Australia / Look Up Request: Death Notice - Johan Arthur Karlsson
« on: Thursday 05 August 21 04:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find the death notice of my x2 great grandfather Johan Arthur Karlsson, also may go by John Arthur Carlson.

I am led to believe he died in Australia, only I have no clue where as family ties were cut.

Johan Arthur Karlsson was born in Svartsmara, Åland on the 9th of October 1872.

He was , from what I have gathered, a sailor (and probably a polygamist!) - traveling between Åland and the States often and also to Australia.

He Married Alina Sophia Danielsdotter in 1898 in Åland and they had seven children, one of them being my great grandfather, Johan Mikael Karlsson b.1905 (later naturalized in Australia to John Carlson).

From what I've been told (family myth), my great grandfather met with his father when he came to Melbourne, but there was a family rift and the two never spoke again (I would suspect this has something to do with Johan's treatment and later divorce of my x2 great grandmother. I vaguely remember my Nana saying he may have been working at a pub, but that cannot be confirmed.

I have him listed on electoral rolls as living in Gayndah, Wide Bay QLD in 1925 and then in Kerang, Wimmera, VIC in 1936 - but this is as far as I have got with him, he is otherwise a dead end.

I think there's a possibility he may be listed as an unassisted immigrant somewhere with a possible death year of 1970.

He apparently also lived in the States in 1900 according to a census.

Any help you can offer, but particularly in finding his  date of death and burial place, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Other Countries / Norway: Solving the mystery of a Norwegian sailor
« on: Saturday 13 July 19 14:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi All, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help in solving this little puzzle.
In 1913, a young Norwegian sailor by the name of Per Valdahl fell from his ship's mast in Tumby Bay, South Australia.
He was buried here, and we're trying to trace relatives so that they know (if they don't already) where his final resting place is.
I have attached copies of the newspaper notice which has a few more details and a copy of his death details.
Any help would be amazing!

Cheshire Lookup Requests / LEECH, John born 1785 in Clotton, Cheshire
« on: Monday 20 November 17 04:58 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone could help me as I search for more details on my 4x Great Grandfather John Leech b. 1785 Clotton, Cheshire d. 5 January 1844 Pen y bryn, Castle Caereinion, Montgomeryshire.
As I am not in the UK, it makes physically going to parishes etc impossible.
I believe he married an unknown woman in 1837 and had a son, Richard, born in 1842.

He later married a Sarah Ellis but I'm not sure when and she died in 1847.

I believe John and Sarah are both buried at Pen y bryn Castle Caereinion Churchyard when they died.

I would be curious to find out who his first wife was (Richard's Mother) and any further information into his family (parents, baptisims etc.)

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Cheers,
Stacey

Buckinghamshire Lookup Requests / Elliot, Jane B:1662 (?)
« on: Wednesday 04 July 12 05:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Guys!

Found some new info on my family tree and it's got me pretty excited. Ive tried using Ancestry resources but only come up with info I already have.

I'm looking for information on a Jane Elliot, who at the time of her marriage to Andrew Graham in 1721, in St Stephen, Coleman Street London, was registered to be residing at Eton, Buckinghamshire.

I've searched the Buckinghamshire family history society, but Elliot does not seem a common name in that county. I was trying to access records from St John The evangelist Parish?

It appears she married Andrew later in life, and that she may not be my relative at all, but rather the second wife. I will continue to search out my options but would love some help here please! :)

Cheers,
Stacey

Australia / Murder Mystery
« on: Friday 27 April 12 13:06 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if someone could give me the heads up when it comes to looking for truth in Family Myths, especially those regarding murder, when I have very little information to go by.

My grandmother passed away in September 2011 and a couple of months before she died, she had told me that her uncle had apparently poisoned her grandmother, that he wasn't quite right in the head, but no body in the family talked about it.

My great great grandmother's name was Martha Reed (nee Staveley) married to a Henry Joseph Reed and her son was Cybil (John) Reed. My great grandmother was Annie Florence Reed (I believe she was a twin) whom died in Port Lincoln, South Australia in the early 1990's.

This is all the information I have to go on and as you can see I have very little and it's a bit of a nightmare. I'm not scared of a bit of hard work, but am lost as to where to start (when I have already tried sites like Mundia & Ancestry).

I'm going to head to the State Library in the next week or so, but any help to point me in a more useful direction would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I have on hand for the moment a copy of the "Pink Lake" cemetery burials index from Yorketown, South Australia dated 1874 - 1996. If it can be of use to anyone, please don't hesitate to ask for a look-up.

Europe / Finland/Sweden- The Åland Islands
« on: Friday 14 January 11 11:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've been helped pretty massively by a few special people around this place since I started out only 3 months ago, of which I cannot express how grateful I am, however, I've come to a bit of brick wall with one of my family members, and it feels like I'm never going to get anywhere researching his family back in Finland.

I'm looking for more information on my Great Grandfather and his life before arriving in Australia.

John (Yohan) Mikael Karlsson

Born: 12 May 1906 Holmöarna(?), Åland Islands, Finland
Died: 1974 South Australia
Married: 1928 Eilleen Emily Catherine Clarke
Naturalised: 5/12/1939: Reg No 6820 - Karlsson eventually turned to Carlson

Arrived From France On The Herzogin Cecilie, A Windjamer From Mariehamn, Åland, where He jumped Ship in Port Lincoln, South Australia  (1925/1926?)

Occupation: Boat Builder (from what I've been told)
Notes: He was missing one hand (I was told he lost it at the age of 14 picking up shells from WW1)

His Father's name was Yohan Arthur Karlsson and his mother's name was Alina Sophia (maiden name unknown)

Siblings:
Ethel Karlsson
Hjordis Karlsson
Mary Karlsson
Roy Karlsson

I've been told that Alina Sophia was living in Mariehamn, Åland Islands, upon her death. Also, because the Åland Islands are governed by Finland, but the culture, traditions and language were Swedish, and apparently to his dying day my great grandfather stubbornly insisted he was Swedish, not Finnish.

This is all I know, and I've been trying with my limited (due to my lack of experience) knowledge to find out more about his side of the family. If anyone could suggest any websites, or offer any help regarding this family, I would be extremely grateful.

Cheers!
