Census and Resource Discussion / findmypast vs ancestry.co.uk
« on: Wednesday 24 October 12 23:06 BST (UK)  »
I am at a point where I really need to get into parish records to pursue a few of the branches of my family tree. FindMyRoots says that they have the most complete collection of parish records, and Ancestry says that they have them as well.

I'd like to know people's experience with both places. I can only afford one, and I was leaning towards Ancestry as I can pay by the month. With FindMyRoots, I'd have to pay for at least 6 months up front which is quite expensive for me. I'm on a limited budget as I'm retired. I would like to get the most for my money in terms of being able to find information efficiently.

Please let me know of your experiences with both places so I can make a good decision :)

By the way, I live in the U.S. so I can't go to these places to look up the information in person. I'm interested mostly in Salford, Manchester, Liverpool, and I know my search will take me to Scotland at some point.

Thank you!

Lancashire / Medical Records
« on: Sunday 09 September 12 01:06 BST (UK)  »
I have been on a quest to get a copy of my grandmother's medical records. She died 25 October, 1926 at Hope Hospital, 2 Stott Lane, Salford. The cause of death is listed as "acute mania".

I have written to the Salford Royal Hospital which is the name of Hope Hospital, and then had nothing. They told me to check with the GMRO, which I did, and nothing. The GMRO told me to try Prestwich Hospital, which I did and there are no records there.

My Mom was told at the age of 6 that her mother had died. The truth is that my Mom was 7-1/2 when her mother died, which means that her mother was probably in the hospital for the mentally ill for a year and half before she actually died.

I find it hard to believe that there is no record of her at Salford Royal, the GMRO, or Prestwich.

Any ideas where else I can look, or someone I could contact about this?

Thank you,
Carole

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Organizing certificates
« on: Tuesday 04 September 12 18:05 BST (UK)  »
Now that I've gotten so many birth, marriage, death certificates, I'm having a hard time organizing them. Can anyone give me some suggestions on the best way to do this? I'd also be interested in what you keep your's in? Do you have a folder, multiple folders? Is there any place in the UK that makes some kind of organizer for these things?  I've looked here in the US, but the size of them prohibits me from using anything I've seen over here.

Thanks,
Carole

I'm trying to find out when my Mom left England and when she entered Canada. She lived in Salford, England and married my father, a Canadian soldier, during World War II. I remember her saying that she came over on the Queen Mary, but I don't know what year.

Her married name was May Martin (maiden name Livesley).
Her husband's name was Clarence Martin

I don't even know if they came over on the same ship together or separately.

Can anyone tell me if the passenger lists are available online anywhere?

Thanks!

Lancashire / St. Peters Church, Liverpool
« on: Tuesday 03 April 12 00:55 BST (UK)  »
I have traced my family back to this parish. Unfortunately, it was torn down and no longer exists. There is a St. Peter's in Liverpool now, and I contacted them, but they said they have nothing to do with the original one. I am trying to find out where the records from the original one would be. I am planning to come over to England next year (2013), and I'd like to get permission to look through them to see if I can go back further in my family tree. I am already back to the early 1800's, so parish records would be the only records available for me to get back into the late 1700's. If anyone is in Liverpool, could you find out if they have these records on microfilm at one of the libraries? Or if someone knows where the records were sent for archiving, please let me know so that perhaps I could write to get permission to view them next year.

Thanks,
Carole

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Look up - May MARTIN / LIVESLEY
« on: Monday 06 February 12 00:58 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find out when my mother left England to immigrate to Canada after marrying my father during WW2. I believe she was on the Queen Mary, but I'm not sure. If anyone could look this up for me, I'd appreciate it.

Her married name was May Martin - maiden name was May Livesley - she was born in 1919 in Salford, England.

Thank you!

The Common Room / Off topic: Is there a website like this for Canada?
« on: Wednesday 11 January 12 00:53 GMT (UK)  »
I just found out that I can claim British citizenship by descent as my mother was born in England. However, when I looked at her papers when she became a US citizen in the 1960's, it lists her nationality as "Canada".  During WW2, she married my father who was a Canadian and when the war was over they moved to Canada for a short while before moving to the US. I want to find out if, in fact, my mother did become a Canadian citizen as she never mentioned it, and considered herself English until the day she died. I'm not sure if there was some kind of law that gave spouses of Canadian servicemen who married overseas automatic citizenship or if what it on her US citizenship papers was wrong. This is very important to me as I would love to retire in the UK and want to obtain British citizenship by descent.

Thanks for any help anyone can give on this!

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Manchester Central Library
« on: Monday 21 November 11 01:56 GMT (UK)  »
If anyone is going there, I'd really appreciate this look up.

There was a marriage of Thomas Coupe to Jane McKenzie (listed as McKinzie) in September, 1842 at St. Mary's Eccles Parish or Eccles Parish St Mary's.  If you can find more information, please let me know.

Thanks!

Lancashire / Old maps of Salford?
« on: Sunday 20 November 11 21:41 GMT (UK)  »
I just received the birth certificate of my great great grandmother. She was born on the 9 July, 1843. The address looks like 6 Bete Street in the subdistrict of Greengate, Salford. I've tried googling it, but nothing comes up. I'm sure that's because it's no longer there, as the street where my Mom was born and grew up is no longer there either.

Does anyone have a very old map of Salford who could tell me if (a) I'm reading the spelling correctly, as the certificate is handwritten and (b) where Bete Street was when it was in existence?

Thank you!
