Cork / Patrick O'Callaghan
« on: Monday 22 October 18 17:45 BST (UK)  »
Obviously, this is a very popular name.

I have found Patrick O'Callaghan from Kanturk (where my ancestors came from) listed as dying on 5th Mar 1894 in Cork District Lunatic Asylum in the Civil Records - married, age 36.

I have also found the probate for Patrick O'Callaghan who died 5th March 1895 in Cork, address given as Blarney Street, Cork.  Beneficiary is his sister Ellen.  His occupation is listed as a cutter - my ancestor came from a family of stone cutters.

The date is the same, but a year apart.  Is this just coincidence or could it be the same person with an explanation why one of the years is incorrect?

Many thanks

Mike

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Ellen Nagle
« on: Tuesday 22 August 17 10:04 BST (UK)  »
I have found the probate details of my aunt Ellen Nagle (nee Devereaux) - died 20 Feb 1983 in Selsey, West Sussex.  Probate was granted 14 June 1983.

I can't find her death registered anywhere.  Is there a reason it wouldn't have been registered?

She was almost certainly a Roman Catholic, quite possibly born in Ireland.

Her husband was Garrett Nagle - 16 Oct 1915 (Co. Cork) to 29 Jun 1992 (Selsey).

They were married in 1937 and spent much of their married life in Ealing.

There is a Helen Nagle registered in 1983 in Ealing, but she is buried with John Nagle, another relative of mine, so I have ruled her out.

I would like to find the birth of my great grandmother Lizzie Nagle (nee Callaghan / O'Callaghan).

She married Maurice Nagle in 1912 at the Roman Catholic church in Castlemagner.  Her name is Lizzie Callaghan and her father is Patrick O'Callaghan.

Her name on all 4 children's birth records that I can find (born in Ballyclough) is Lizzie Nagle formerly Callaghan or O'Callaghan.

I can't tie her down anywhere else, so don't know if she is officially Elizabeth or Eliza or Lizzie.

However, there is a Mary Callaghan (father Patrick Callaghan) who married a Patrick Nagle in 1908 at the Roman Catholic church in Castlemagner so I have assumed this is her sister and her husband's brother.  I have found this family on the 1911 census, which gives Mary's age as 23, so born around 1888.  This gives several possibilities for their parents with births registered in Kanturk and Mallow between 1886 and 1890.

Any thoughts on where I could look next?

Many thanks

London and Middlesex / Lizzie Nagle death / burial
« on: Wednesday 26 July 17 10:14 BST (UK)  »
My great grandmother was Lizzie Nagle (nee Callaghan / O'Callaghan).  She grew up in Ballyclough, Ireland - a Roman Catholic family.  She married in 1912 and had at least 4 chidlren.  Her husband died in Ireland in 1928 - she was still alive.

Several of her children moved to the Ealing / Brentford area.  One is buried in the Greenford Park cemetery and another in the South Ealing cemetery.

My mum tells a story that her mum told her that her mum (i.e. my great grandmother Lizzie Nagle) died during a visit to the family in England (presumably Brentford / Ealing), but no one would pay for her body to be sent back to Ireland, so presumably her death was registered in England and she was buried or possibly cremated in England.

I'd like to find her death / burial details.  Any advice on where to start?  I can get to London fairly easily, so could for instance browse records at the LMA or go to cemetreries.  Where should I be looking?

Ancestry.com etc. appears to yield nothing.

Many thanks

Mike

My great great grandmother Jane DOUGLAS (occasionally DOUGLASS) was born around 1858 according to most sources I have found.  However, I have been unable to find a birth certificate or baptism record and I can’t find anything out about her parents other than from her wedding certificate where her father is William DOUGLAS, an engineer.
She married Robert HAYWOOD in Whitechapel 1876 and they are both age 18 on the certificate and both living in Newcastle Street.
In the 1891 census Jane HEYWOOD is shown as age 32 and Robert is 33 (or possibly 30) and Jane’s birthplace is given as Newington, London (i.e. Surrey).
She died later in 1891 and is age 33 on the death certificate.
On the 1881 census I have found Jane HAYWOOD age 29 a brush maker b. London married to Robert age 31 sugar refiner.  All the details including their children fit apart from Jane and Robert’s ages.
There is a Jane Douglas on the 1871 census age 14 working in Newington as a servant which could be her.  Place of birth is Surrey Lambeth.
I can’t find her on the 1861 census but there appear to be significant gaps in that census around the Southwark / Lambeth area where she may well have been living.
I have investigated Jane DOUGLAS and DOUGLASS born in Surrey around that date as shown on Free BMB by tracing them through censuses and I have ruled them all out mainly because the father is not William – though I haven’t proven this by ordering birth certificates.
I’ve been using Ancestry.  Any ideas where I might go next to find out details of her birth or parents?
