Caernarvonshire / Mary Catherine Jones from Portmadog/Carnarvonshire
« on: Saturday 28 May 11 20:18 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to research my Gr,Gr Grandma called Mary Catherine Jones, but I have hit a well built brick wall. ??? I have the following information....

Marriage certificate.
She was married 1st July 1886 to Henry Hull at St. Mary Extra near (now in) Southampton. She was of full age, a spinster, occupation maidservant and her residence at time of marriage was St.Mary Extra. She gave her father's name as James Jones, occupation Tailor.

Censuses.
1891. Mary C Hull, age 26, from Portmadog, Carnarvonshire.
1901. Mary C Hull, age 36, from Portmadoc, Carnarvonshire.

I have a copy of a birth certificate, but I'm wondering if I have ordered the right one.
The details are as follows....
Born 16th Feb 1864 at Glasfryn House, Pwllheli. Name Mary Catherine, Girl, Father, Owen Jones, occupation Draper, informant Mary Jones, Mother, Glasfryn House, Pwllheli. Date registered 25th March 1864.

The trouble is that I have noticed that there are several Mary Catherine Jones's in the area at the same time. I would also love to know why she moved from Carnarvonshire to Southampton area. I feel that I can only proceed with this when I know information such as her date of birth, names of parents and siblings and exact address in Wales, etc.

If anyone has any information or tips on how I can further this research then I would be extremely grateful.

Gary.

Occupation Interests / My ancestor was a tin man.
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 23:35 BST (UK)  »
I'm probably being naive but I am wondering exactly what a Tin-Man did for a living.
My only recollection of a Tin Man was from watching the Wizard of Oz as a child.

2 of my ancestors- William Tiley 1799-1858 from Eling & Stockbridge, Hampshire and Stephen Tiley 1829-1901 also of Eling and Stockbridge plus South Stoneham, Hampshire gave their occupation as Tin Man or chimney sweep when they had their children baptised.

As the overwhelming majority of my ancestors were labourers, it makes a pleasant change to have a couple of Tin Men and chimney sweeps.

Thanks in advance for your help, Gary.

Armed Forces / Was my Gr.Grandad in Merchant navy in WW2 ?
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to research my Great Grandad called Henry George Hull. Family legend has it that he died in 1942/43 in Australia while serving in the Merchant Navy. I haven't been able to prove this so far.
The latest record that I have of him is in 1940 when he entered New York aboard the S.S. Britannic on which he was a "greaser".
The problem that I have is that I do not know the name of the Merchant Navy ship on which he served. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Hampshire & IOW Completed Lookup Requests / Parish register of Eling, Hampshire.
« on: Sunday 06 March 11 13:40 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching my ancestors with my own surname of Oliver in the parish of Eling, which is just to the west of Southampton, Hampshire. I've hit a sizeable brick wall because I cannot decipher the writing on the microfiches, it's too faint in many places. While I'm no expert, I can usually work out old handwriting as long as it's reasonably bold.
What I'm wondering is if someone in the past has transcribed the parish registers for baptisms and burials in Eling? I have a CD rom of "Hampshire marriages" which contains Eling Marriages up until 1812. I know that the parish registers for Southampton and some of those East of Southampton have been transcribed, I use these regularly in Southampton Library.

Any help with this would be very gratefully received. Thanks.

I was wondering if anyone knows if Bishop's transcripts exist for the parish of Michelmersh, near Romsey, Hampshire. I'm aware that a parish register is missing, seemingly the one that I would need to further my research, typically! Perhaps they may have been transcribed and put on CD rom or printed? Any advice on this would be very gratefully received. Thanks.
