Sussex / The Reverend Thomas Hudson of Fittleworth (died 1819)
« on: Saturday 16 November 19 15:48 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching a family called Hudson of Beetham in south Westmorland (now Cumbria).  I have just discovered that one of the family was an ordained Anglican clergyman.  He was vicar of Brighton (and Chaplain to the Prince Regent) and finally Vicar of Fittleworth, where he died and was buried in 1819.  His widow Elizabeth died in Brighton in 1823, and was also buried at Fittleworth.
My question is this: does anyone know if there a monument or memorial to these two in Fittleworth Church?  If there is, then I would make sure we had a detour next time we are travelling through Sussex.
Hope someone can help.  Thank you.

Lancashire / Ezra Woolston of Halton Green, Halton nr Lancaster, Doctor of Physick
« on: Wednesday 26 June 19 20:55 BST (UK)  »
My research has led me to this man.  He appears to have been a Doctor of Physick.  There's some circumstantial evidence to suggest that his wife was called Susanna, but I'm not entirely sure.  Whoever it was, Ezra and his wife had several children baptized at Halton in the 1650s and 1660s, and I descend from Agnes Woolston bap 1661.  Agnes later married and moved to Bolton le Sands, but on her death, her body was brought back to Halton to be buried there.
Apart from odd references in deeds (found on the internet) I really can find nothing about him - nothing about his birth / education (Oxbridge?) / marriage or death.  If his wife was Susannah she was a widow by 1696 (Lease at the John Rylands Library), and there's a Susanna Woolston who also died at Bolton le Sands and was also buried at Halton in the early 18th century.
Can anyone add any more details, please?

Lancashire / Richard Hudson 1825-1853 of Ulverston, wine and spirit merchant
« on: Friday 31 May 19 10:42 BST (UK)  »
I am related to this family who were originally in Cartmel as innkeepers.  One of the family moved to Ulverston and built up a small business as brewers and wine and spirit merchants.  Richard is one of this family.  He sadly died young (in his 20s) but he did have a wife and a son.  I know about them.  My question is this - does anyone know where and when he was married?  I know his wife was Eleanor (Ellen) Wright born 1822 at Rampside near Barrow in Furness; I also know that after Richard's death she then married William Orr (one of Richard's relatives) and they lived and died at Cartmel.  She was buried with her second husband and mentioned on his MI (and also added to Richard's MI at Ulverston!)  I have all that information, but still cannot trace a marriage.  Their son Richard was born in 1846 at Ulverston (GRO index confirms that), but I am puzzled by the lack of marriage...
Can anyone help please?

Westmorland / Robert Barton, born Whasset, Heversham 1834. What happened to him?
« on: Saturday 06 April 19 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know what happened to Robert Barton?  He was the son of my ancestor Ellen/Eleanor Davis of Bolton le Sands and her husband William Barton (married at Burton 28 May 1833).
Robert is with his parents at Woodhouse, Heversham on the 1841 census, and then vanishes.  William Barton died in 1854, and after that Ellen lived with her first child John West Davis.  I know about that side of the family, but Robert Barton remains a puzzle.
Note :  I am fairly certain that he was not the Robert Barton who married Jane Dixon at Bolton le Sands in 1858 (father's name in marriage register is not William Barton).
Can anyone help, please?
Thanks

Cheshire / Lewis family of Birkenhead
« on: Friday 11 September 15 12:10 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help, please?  My kinswoman Eleanor Taylor (born Kendal 1861) married James Lewis (born Birkenhead c1863) at St. Paul's Church, Tranmere on 26 Dec 1885.  They had at least two children, Naomi born 1886 and Harold born 1890 (both Birkenhead).  I can find this family on the 1901 and 1911 censuses, both in Birkenhead.  But I cannot find them in 1891.
Is anyone else researching them?  There is a tree on ancestry which misplaces this Eleanor -  she was the daughter John Taylor and his wife Dorothy (nee Rowlinson) of Kendal.
Thank you

