The Common Room / Help finding a singer on the radio
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 12:53 GMT (UK)  »
I'm searching for information on a Joseph AYRE who, according to family legend, was a singer on the radio.
He would have been born around 1880 and I know he lived in Horley, Surrey at some point in his life but I have no idea which radio station he may have worked for.
He and Eva Hinde MANCHESTER (nee SHARMAN) ran off together, had 2 children (b 1920 & 1922, registered in Reigate) and later married in Tynemouth, Northumberland (in 1933) once Eva's 1st husband died.
AYRE seems a common name in Northumberland so it's possible this is where he was from originally.

Does anyone have any ideas for where I could find any records relating to radio broadcasts that may help?

Thanks in anticipation.

Occupation Interests / Tailors - How did they live and work?
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 10:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have Levitt ancestors who were a familiy of tailors from around 1800 to 1900. They moved aound the country a lot and often seem to share housing with other tailoring people.

I'm intrigued by the extent of their movements and would like to understand more about their lifestyle.
Does anyone know of any info on the industry during the 19th century?

Thanks

Occupation Interests / Occupation query on 1838 marriage certificate
« on: Sunday 07 January 07 01:22 GMT (UK)  »
I've just received an 1838 marriage cert showing my ancestor's father's occupation as something like 'Brafs Founder'. I just can't figure out what on earth this might be  :-\

My ancestor was a tailor according to the later censuses (haven't found him in 1841 yet), and some of his children became tailors.
On the marriage cert his wife's father is a tailor.
Also, the cert lists both bride and groom as living in High Street, Leeds. He was born in Middlesex and  she was born in Durham. But they appear in Yorkshire on and off during their lives, the rest of the time they are in Middlesex.

I don't know whether any of the above info helps shed any light. But any ideas would be graefully received.

Thanks

But I cannot find them on Ancestry in the 1841 census.

Derbyshire Lookup Requests / Richard SHARMAN - born approx 1740, Dronfield
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 10:20 GMT (UK)  »
I have been tracing my Sharman ancestors and have got back to the mid 1700s in Sutton-cum-Duckmanton, Derbyshire. I know there is another strand of Sharmans in the vicinity which I suspect are related but have not yet found the link. I suspect a generation further back may provide the key.

From IGI - I have a Richard Sharman b 1741 and Isabell Booer b 1745 both born in Sutton-cum-Duckmanton. But these are submitted to the site by an individual so I am a bit dubious about the accuracy of the info.

From a lookup on the Sutton-cum-Duckmanton parish register - I have confirmation they married in 1766 but no baptism for either of them.

I have rechecked IGI and have a christening for a Richard Sharman on 1st November 1740 in Dronfield, father John Sharman with a film reference number.
But I am unclear how much confidence to place on this information. I guess the fact that someone has transcribed it from a film provides more confidence that the data actually exists but I have no idea how accurate these transcriptions are.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Thanks

Shropshire / Matthew BUTLER b. approx 1804 Ellesmere
« on: Thursday 16 March 06 22:57 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please ?

I am trying to track down Matthew BUTLER b approx 1804 - according to the 1841 and 51 censuses he was born in Iscoyd, Denbighshire and lived in Overton, Flintshire. But lookups in both locations have failed to find him.

But then on the 1861 census he claims to have been born in Ellesmere.
Also, there is a likely death for him in 1866 but that suggests he was born in 1800.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated,

Thanks

Denbighshire / Help - Matthew BUTLER b 1804 Iscoyd
« on: Friday 03 March 06 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help please ?

I am trying to track down Matthew BUTLER b approx 1804 in Iscoyd, Denbighshire.
According to the 1841 and 1851 census, he was married to Elizabeth and they lived in Overton with children George, James, Elizabeth, Mary, Thomas, Rebecca all born between 1834 and 1847.
But there is also a grandaughter with them in 1851 called Frances b. 1844 and daughter of Ann Butler.
Frances is too old to be the child of any of Matthew's children listed above so I wonder was he married twice? Could Ann be his daughter from a previous marriage?
Can anyone advise how I can find out ?
Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Flintshire / Help - Mary BUTLER, Overton
« on: Wednesday 01 March 06 21:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone help?
I am trying to find my g.grandmother b. Mary Ann Butler. According to her her marriage certificate she was born 1844 and her father was Matthew Butler. The census returns 1871 to 1901 say she was born in Overton, Flintshire.

But FreeBMD only shows 2 likely Mary Ann Butlers - one born 1842 and one born 1845.
I ordered the certificate for one and it showed no father. I ordered the other one but didn't actually buy it as the father was not Matthew.

I suspect I have found her and her family in 1851 in Overton - father Matthew born 1804 Iscoyd, Denbighshire and various children including a Mary b 1842 also a grandaughter Frances whose age appears to match a Frances Butler who appears elsewhere later - it is this Frances that makes me think I  have found the right family. It doesn't seem to be a common name at that time.

I bought the Overton parish register booklets from Clwyd FHS thinking I might find some Butlers there - but none to be found.
So I suspect maybe the family were non-conformist of some kind - can anyone suggest how I can confirm this and where I might find any baptism records.

Thanks
Bev

Occupation Interests / Railway Workers
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 23:20 GMT (UK)  »
A number of my ancestors worked on the Lancashire railways.
According to a family story, one of them was killed by a train when he was crossing the tracks.
Does anyone know of any websites with railway workers named and/or accidents ?

Thanks
Bev
