Shropshire / School, St John's Hill, Shrewsbury
« on: Thursday 23 March 17 14:59 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone with an interest in Shrewsbury local history might know what type of school would have been at 31 St John's Hill in Shrewsbury in the 1880s, please?  I have a girl who shows on the 1881 census as a pupil there. From what I can see of the family it seems unlikely that they would have been able to afford to send her to a paying school, and I wondered if it was a special school of some type?
Thanks in advance, for any constructive suggestions!

Warwickshire Completed Lookup Requests / Harry Dean, Hockley, Birmingham
« on: Thursday 01 December 16 17:21 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if there is anyone using this forum that has easy access to late 1800s baptismal records, please?
I am researching a Harry Dean, who was killed in action in WW1.
So far I have unearthed very little information about him, apart from the address of an aunt, and the fact that he was born in Hockley, Birmingham.  Rather unhelpfully, the soldiers died and CWGC information doesn't give his age at death. I know that he enlisted quite early in WW1 long before conscription, so working on the principle that he was at the younger end of the scale.
What would be really great, would be if someone could check for a baptism for Harry Dean, in Hockley, probably between 1885 and 1899.  Hopefully that should cover it.  There are a couple of possible matches on Ancestry, but not enough information to tell if either was born in Hockley.  Please delete, if this is an inappropriate request, thank you  ;)

London and Middlesex / Harry Dean born Lambeth 1887
« on: Sunday 27 November 16 19:03 GMT (UK)  »
This is a real long shot, but it's always worth asking, so here goes:
I'm researching a Harry Dean, and don't have a lot to go on. What I do know is - he was born on 15 April 1887, allegedly in Lambeth [but I'm struggling to identify the birth registration, maybe close to Lambeth??]
I have a copy of his papers when he joined the navy in 1902, and that doesn't have any family details other than his widow's name and address - Olive, living in Princes Square, Kennington Cross.

He died on 26 December 1917, as a result of enemy action, aboard Valkyrie.
What I'm trying to do is put some detail behind his name, but really struggling to identify him on census returns - have looked at Harry/Henry/Harold, but pretty much scuppered by my poor knowledge of how the London Boroughs fit together.  The only ones that mention Lambeth don't have a son that fits my man's description.
Can't find a christening record online to confirm parents.

If anyone has suggestions that might help me narrow this man down to a particular family, I'd really appreciated it.  Thank you

Cheshire / Iscoyd baptismal records
« on: Monday 02 May 16 13:51 BST (UK)  »
This may be a simple question, but I'm going round in circles, so decided I'd see if any local Rootschatters could set me on the right path, please.
If I have it right, Iscoyd is in Wales [Flintshire] but is associated with the Cheshire parish of Malpas.  I'm hunting for a baptism for one Mary Porter, who consistently claimed to have been born in Iscoyd c 1803 on her census returns.  The Marriage record in 1824 [Malpas] shows both Mary and her husband Thomas to have been 'of this parish and township of Iscoyd' and resident in Malpas.
Thomas' baptism was recorded at Malpas, but I'm failing to find anything for Mary.
Does anyone know of other places where a baptism might have taken place for a child born in Iscoyd, please?
I've tried searching for those in Shropshire, Cheshire and Flintshire, but no luck so far. Thanks in advance for any bright ideas you may suggest to help reduce my ever decreasing circles!

Staffordshire / Inspiration? Looking for an Ellam death, Wolverhampton.
« on: Monday 11 April 16 22:25 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if there are any roots chatters who might be able to set me off in another direction.
I'm looking for the death of Peter Ellam, born 1824, Stockport area, but lived for most of his adult life in Heath Town area of Wolverhampton.
The last I can see of him is on the 1871 census return, where he appears with his wife Rose and five children.  Occupation listed as labourer in iron works.
In 1881 Rose shows as the head of the family, but is marked down as married.  There are four children with her, including Eliza, born 1873 [Peter is listed as her father on her birth certificate and is listed on the christening record]. Rose lists her occupation as charwoman, and lives at Court 1 Shrubbery St, Wolverhampton.
By 1891 Rose is a boarder with an Edward Fox, and her marital status shows as S
He doesn't show on the local workhouse census return, or prison, as far as I can see.
I've scoured the death registrations and local burials, used as many name variants as I can think of, and can find no sign of him! I reckon the death could be anywhere between 1873 and 1891
Any suggestions of where else I might search would be really appreciated.  Many thanks!

Warwickshire / Toft family - Birmingham
« on: Saturday 27 February 16 15:42 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if any Rootschatters in the Birmingham area are able to remember a company that had vans with the name W M Toft on the side - sorry, not much more information than that - I'm looking for a friend in Canada, whose relative remembers seeing the vans but can't pin them down to a particular firm! Possibly builders, but by no means certain. Sorry to be so vague!!

Shropshire / Hampton Bank
« on: Wednesday 11 February 15 14:07 GMT (UK)  »
I'm new to Shropshire, and hope that someone will be able to give me a bit of direction with the local geography, please.
I have two family members who gave their birth place on the census returns as Hampton Bank.  The only place I can find that looks like it might be relevant is Hampton Loade.  Does anyone know if this is the same place, please.  If it is, would you be able to suggest the most likely place that they might have gone for christenings - IGI don't have anything under Hampton, and I really don't know what's close by.  Many thanks ;)

For Sale / Wanted / Events / New Book: Selby [Yorkshire] during World War one
« on: Wednesday 11 February 15 13:27 GMT (UK)  »
It has only just occurred to me to post about my book here - I've compiled a book about how Selby [Yorkshire] experienced World War one.  Using the local newspaper of the time, it covers the whole of the War through to December 1918. There are extensive extracts from the paper, and many mentions of local families.
I've been delighted with sales locally, and have, so far, managed to donate profits of £170 to the Royal British Legion.
Doing Our Bit is available as an ebook, or hard copy from  http://www.lulu.com/shop/jacky-cooper/doing-our-bit/paperback/product-21685906.html
I do have a couple of copies available at home, if you're not happy about ordering from the publisher. Please send a message if interested, many thanks.

Staffordshire / Heath Town area burials
« on: Tuesday 15 April 14 20:55 BST (UK)  »
I think this is probably a fairly simple query for people who know the area, but being local to North yorkshire, I don't know Wolverhampton area well at all! I know that several people in my tree are buried in the graveyard at Holy Trinity, Heath Town - the church website has a brilliant page with .pdf pages listing all of the burials and grave references - however, I still have several people who lived in Heath Town, and probably died there. So, my query is; would someone local be able to give me some ideas of other likely places to be buried for people who lived in Heath Town [late 1800s through to mid 1900s] ? Many thanks, much appreciated ;)
