, and some pages are damaged, the Blair Atholl and Logierait OPRs mention Cumming families much earlier

The Cumming marriages and earlier births have now been indexed, and the genealogies have been mapped out based on the available evidence.

Unlike the Stewarts and Robertsons in the area, the Cumming families did not adhere to the traditional naming pattern for their children (eldest son after the paternal grandfather, eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother etc.)

Some branches were skilled millers and spread out to work the various corn mills.

We hope that our research will be of use to Cumming descendants.  If there are obvious errors or you have additional information, then please contact us.  The link to the Cumming Index is:

Perthshire / 'Harry' Stewarts in Lochaber N.S.
« on: Friday 22 December 23 14:30 GMT (UK)  »
We have given an update on John 'Harry' Stewart and his brother Robert 'Harry' Stewart who were mentioned about 10 years ago in the topic "Robert Stewart and Isabel McGlashan in Lochaber N.S."

The update has not triggered the original topic to come to the fore, but descendants may be interested now that they can trace their lineage back to about 1500!

Perthshire / Tragic event and bad coins
« on: Thursday 10 March 22 21:35 GMT (UK)  »
The Blair Atholl Kirk Session minutes record an interesting but most tragic event …………..

31st March 1771
The Day's collection as appointed, amounting to £26 3s 3d Scots was given to (widow) Cecil Robertson in Wester Baluain, a poor woman that had two of her children slain by the fall of her house upon them, and herself bruised.

9th June 1771
The Session appointed 18s Scots to be given weekly to Cecil Robertson, in Wester Baluain, by reason of the bad half-pences in the collection made for her, when her children were slain.

It would seem that the silver coins had been clipped around the edges but it is not clear whether some of the Blair Atholl folk were doing this, or if the coins had been given to them as part of a payment for goods or services.

Getting rid of a ‘dodgy’ coin would not have been easy and, considering that they were made of silver, giving it to the unfortunate widow was better than giving her nothing.  Of course, the widow could not use them either, so the silver was re-cycled at a loss to the Kirk Session’s Poor Fund

26th April 1772
The Treasurer had sent 7s 8d Sterling of bad half-pences to the founder in Perth, for which he had only received 1s 4d Sterling at 4d per lib (pound weight), so £3 16s Scots was to be deducted from the Poor Fund.

Perthshire / Deaths in Blair Atholl parish
« on: Saturday 19 June 21 17:58 BST (UK)  »
The early Blair Atholl Kirk Session minutes record when they had to assist poor people by paying for a coffin or 'dead clothes'. From January 1757 the deaths of more affluent people are recorded through payments for the use of the parish mortcloth at their funerals. The loaning out of the fine mortcloth was both popular and a useful source of income for the parish 'poor fund'. In 1760 the Kirk Session purchased a second mortcloth of a courser material which was made available to the less well-off for a smaller payment.

We have started to extract and catalogue these entries as they provide a rough date of death which may be useful.  Currently we are working on the 1760s.

So, no more tedious trips to Edinburgh.  Well done ScotlandsPeople - much appreciated!

Perthshire / Perthshire Militia List, Blair Atholl 1804-05
« on: Thursday 28 January 21 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
This Militia List (1804-05), contains the names of married militia-men from the area around Blair Atholl, their wives, number of children and place of residence.

We found the following entry helpful:

Ritchie, George;    Robertson, Janet;   3 children;   Res: Mualich;   Capt. Chas. Stewart's Shierglas Co.

a) This confirms that George Ritchie in Mualich-more married Janet Robertson, his second wife.

b) As the couple married in 1803 and their daughter Elizabeth was born in 1804 (and died unmarried in 1890), then the other two children must have been from the former marriage.

c) There were four children from the first marriage: Isabella (1793-1864); George (1796-1850); Margaret (1798 - ?); and John (1800 - ?). So we can now stop looking for Margaret and John as they must have died in childhood.

There are over 150 families mentioned, so other entries may be of interest.

Perthshire / Ritchie families in Blair Atholl, Dull, Moulin and Logierait
« on: Sunday 24 January 21 23:25 GMT (UK)  »
We have been researching the Ritchie (various spellings) families living in the parishes of Blair Atholl, Dull, Moulin and Logierait.

Obviously there is a dire lack of resource material prior to 1720, but we have pieced together the evidence that we do have so that it makes some sort of sense. When additional resource material becomes available again we may need to modify our work but until then .........

We think that virtually all of the Ritchies can be traced back to 3 men living close to Blair Castle in the late 1600s, and one man in particular.

Also we have indexed all of these Ritchie families to make life easier and save your 'credits'

www.borenich.co.uk/Ritchie_Index.html

We've included two small tales of local 'colour'.  Firstly, how Isabel Ritchie in Kincraigie tried to obtain a cure to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Secondly, how George McDonald and his wife Elspet Ritchie probably 'did the right thing' 40 years after the births of their children, without the local minister finding out.

Perthshire / McIntosh and Tause families in Blair Atholl
« on: Monday 18 January 21 15:06 GMT (UK)  »
The Roll of the Duke of Atholl’s Fencible Men, 1705-06, lists several men by the name of Tawse or Tause.  In the Blair Atholl OPR the name is given as Tais and there are 20 baptisms under that name from 1718 until 1740 when it disappears.  For a long time we had wondered if the name was an alias for McIntosh, but the Roll of Fencible Men lists tenants by the name of McIntosh as well as Tause, so this was in doubt.

However, after a lot of searching we have the answer, where the same person is mentioned in the Session minutes and the OPR.

Blair Atholl Kirk Session minutes, 5th June 1748

Duncan Robertson in Balinfhuarain appeared and gave an execution against Ann Anderson, spouse to John Gray in Toldamh, for raising scandalous reports upon him. Janet McFarlane, spouse to Donald Frazer in Blair, also Janet Taus, spouse to Angus Stewart in Neither Drumnacrich, also Elspeth Richie, spouse to Alexander Fergusson in Nether Drumnacrich were called as witnesses upon oath of the said Ann Anderson's uttering such words to their disgrace.

Blair Atholl OPR, baptisms

Angus Stewart and Janet McIntosh in Toldamph,  Christian, 8 Mar 1743
Angus Stewart and Janet McIntosh in Balinloin of Blair,  Robert, 24 Oct 1745
Angus Stewart and Janet McIntosh in Nether Drumnacrich,   James, 5 Jul 1748
Angus Stewart and Janet McIntosh in Balinloin,   Ann, 16 Nov 1750

So anyone with McIntosh ancestors in this part of Perthshire should also search for Tause in its various forms.  We hope this helps!

Perthshire / George Moon, Riechappel, Blair Atholl
« on: Wednesday 04 March 20 21:51 GMT (UK)  »
With the exception of the Moon families associated with the Rev. John Moon of Newtyle (1790-1828) who can be traced back to John Moon in Errol, all of the others in Perthshire and Angus appear to originated from half a dozen families living close to Blair Castle in Blair Atholl parish.

We are in the process of indexing all of the Moons (easy bit) and elucidating their relationships (difficult to say the least).

Here is our 'take' on George Moon in Riechappel of Glen Bruar. Comments and additional information would be appreciated, especially from outside of Scotland.
