Canada / Researching James Calvert born 1803 in Dumfriesshire Scotland
« on: Sunday 31 March 24 09:22 BST (UK)  »
James Calvert emigrated from Scotland to Canada and married Marie, there are various spellings of her surname, Denshaw,Dunning, Dearing etc from Ireland while living in Canada.

Are there any Calvert historians that are part of this group?

My GGGrandfather was Francis Calvert and I believe that James may have been a half sibling of his.

Dumfriesshire / Alexander Jardine - Hosier/Sock salesman
« on: Sunday 25 February 24 07:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for a date of death for Alexander Jardine in Annan, DF. He married Jemima (Jamesie) Calvert on 23 November 1829 (SP) and she was alone in the 1841 Census noted as a Widow. Would there be Death records for Annan during this period? Or perhaps a good Jardine Family Tree site? Nothing coming up on Scotlands People or Ancestry.  I calculate that Jemima would have been aged about 42 at the marriage date.  :)  Regards, June

Dumfriesshire / Scroggs Mill and Latimer Lettimer Lottimer
« on: Friday 07 July 23 11:08 BST (UK)  »
George Latimer and Agnes Graham were married and resided at Scroggs Mill, DF, in the mid 1800’s.
Their headstone is in the Tundergarth Graveyard, also detailed on the headstone is their daughter Agnes Lottimer who as far as I can research was their daughter christened Nancy in 1836.

Her age/date of death recorded on the headstone is off. However researching her I can only find reference to a claim for support for her illigitimate daughter Agnes born 1860 whose father was John Campbell. (Not the John Campbell and Agnes of the Glasgow area.)

Her half brother William and Jane, children of George Lettimer and Anne Murray emigrated to New Zealand.

I thought that Scroggs Mill was a single building/farm however was it a village?

There are an Agnes and Catherine Lettimer in Wigton, Cumberland who fit the sisters approximate age however there are also other Lettimer people there.

Would anyone know the area or Latimer, Lettimer, Lattimer, Lottimer family history?

Can anyone advise me where to find the names of the people buried at the Legerwood Cemetery during the mid 1800’s. I know that the headstones have been recorded but the family that I am looking for is not on this database.

Many thanks, June

New Zealand Completed Requests / Duncan Burial Site
« on: Monday 25 February 19 01:18 GMT (UK)  »
We have Charles Duncan (Seaman and Bushman/Sawyer) aged 23 marrying Margaret Snoddan aged 21 in the Office of the Registrar, Dunedin, on 22 November 1858. I have been unable so far to find their shipping passenger entry into NZ.
The couple lived in the East and West Taieri areas and had children, Alexander 1862, 1866? Peter 1868, Charles 1869 and maybe Mary 1871. Son Alexander moved to the West Coast where he passed away young in 1897.
Charles and Margaret could have moved to the West Coast as there is a death for a Charles Duncan , Bushman, in the Orowaiti Middle Cemetery in the Buller Region.
Son Peter lived in the Clinton, Otago area and Charles and famly were buried at Tuatapere, Southland. I cannot find a Margaret buried with either.
She features in a couple of online Family Trees but the researchers do not have her date of death or the cemetery that she is buried in.
The possiblities that I have considered is that she could have remarried or returned to Scotland but it is probably unlikely that she left NZ when she had children with families here.
Does anyone have this couple in their family tree?

Dumfriesshire / William Smith from the Middlebie Parish
« on: Friday 22 June 18 10:31 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have Smith ancestors in the Middlebie Parish in 1848?

We have the Banns and Marriage of William Smith and Margaret Calvert in the Dalton Parish Records and I understand that they are in the OPR records for Middlebie but I cannot find this on Scotland's People. Date was proclaimed 26 Nov, and ? Dec. Married 8 Dec 1848.

William appears to have moved South with his family and is possibly in Prestwich, Lancashire, England census in 1861. He may have been aged 36 in the census. Private Coachman.

First child was Mary, (Margarets Mothers name) second was James, Margaret, Annie, Francis Calvert Smith (after Margarets father) Elizabeth Hammond Smith. Ann was born in England and I have not yet found Elizabeth. Other births, baptisms are recorded at Dalton, Dumfriesshire. We have found Mary working at the Harrytown Hall Chesire in the 1871 census, William died before most of the family emigrated to NZ.

At each census record 1851,1861,1871 there was a Smith child with Grandparents at the Inn at Dalton.

Any hints on how to research Middlebie would be appreciated.

Cheshire / Harrytown Hall Bredbury Stockport
« on: Wednesday 13 June 18 11:09 BST (UK)  »
Would anyone know whether there are any historical records held anywhere for Harrytown Hall?

I have Mary Smith, born Dalton, Scotland employed there in the 1871 census. From there I cannot trace her.

Have had a very helpful member from the Stockport Heritage Library advise me that they do not hold any records. Also the FHSC could not assist.

Regards, June
