Armed Forces / Grandfather in the BOER war.
« on: Tuesday 28 February 12 00:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have been unable to find a trace of my great grandfather in the 1901 census.  He was born in 1875 and would have been age 25 when the census was done.  I found 4 other Robert Fyfe's in Scotland's People and requested a copy of each but none of them proved to be him.  He did not marry until 1902 and had previoulsy been on the census records with his parents Edward and Agnes.  I happened to mention this to a workmate and she suggested that he may have been in the BOAR war.  Can anyone advise me how I could check if he was in this war and how I would get information from a possible military record.  Would this also tell me if received a medal?  Any help would be greatly appreciated as there is nothing on Scotland's People which is the site I generally use.   ;D

Lanarkshire / Identifying a specific census district in Glasgow in 1861
« on: Monday 21 November 11 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please advise which Census District would have covered Miller Street in Glasgow in the 1861 Census.  This is just off Argyle Street.  I'm not from the area and I have a possible 23 people to view on Scotland's People.   I don't mind paying to view the records but I'm going to have my own set of Census records at this rate.  HELP.   Many Thanks in anticipation.    ;D

Lanarkshire / Help with old street maps in Tollcross (Glasgow)
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 14:14 BST (UK)  »
I am currently trying to find old street maps of Tollcross in Glasgow/Lanarkshire.  My husband's grandfather was recorded as living at 23 Dandy Row, Tollcross, Old Monkland when he married on 17th July 1896.
I am struggling due to the boundries between Glasgow and the area which was previously classed as Old Monklands / Lanarkshire.  This was the link  I used from a previous Rootschat posting but I have not had much luck.       http://maps.nls.uk/os/2nd_ed_list.html
I know he was a miner and am assuming that he lived in mining houses.  Can anyone help me?

Technical Help / Windows 7 / Family Tree Maker 2006 - compatibility problems
« on: Monday 21 February 11 00:23 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please, please help me.  Got a new laptop for Christmas with Windows 7.  Loaded my Family Tree Maker 2006 (version) and spent past 7 weeks building my family tree.  Backed this up on disc as a precautionary messure and seem to have lost everything and cannot seem to get the disc to open.  When I try to open the disc, I keep getting the message "The file you are trying to open is either write protected or not a valid Family Tree Maker file.  Change the file attributes or use a different file.  When I hit the retry button nothing happens.  (This is another language to me).  When I initially try to access the Family Tree Maker it states "Family Tree Maker 2006 has one or more drivers with known incompatibilities with this version of windows.  Please contact MyFamily.com to obtain a compatible version of the drivers prior to installing this softwear..   I tried to access this site but it seems to be similar to setting up a facebook account so I'm confused about where I'd get to the download drivers from.   When I try to open the disc on my home PC I get the message "Critical components are missing, please uninstall and reinstall Family Tree Maker.  Your date files have not been affected".  Does this mean that everything I stored on my family tree is OK.  I also have Norton 360 and I don't know if this has been causing my laptop to run slow and to make the Family Tree Maker go loopy.  I was having a lot of fun building my family tree and I'm now beginning to wish I'd just bought a notepad and pen.  If I ask my hubby to take another look at my computer, I'm sure we'll end up in the divorce court.  Any advice you can give a technophobe like me would be greatly appreciated.   :(  :(  :(   Carrie  :(  :(  :(
