Lincolnshire / John Arliss, butcher, Louth (died 1847)
« on: Friday 12 February 16 09:44 GMT (UK)  »
I have long sought John Arliss' parents.

John Arliss, butcher, was born about 1789 or 90 based on his death age 57 in 1847.

He married Sarah Hockney in 1818 and ran a butchery on Walkergate, Louth (one of 2 on that street) which was taken over by surviving family.

I am dubious of others' interpretation of his parents as John Arliss and Mary Dobson (their son John was b 1787 in Yarburgh). Here's why:

1828 and 29 Pigotts Directories have a George Arliss, butcher on the same street (Walkergate) but George has gone by the 1841 census. John may have taken this business over from George . It may even have been a long term family enterprise because George Arliss was apprenticed to a John Arliss, butcher, even earlier (1773).

So, I'm wondering if John Arliss could be a son of George Arliss and Bellamy Atkin who married in Louth in 1784...even though I can't find a record of his birth.

Lincolnshire / Wilkinson Dent
« on: Friday 12 February 16 02:30 GMT (UK)  »
FreeReg has a Wilkinson Dent baptised 27 Feb 1827 in Keelby, Lincs, son of Harriet Dent and shown as illegitimate. One might guess that the father was a Wilkinson, but he is not named in the record, simply listed as a servant.

In 1832, a Harriet Dent married my ggGrandfather Henry Sargent, a Master carpenter of Marshchapel, and she appears in various Broughton censuses as born Keelby.

I cannot identify any child of their's with an 1827 birthdate in censuses from 1851 onwards though they have a Thomas Sargent, age 14, with them in 1841 Broughton...predates their marriage and suggests an 1827 birthdate. But, given Henry's trade, this could have been a nephew.

Can anyone shed any light on Wilkinson Dent please?

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Simpson- Holt
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 01:50 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking for the parents of Joseph Simpson and Susannah Holt whose 7 August 1809, Norton Cuckney marriage was given to me by someone on here a year ago.

1841 Worksop census has both NOT born in county, but 1851 has Jos 62 and Sus 64 , both born in Worksop...ie born in the 1787-1789 period. Their children were born in Worksop from 1810.

Neither IGI nor FreeREG has Worksop or Cuckney baps pre 1814. After 1814 Cuckney has both the Holt and Simpson names..a James Simpson had 10 kids there 1818- 1835 and an Ann Holt was bap there in 1825.

IGI Cuckney also has a John Simpson - Mary Turner marr 19/1/1771..  possible parents for my Joseph.

The only online clue I can find for Susannah Holt is the 16/11/1787 IGI Mattersey bap, dau of William and Mary. Mattersey seems to be one of those close to county border places which might explain the 1841 "not born in county". There is another bap in Newark 1790...a bit far away??

Any ideas?

Nottinghamshire / Ann Host born c 1786-89 Harby,Notts
« on: Thursday 26 April 07 15:17 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the birth or parents of Ann Host.

According to the 1851-61 censuses in Glentworth Lincs, Ann Middleton (nee Host) was born Harby Notts between about 1786 and 1789.

She married John Middleton in Springthorpe Lincs in 1817, and their children were named Lydia, James ,Christopher,Francis and Sarah. Other than James, those are not names common to my Middleton tree.

It is possible that she is the  Ann Hoste bap 17/4/1795 in Lincoln, dau of Jonathon and Sarah....a late baptism??...because Lincoln is only 5 or 6 miles from Harby. A John Host was also bap in Lincoln to John and Sarah in 1782. If that's the same couple, it suggests a pre 1782 marriage.

I cannot find a marriage for this John/Jonathon and Sarah in Lincs and I do have all of the LFHS deanery marriage records 1700-1837 for about 20 miles around Lincoln.

The Harby village website says that village records were in North Clifton parish at this time, but IGI has no NC baps pre 1813, and no marriage that looks at all like Host.

That's all I know...or don't know. Any Notts clues will be most welcome.

Nottinghamshire / Esther Simpson c1806-8 Worksop
« on: Wednesday 25 April 07 10:54 BST (UK)  »
G'day Nottinghamshire.

I am looking for the parents of Esther Simpson.

According to  Barnetby Lincs censuses, ages put her birth c 1806-1808 ,Worksop Notts...one of those inconvenient IGI blanks in batch C008622.

Esther married John Lingard, a wheelwright, 28/12/1830 in Althorpe ,N Lincs (too early for a certificate) and my 2nd gt grandmother Susannah Lingard was born 1832 at Burringham, nearby.

IGI Worksop marriages in the right timeframe included:

Joseph Simpson- Sarah Turner 28/5/1801
William Simpson - Elizabeth Ellis 12/7/1802
John Simpson - Peggy Woodcock 8/6/1807

Esther's children were Susannah, William, Joseph, Ellen and Mary Ann. No real name clues there because her in-laws were Joseph and Eleanor.

If anyone has any links or sources (first time I 've looked at Notts), I'd appreciate your help.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / 1851 Census, Middleton (various places)
« on: Wednesday 03 August 05 02:58 BST (UK)  »
Looking for two of my Middleton ancestors....

1. Ann Middleton: Should be in Glentworth in 1851 (was there in '41 and '61) age about 66, probably widowed. Son Christopher (deaf) was with her in Glentworth '41 and '61. Any other relatives in the household?

2. Francis Middleton her son was born about 1829 in Glentworth (i.e. about 22 in '51) and is usually harder to track, because although baptised and buried as Francis, he uses the name GEORGE or Frank in censuses. He married Mary (born Thealby 1824 - 1826) and had children in Burton and Winterton from about 1852. Don't know if he was married by 1851. My frustration with Francis/ Frank/ George is that he was a Shepherd...and censuses take place around lambing season....was away from his Winterton family in '61 (found in Fockerby across the Trent) and no trace yet in '41 (age only about 12....but not at home with parents Ann and John).

Very interested to know his whereabouts in 1851 and whether he was married by then.

Again, any help is appreciated.

« on: Sunday 31 July 05 13:17 BST (UK)  »
Looking for John Faulding, farmer, with wife Elizabeth and children John ,Elizabeth and Matthew in Barton on Humber in 1851. The children were with Elizabeth , Widow, in Barton in 1861, all born Barton. What I'd love to find is John senior's birthplace and approx date - it might be 1781-2, Preston by Hedon in Yorks. Also, any other family in the household in '51?

Thanks in anticipation.
