Sussex / Can someone from Lewes do me a favour?
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 01:44 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone from Lewes be able to pop into the All Saints Centre, along Friars Walk, and take a digital photograph of headstone (pictured here) for me, and then email it to me?

I only have poor quality photos and cannot make out the picture at the top of the headstone....

It would be greatly appreciated!!

Kind Regards

J

So far the suggestions are as follows: Crane, stork, heron, magpie, raven, crow, great bustard, pigeon. Also, there was a suggestion that the tail looks like that of a ‘barn swallow’.

Personally, I have absolutely no idea at all…I thought it looks a little like a female pheasant.

Other suggestions?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Deciphering an old seal…
« on: Saturday 28 April 12 05:27 BST (UK)  »
Seven year lease dated 1831 Durrant Ade and Samuel Hemsley both of Lewes.
This seal was attached to ‘Hemsley’ as you can see.

But what is it of? (My guess is a crane or stork ???)
And what does it mean? By that I mean the meaning of what is on the seal, and the meaning of having a seal?

Does the existence of a seal increase the likelihood of the bearer being an armiger?

Cheers

Sussex Lookup Requests / licensed victualler in lewes
« on: Friday 24 February 12 04:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hey all, especially Chrisin1066Land.

Can anyone look in a  pre-1851 trade directory (Lewes) for a licensed victualler  in high street Lewes by the name of Samuel Hemsley?

I'm wanting the name/address of the pub/inn.

The census from 1841 didn't reveal the specific address but my best guess would be 'the rainbow' 179 high st. Merely because the next owner was a Mr Bodle and Samuel's wife was Ann Hemsley (nee Bodle).

« on: Tuesday 08 February 11 08:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Could someone tell me when SAMUEL HEMSLEY of lewes might have been born.
He fathered a son named Thomas in 1812 Apr 3.
Was married to a Mary Hemsley (I think).
Was apparently at some point a dairy man.

Cheers

Kent Lookup Requests / Thomas Botting Hemsley
« on: Sunday 16 January 11 07:55 GMT (UK)  »

Hello, I am looking for information on my (gx3)grandfather and his father Samuel.

My (gx3) grandfather's name was Thomas Botting Hemsley.
The 1861 Census states his birthplace as Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
An 1848 Marriage Certificate states his Father's name and occupation as:
Samuel Hemsley, Licensed Victualler.
Also an entry from www.familysearch.org suggests his D.O.B. As 03/04/1812.

Might someone please be able to check parish records at Tunbridge Wells for a Thomas Botting Hemsley circa 03/04/1812. Apparently he was christened in St Marylebone Rd, St Marylebone, London 22/06/1825, so his christening records should not be in Tunbridge Wells.

He was a Teacher at the Free School, Southborough in 1840 according to Pigots. I know that he latter become an Auctioneer/Appraiser and owned/lived at Osborne House and Osborne Lodge, 10 and 12 Mount Ephraim Road respectively. Died in 1884 whilst living at 7 Urswick Rd, Hackney, London. Sired at least six children and married, I believe, four times.

His father, Samuel is of interest to me though I know nothing about him. The 1841 census reveals a Samuel Hemsley at Lewes of suitable age, who is also a Victualler but this is only mildly corroboratory.

I would check these details myself but live in the English antipodes and requests from here are both expensive and extraordinarily slow so would appreciate any assistance.

Kind Regards

J. Hemsley

P.S.
I know that the one called  Casalguidi has mentioned him before on this forum...
