Westmeath / Brown family from Athlone
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 03:08 BST (UK)  »
Good morning all
I am trying to find the Irish connection with my elderly cousin granddad Mike Brown.
While it is said that Mike Brown was born in Kansas USA in about 1870 no records have yet been found.
When Mike Brown married in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1913 he gave his birth place as Kansas and his parents names as Mike Brown and Lizzie Wainsborough.  No successful research had been found on USA census etc of that couple yet. Some interesting results were found for a couple with similar spelling from Athlone, Westmeath.
This is link to the Canada Roots Chat post:

Our family believe that Mike Brown's parents were Irish Catholic
Family story says that Mike Brown's had an uncle JP (John Patrick) Brown who came from Athlone  in Westmeath and was a pioneer of Atchison City, Atchison Country, Kansas.  I have found quite a bit of information on JP Brown in Atchison, Kansas including census and historical records but nothing that links him to our Mike Brown
Why am I posting on the Westmeath Roots Chat?  Well I am open to any suggestions regarding my cousins Granddad Mike Brown and his parents Michael Brown and Elizabeth Wainsborough (however it is spelt) and looking for absolutely anything that could connect Mike Brown and his parents to JP Brown late of Atchison Kansas.
Cheerio for now and look forward to any replies.  My elderly cousins are ever so grateful and thankful for any assistance
I am also posting on the USA RootsChat.

United States of America / Mike Brown from Kansas born about 1870 (+/-5 years)
« on: Saturday 09 August 14 02:45 BST (UK)  »
Good morning all
I am looking for Mike Brown said to be born in Kansas
I have attached his marriage certificate to Minnie Wilson.  They were married in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on 26 Feb 1913.
Mike Brown gave his place of birth as Kansas
He said he was a farmer and gave his residence as Colby, Washington
I have done some extensive research on his wife Minnie Wilson from York in England.
I have a previous post on the Canada Roots Chat and the title of that post is:
"Minnie Wilson and MIke Brown married 26 Feb 1913, Vancouver, Brtish Columbia" and I had some interesting and helpful replies.

On marriage certificate Mike Brown says his parents names are Mike Brown and Lizzie Wainsborough.
Family stories say Mike Brown's family are from Ireland.
Another family story is that Mike Brown's uncle was JP Brown who was a pioneer of Atchison City, Atchison Country, Kansas.  I have found quite a bit of info on JP (John Patrick or Paddy) Brown including marriage to Sarah Wagner in Pennsylvania.
Another family story is that by marriage Mike Brown had a rellie who was a Mayor (or maybe politician, worked in government or something like that) who's surname was Wagner.  No idea what dates or where on this - it's a family story
I am doing this research for elderly cousins.  Mike and Minnie are their grandparents and they would love to know anything extra that can be found about the elusive Mike Brown.
Mike and Minnie were married in BC in 1913 and next thing we know they are in Tasmania and their first daughter was born at Queenstown, Tasmania in 14 Feb 1914,  Mike and Minnie had a second daughter born in Tasmania in 1916.  Then moved to Sydney, New South Wales and eventually went to Queensland where Mike died in 1940 and Minnie died in 1966.
Most of the family stories my cousins tell me about their granddad Mike Brown were passed onto them by granny or their mother.
Briefly Mike Brown family stories are that he worked for his Uncle JP Brown driving the wealthy women of Atchison to their social events, he left about 13 years old, next is he was suppose to be working on a chicken ranch in Montana, went to the Klondike to find his fortune.  Then we have the fact that he got married in Canada in 1913 saying he was living at Colby Washington which is on Yukon Harbour.
With help from the Canada RootsChatters a Michael Brown and Elizabeth Wandsbro (and similar spellings) were found having children around the era that Mike Brown was said to be born....these births were in Westmeath, Ireland - Glassan mainly which is near Athlone. (parents names Mike Brown gave on marriage cert were Mike Brown and Lizzie Wainsborough)
I have read somewhere that JP Brown came from Athlone, Westmeath.
With Mike Brown moving around the way he is said to it is not easy to find him on census records and so far I have not found a positive link to Mike Brown and his said uncle JP Brown.  I have tired research on JP Brown and have found him in Kansas census and other records from 1859, 1865, census 1880 and 1900 and his death, burial and headstone 1909.  So JP really does exist!
Can a anyone help with any further suggestion or information?
I think I have covered all the info i have either been give or researched myself or assisted with.
I am ever so grateful for any further input or suggestion.
Cheerio for now  Gerri

