Hello,

I have two photographs of relatives and have no idea about the date of the photos other than maybe late 1920s to early 1930s, but I may be wrong.

Reverse side of 'photograph1' says:
"North Bay Snaps Ltd., Scarborough. Further copies can be obtained by quoting index letter and number on photograph."

Reverse side of 'photograph2' says:
Further copies enlargements & frames from "snaps", kodak supplies, bridlington".

Do the codes have any significance?

Thank you

Gloucestershire / Hailes Church, Gloucestershire
« on: Monday 14 December 20 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
As I understand, Hailes Church (chapelry in the parish of Didbrook) was built in the 1100s, but from various online sources, registers only begin in 1814. Would baptisms and marriages have taken place there from the 1100s without being recorded until 1814? Or were baptisms and marriages performed at St George's, Didbrook?
Hope someone can shed some light on this. Thanks.

The Common Room / Interfaith marriage
« on: Sunday 22 September 19 23:34 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

Looking for a bit of insight or advice.

My ancestors married in 1835 at a CofE church. I have found the groom's baptism (CofE) but the only bride's baptism I can find is Catholic.

What is the likelihood of them marrying?

Would she have had to convert?

Did interfaith marriages happen in the Victorian times? And was there stigma?

Thanks very much

The Common Room / Conundrum
« on: Wednesday 29 May 19 19:45 BST (UK)  »
Below:

Marriage of my great great great grandparents
Birth cert. of Elizabeth Jolley
Baptism of Elizabeth Jolley

The baptism states 'Walsh' in brackets at the end of her parents' names. Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions of where I go from there?

Her birth certificate states her mother's maiden name as 'Fairhurst'. Her parents married as Joseph Jolley and Ann Fairhurst in 1843 at St John, Wigan and It gives the parents' names as William & Elizabeth Jolley and James & Elizabeth Fairhurst.

Elizabeth's siblings where all born as Jolley and their mother's maiden name is recorded as 'Fairhurst'.

Have no idea where 'Walsh' comes from but surely it must be of some significance or is it an error by the recorder at the time?

Marriage: 23 Oct 1864 Christ Church, Ince, Lancashire, England

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / 1881 Birth Place
« on: Saturday 04 May 19 22:34 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Houghton and Ellen Gibson married 1874, Wigan and were living at 1 Watmough's Yard, Wigan in 1881.

I cannot find any background information on Thomas before he married, despite his marriage giving his father's name as James Houghton.

On the 1881 census I cannot decipher the birth location, other than Lancashire and possibly 'Lower'. Please could someone hazard a guess as to what it says.

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Very Confusing Tale
« on: Monday 01 December 14 17:32 GMT (UK)  »
I've tried to explain this story a lot without it sounding long winded and very confusing. So below I have copied some research I have based on my 3X Great Grandmother, Caroline between the 1861 and 1911 censuses. Two families seem to cross over and two surnames are used for marriages and births. Desperately need some help or at least another person's viewpoint of this as it is driving me crackers. Caroline and her siblings were registered at birth as Butchers but seem to use the Didlock surname as well.

You might find it easier to start from the bottom and work your way up. Hope someone can shed some light on this!

FH Documents and Artefacts / Cause of Death
« on: Saturday 29 November 14 01:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

A while ago I purchased the death cert. of my 3 X Great Grandmother who died aged 71 in 1911. On the cert. it says that the cause of death was "Gastritis Asthenia". I know Asthenia means weakness but I didn't know that you could die from having Gastritis! Is it likely that there were other complications and they just weren't known of?

Lancashire / Death records for a couple
« on: Monday 27 January 14 16:55 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have a Michael and Mary Gallagher in the 1881 census living at 18 Spring Street in Wigan. It says they were born 1830 and 1831, both in Ireland. They married in 1853 in Wigan and had 6 children all born in Wigan. There are two sons living with Michael and Mary in 1881 and the rest of the children either died in childhood or married and moved out.
I'm trying to find the death records for Michael and Mary but can't find any in Wigan or the whole country which match their birth years (give or take a couple of years).
I've searched the main cemeteries in Wigan and haven't found them either. Anyone have any ideas where I go from here to find out when and where they died?? Thank you