Durham / Birkby Wood of Bishop Auckland
« on: Monday 01 December 14 17:58 GMT (UK)  »
I'm researching Birkby Wood of Bishop Auckland.  He was my gt grandfather's brother and was born in Carnforth Lancashire on 25 October 1881(date from the family Bible).  You would think with such an unusual name (it's a family tradition going back to the 18th cent) he would be easy to follow....I have found him on the 1911 census at Bishop Auckland.  He married  Jane Dobinson in 1908, and they had four children - Zena 1911 (she appears twice on the census, once with her parents and once with her grandparents!), Mary 1912, Henry 1916, Norman 1923.  I also found a soldier's file on Birkby  (he was in the Durham Light Infantry) , which was very informative telling me he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (I'm writing that detail from memory).  But after that I can find nothing more.  Nobody ever spoke about him in the family, and yet I met several people who would have known him.  Is anyone else researching him, or does anyone know anything more?  Any further information would be appreciated.  thank you.

Lancashire / Blamire family of Ulverston
« on: Saturday 12 April 14 12:47 BST (UK)  »
I am researching the families of my gt grandfather's sisters.  I have now come to Agnes Eleanor Pearson (born Ulverston 1862) who married William Blamire (1855 - 1899) at Dalton in Furness in 1883 (she was working in his father's Inn at Ulverston in 1881 census).
I have traced 6 children so far: Betsy Blamire 1883-1899, Frank Pearson Blamire 1884-1915 (did he train as a doctor??), Agnes (Adgie) Blamire 1885-1980 (went to USA 1923), William Blamire 1889-1979 (went to USA 1913), Harry Blamire 1891-1907 (apparently went to Australia prospecting for gold and died out there), Ethel 1892 - what happened to her??  Most of this family are on the 1901 census at Ulverston, but some do not appear at all in any of the censuses (e.g. I've not found Frank anywhere).
Some of this may be due to poor indexing, but I'm left with gaps and wondering where they went.  I have been using An....but think that FindMyPast may be better indexed?  I also wonder what happened to Agnes Eleanor after she was widowed - no record of a death and no trace in 1911 census.  Did she go to Scotland?  Agnes (Adgie) was living in Glasgow prior to emigrating to USA in 1923 (Ellis Island entry record).
Can anyone help please?
Thank you.

Devon / William Westacott of Chittlehampton
« on: Tuesday 18 February 14 17:46 GMT (UK)  »
I have been following this man who married my relative Ann Jane Pearson in Swansea in 1877.  There are several problems with researching him.  The first is that there are two people called William Westacott, both born in the Chittlehampton area in c.1853 (both there on the 1871 census), and both moved to Swansea in the 1870s.  My William was a tailor whom I believe to be the son of George Westacott tailor of Chittelhampton (details on marriage certificate and identification from census and newspapers).  The other is a labourer.  This is important since William Westacott the tailor embarked on a life of crime (Barnstaple Quarter Sessions 1875, Swansea Quarter Sessions 1877 (twice) Swansea Assizes 1878 (this followed by a spell in prison).  Then the whole family moved to Wednesbury in the West Midlands (assumed the name of West - there on the 1881 census). And finally another appearance in court in 1882.  Then silence.  What happened to him then?  Has anyone else attempted to unravel this man and his criminal record?  The Victorian newspapers are very helpful but do sensationalise him and describe him as a most desperate character wanted in several counties for unsolved burglaries.  There's at least one tree on an...try which confuses the two Williams (I'm not surprised).  I'd happily share what I've found so far with other researchers.

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Westacott & Pearson of Swansea
« on: Friday 07 February 14 17:51 GMT (UK)  »
I've traced my Pearson relatives from Manchester to Swansea in the 19th century, but I'm stuck on Ann Jane Pearson (born 1860 Manchester). She married William Westacott in 1877 in Swansea, and there appear to be two children, Clifford Richard Westacott (1878 Swansea) and William Leslie Westacott (1880 Wednesbury, Staffordshire).  Then they vanish and I can't find any of them in the 1881 census.  Can anyone help please?  I have found Clifford and Leslie with their Pearson grandparents in Swansea in 1891, and followed them after that in 1901 and 1911, but there's no further trace of their parents.