G'day
I am trying to find out any further info on Minnie Wilson and Mike Brown who were married at St Andrews, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on 26 Feb 1913.
Minnie Wilson born 21 Sep 1886 in Hull, Yorkshire, England.
Mike Brown (Michael William Brown) born Kansas about 1870  ???
Marriage certificate says: Minnie Wilson age 27 born England, residence when married as Kamloops, British Columbia, parents names Charles Frost Wilson and Isabella Hutton
and
Mike Brown age 38, residence when married as Colby, Washington, USA birthplace Kansas, USA and parents Mike Brown and Lizzie Wainsborough
Family stories say Mike did not tell the truth about his age at the time he married Minnie and he was about 15 years older than Minnie hence the calculation of Mike being born some time around 1870. :o
After their marriage Mike and Minnie came to Tasmania in Australia where their first daughters was born in 1914 and then second daughter born also in Tasmania in 1916. They then went to Queensland, Australia where their 3rd daughter was born in 1924.  Both Mike and Minnie died in Queensland
Minnie was born in Yorkshire, England,  Her mother Isabella nee Hutton died when Minnie was about 8 years old.
In 1908 Minnie married a Karl or Frederick William Charles Weise who was said to have worked on ships.  Karl seems to have vanished and family stories say he died at sea.  Minnie and Karl had a daughter Annie (born Hull 1910 died Hull 1931).  Family stories say Minnie gave Annie to her sister and went to Canada. It seems Minnie did not take on the Weise surname!
What I am looking for is:
1) How did Minnie Wilson (or possible Weise or Weiss) get to Canada?
2) Are there any record of Mike Brown arriving in Canada (he may have also been to the Klondike looking for Gold before he went to Colby, Washington)
3) How did Mike and Minnie get from Canada to Tasmania?
Any further info about Mike Brown would also be appreciated.  Mike's earlier years are totally mysterious to our family.
Thanks in advance for any information
Cheerio

Donegal / Mary McClafferty born abt 1840 Donegal
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 05:46 GMT (UK)  »
G'day from down under
I'm looking for any information about Mary McCalfferty who was said to be born somewhere in Donegal about 1840.
Her death certificate suggest she may have been from Letterkenny and other documents suggest she was from Doe.  I have no further evidence of her place of birth.
Mary had 2 sisters named Ann and Jane McClafferty.
I think Mary's father was John McClafferty and her mother could have been Mary/Marjory Ferry (or maybe Terry)
It seems Mary's 2 younger sisters mother was Jane, suggesting Mary's father John may have married twice.
Mary, who was also know as Marjory, sponsored both her sister to Sydney, New South Wales and it appears Mary came out on the Donegal Relief Fund.
Mary is another of my family history research long term  brick walls! ::)
Can anyone make any further suggestions or assistance.  :)
Cheerio and thanks in advance  G

Dublin / Mathew Dalton born abt 1808 Dublin
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 05:35 GMT (UK)  »
I am searching for my ancestor Mathew Dalton born about 1808 in Dublin.
Mathew was working as a waiter when he was convicted of stealing sugar.
Mathew's trial was 5 Oct 1827 in Dublin. He was convicted and sentenced to 7 years transportation.
Mathew arrived in the Colony of New South Wales on 2 June 1828
He married convict woman Jane Greer (born Scotland and convicted Armagh Co.) in 1840 and had a large family in New South Wales.
I have copies of Mathew's available convict records.
I have not located details of his trial place/court at which the trial was held.
I do not know the names of Mathew's parent.
His religion was given as Roman Catholic and he could sign his name.
Can anyone give me any clues as to where I could find further information about my Mathew?
I've been on the search trail for years and have not been able to knock down this brick wall  :'(
Cheers and thanks in advance
