World War Two / V for Victory ?
« on: Wednesday 20 December 23 11:41 GMT (UK)  »
Sorting through a small box of WW2 memorabilia kept by my mother,  in amongst ID cards, ration books and Home Guard items, I came across the following badge (?) . It is made from leather and shows no sign of having been attached to, or detached from, anything else. I presume the “V” is for “Victory” but wonder if it is an official badge or some form of patriotic statement.
Any thoughts ?

Westmorland / Westmorland Parish Records on line.
« on: Wednesday 15 March 23 02:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have a feeling I've asked this before, maybe several years ago, without success but things change so it is worth asking again.
Are any of the actual Westmorland PRs available to view on line ? The other counties I have been researching in have all had their PRs and/or BTs online either with Ancestry or Family Search, but not Westmorland.  A few oddments do appear on FindMyPast but not a large selection.
Family Search do have these records, which have been made searchable in a transcript form but attempts to view the originals result in a message : "Access the site at a FamilySearch center.
Access the site at a FamilySearch affiliate library."

If the originals are not available is there some particular reason why not (diocesan objection, perhaps ? ) or is it just a matter of waiting for somebody to process them ?

Norfolk / Coote – Northwold, Norfolk – 1780 to 1810
« on: Thursday 09 March 23 03:56 GMT (UK)  »
From the Parish records I have five children born between 1798 and 1810 and given as the children of Joseph and Ann Coote. The vicar was one of those lovely men who included the mother's maiden name, in this case “late Hewen”. My problem is that I have been unable to find a marriage for this couple.  I have checked Ancestry, Family Search, and FindMyPast.
There is a Marriage Bond between Joseph Coote, a farmer and singleman, aged 50 of Northwold, and an Ann Hearsign, widow aged 42,  at Burgate in Suffolk on 20th or 27th July 1782. (records disagree !) Whilst, at first glance and allowing for the usual problems with pronunciation, this looks promising, Ann's age would suggest she is not the Ann Hewen who produced children from 1798 onwards.
I have not been able to find a likely marriage for Ann Hewen.

Given that “Joseph Coote” (or Coot) is a relatively common name throughout East Anglia can anybody  either identify this couple or point me at other possible sources.

Norfolk / Watton Parish Records 1858-1859
« on: Monday 20 April 20 04:40 BST (UK)  »
On page 69 of the marriage register entry 137 is dated 13 Dec 1858 and is followed by entry 138 dated 14 Oct 1859. As this was a moderately busy church there would usually be several marriages in this time. Does anybody know a reason for this gap ? and, if the church were closed for repairs or restoration, where would the parishioners have been wed ?

World War One / WW1 - Service Medals for casualties.
« on: Thursday 12 September 19 06:40 BST (UK)  »
An uncle was killed in action towards the end of the war. His gallantry medal, awarded when he was missing but before his death was known, was forwarded to his parents as n-o-k but would his service medals (Victory and War Medal) have been sent as well or were they withheld as his death would have been known by the time they were actually issued ?
If they were withheld would it be possible to have them issued as I would like to make up the full entitlement as a set ?

Wales / Father knew Lloyd-George ??
« on: Sunday 28 October 18 03:33 GMT (UK)  »
I'm posting this to the Wales forum because, although it probably relates to Glamorgan, I cannot be certain of this.
I found the attached photo/postcard in with family memorabilia, but cannot identify with any certainty any of the people, except LL-G.  It is possible that the gentleman behind LL-G is my great-grand father, Howel Watkins, who had been a local body politician and Mayor of Swansea in 1897. Certainly some members of the family had Liberal connections but mainly in a later period than this photo.

By the dress I am guessing that this is earlier than the 1910 election so may relate to the 1900 or 1906 campaigns. The youngster standing with Ll-G might be one of his daughters, Megan, Olwyn, or Mair, depending on the date of the photo, but, in that case where are the rest of the family ?
Has anybody any thoughts on the identity of any of the group ?

Armed Forces / 1939 Register - Annotations and What They Mean?
« on: Sunday 18 February 18 08:09 GMT (UK)  »
On the far right of the census pages the enumerators have noted if an individual had potential war-time responsibilities such ARP or WVS. Most of these are easy to translate but one on a (potential) family member has got me puzzled. These are the letters "N.A.C.".  The man is an "aviator/pilot" but not given as RAF or either of its reserves. Could it be a branch of the Navy's Fleet Air Arm or some sort of goverment civilian unit ?
All idea welcome !

The Common Room / A Hired Marriage ?
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
In the registers of a Shropshire parish I came across the following entry :

1773 June 13th. John the son of Mary Humphries (but by a hired marriage solemnised the 11th March last at St. Martin's Church in Birmingham between her & Benjamin Hardwick of Bitterly) now Mary Hardwick, was baptised.

I presume that this was a marriage by proxy because Benjamin was willing to "do the decent" but, for some reason, was unable to return from Birmingham in reasonable time. It seems a sensible arrangement but I was not aware that it was possible. Was it common, and when did the practice cease ?

Canada / Henry (Harry) Baron born Lancashire 1878, died Vancouver 1961
« on: Thursday 09 November 17 02:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Harry Baron was a first cousin to my grandmother, his father being the brother of her mother.

I'm looking for descendants of Harry, who married Marianne (May) Keeble in Suffolk, England in 1903 and emigrated to Canada in 1908. I believe they had three children all born in Canada (possibly Alberta), one of whom, Joyce, married William Davies in 1935.
I was in touch with Joyce and William's daughter in Vancouver some years ago but contact has been lost.
As this involves living people could anybody having current contact with any of the family please PM me rather than post contact details on this forum.
