Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Lewis Lewis baptism in Llanychaearn
« on: Monday 29 January 24 05:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello!

Hoping someone can help me decipher the word at the end of the line from a baptism record, from 1811 in the Llanychaearn register, as attached. I hope it's an ok section of the record.

I can read "Lewis, son of David and Mary Lewis, <B??>" What is that word and is it a place?

Thank you

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / How many matches do I have?
« on: Friday 19 January 24 06:58 GMT (UK)  »
This might be a really silly question, but is there an easy way to see how many DNA matches I have at any given time, on Ancestry?

Thank you  :)

Cardiganshire / Avarina Hopkins and Lewis Lewis
« on: Friday 10 November 23 12:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Rootschatters!

With such common names I am struggling to track down correct information about these, my 3xG grandparents, and would love any tips or advice.

Here's what I know:

Avarina Hopkins b. C1813 Llanfihangel, and Lewis Lewis b. c1811 Llanyshiam married 10 Mar 1843 West London.

They had 4 daughters in London:
Mary Ann 1844 - ?
Avarina 1848 - 1851
Jane 1850 - 1889 (my ancestor)
Margaret 1853 - 1905

Avarina and Lewis's birth years and birth places from census records.
From Avarina & Lewis's marriage record I know both their fathers were called David and both Farmers.

I was given a lot of information about who their families were via email years ago, however none of it was verified or had source material, so I'm trying to do my own research, starting with what I can trace myself.

Where do I even start?

Help appreciated!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / No matches to Paternal 2xG grandmother's line?
« on: Wednesday 23 August 23 09:43 BST (UK)  »
I'm still getting my head around all this DNA matching... I've tried to extend my tree as wide and deep as I can on Ancestry, and have matches that link to most of my lines, even if it's only one person.
However I have 0 matches on one of my paternal 2xG Grandmother lines. She is the main Welsh connection as far as I know, and although I've read not to give too much credence to the ethnicity estimate/amount, mine does include 17% Wales, and there is only one other Welsh ancestor - a 4xG Grandfather. Could he be responsible for all the Welsh in my estimate? (There is no Welsh at all on my other parent's side).

I have found it difficult to research this branch of my tree, so I'm not certain of the accuracy of my information. I also haven't been through the thousands of matches and identified them all, but none of them who have trees, close or distant, have a common ancestor or shared matches on that line.

Could no matches simply mean no-one from that branch has been tested, or would it indicate the ancestors I have recorded aren't actually mine?

Thanks as always for the wonderful people on this forum.

We believe this is a photo of either Ellen b. 1874 or her mother Jane b.1850, Australia

I'm not great at guessing ages, but if she's in her early 20s, for example, that would put the photo somewhere around the mid 1890s for Ellen or 1870s for Jane.

I'm leaning towards it being Ellen in mid-late 1890s, but can anyone confirm or deny based on the dress style, hairstyle, pose, even the palm plant?

Thank you

Greetings all, and happy new year!

I'm trying to find when my ancestor George Mackay arrived in Canada - some time between 1871 when he was seen in the Scotland census and 1875 when he marries in Toronto - so looking through all the shipping records I can find.
He was a stonemason/builder by trade in any of the records I've found so far, so that's one of my clues.
I've found one or two possibilities but in this incoming passenger list (for the St David) I cannot make out what the attached occupation is supposed to be.
Can anyone help?

Thank you

Canada / Elizabeth Marion MACKAY b. abt 1875 Toronto. Who's her mother?
« on: Sunday 20 November 22 00:32 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I've discovered one of my brick wall ancestors was born in Toronto, Canada. Hurrah! A breakthrough! Or so I thought... The wall must be double-brick, because I can't seem to get any further, and have very little experience with Canadian genealogy research. Can anyone help?

Here's what I do know:

She was born in Toronto, Canada, around 1875 (according to her son's birth certificate in November 1901 in Manly, Sydney - she's 25 and the birthplace is noted.)

She married Robert Alexander WALLER as Elizabeth Marion MACKAY, in Marrickville, Sydney, Australia, in 1895.

Her father's name was George MACKAY according to her marriage certificate in 1895, and death index in 1937.

I know a fair bit about Robert Alexander Waller's family, including my branch who came to Australia, and a sister of his who emigrated to Canada, but Elizabeth/Lily Mackay is the mystery I'm trying to unravel here.

They had 3 sons:
Robert George Mackay WALLER b.1901, Manly, Sydney - she is Elizabeth Marion on the birth certificate, and Lily Marion on his marriage certificate in 1921.

Albert Victor WALLER b. 1909 in Glebe, Sydney - she is Eliza on the birth index, Eliza Maria on the baptism record, and Lily Marion on his death index in 1936.

Harry Mackay WALLER b. 1911 in Glebe, Sydney - she is Eliza M on the birth index and baptism record.

I don't know who her mother is, when she arrived in Australia, nor whether she had family left behind in Canada. ??? I would be grateful to receive suggestions on where and how to find more information.

Thank you.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Irish place name from Co. Antrim
« on: Sunday 09 October 22 03:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi clever handwriting decipherists!

Please help me figure out where my Kennedy ancestors came from in County Antrim.

These two images are from their Assisted Immigrant's shipping record. It looks to me something like
Kesherken but I can't find anywhere with that name... the closest I can find is Rasharkin.

Any ideas?

Australia / Were Henry and William GREENTREE brothers or cousins?
« on: Thursday 01 September 22 04:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I'm revisiting some older research, much of which has been passed on to me by others via forums, mailing lists etc.

The convicts Henry b. c1781 (my 4xG Gf) and William b. c1784 in Sussex, were transported to Australia, arriving in 1815 per "Marquis of Wellington", having stolen a sheep.

Henry was already married to Jane Pope, who followed with their children, and had another shortly after arriving. (m. 10 Feb 1803 Westbourne, Sussex).
William married Mary Callow in Australia in 1829.

They've given rise to MANY Greentree descendants in Australia.

The info I've been given is that Henry's parents are Thomas Greentree and Ann Jackson, Thomas being the son of Thomas Greentree and Mary Wyatt; and that Henry and William were brothers. I'm not sure where this information originally comes from but it seems to be all over the web.

I've since found reference to William's parents being a John Greentree (son of Thomas Greentree and Mary Wyatt) and Ann Davies, making him Henry's cousin rather than brother...

But where do I find the actual information that verifies any of this?
