Midlothian / Clarification of Birth Details and WW1 Grave
« on: Wednesday 12 November 14 16:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am posting this on Midlothian Section as this person lived most of his life there.

On June 20th 1893 at Buckhaven, Fife, James Walton was born to Jessie Walton. No father is mentioned but at the side of this record there is a comment regarding paternity that I cannot quite make out. Can anyone help me with this entry?

If there was a paternity claim, where might I find out more about it and would there be any documentary records that I can access?

It looks as though James was then brought up by Jessie’s sister, my Grandmother and her husband, Alison (Alice, nee Walton) and Walter Marsden

On the 1901 Newcastle census James is listed as a son i.e. James MARSDEN.  Might this just be an assumed surname?  Might there be a formal adoption and if so, how can I access this information?

In 1895 at Stockton-on-Tees Alice and Walter’s first son, Walter, was born and he also appears on the 1901 census along with another younger son, Richard, born in Edinburgh.

Alice and Walter Marsden then had 2 more children, Janet and Sam.  Alice was subsequently widowed and remarried Robert Glendinning MUNDELL in 1909 in Leith. They had one daughter, Robina.

The 1911 Leith Census lists all of the children as step-children surnamed MARSDEN, except the final daughter of this couple, Robina MUNDELL.

Robert Glendinning Mundell died in WW1 and I have found his war grave in Weymouth

Walter Marsden (Jnr) died on 10th March 1918 and his war grave is at Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.  However, he is listed as Walter MUNDELL, (not Marsden).

I understand that James also died in WW1 but have been unable to locate any information of his whereabouts.  I don’t know if he enlisted as WALTON, MARSDEN or MUNDELL.

Can anyone help me find out what happened to James?

My Grandmother mourned and spent part of every subsequent Armistice Day thinking of these three losses, for the rest of her life.

My thanks for any responses.  Mundell

Midlothian / Corporation Buildings, Gile Street, Leith
« on: Friday 31 October 14 14:20 GMT (UK)  »
My Grandmother, Alice Marsden, was widowed and lived with her 6 children at 'Corporation Buildings, Giles Street, Leith.  She then remarried and became Alice Mundell, and this is still the address given on that marriage record. This area has since been redeveloped and I have been able to find out very little about it.  There has been a suggestion that it may have been a Poor/Work-House, but I cannot find any references to bear this out.

If anyone has information or even photographs, I would be very grateful.  Mary

World War One / WW1 troop movements of D (or B) Company, 14th Royal Scots Regiment
« on: Saturday 31 December 11 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please tell me about the wartime movements of my Scottish Grandfather, Robert Glendinning Mundell,
                   Service No. 4369,
                   Sergeant, D (or B) Company,
                   14th Royal Scots Regiment
who died in Weymouth 1915.

His death cert. states that he died on 12th May 1915 at the Royal Hospital Melcombe Regis of 1. Pneumonia  2. Empysema  Operation Pulmonary Embolism

I only discovered his whereabouts last year and was able to visit his war grave, at Old Melcombe Cemetery, this summer.  I understand that regimental records were destroyed by fire in 1940 and so have not been able to determine relevant troop movements.  The 1914-1918 website -The Long Walk - is not specific about this unit.

Troop movements might help me to understand whether Robert Mundell became ill and died before embarkation to France, i.e. during training, or if he served in France and was shipped back home with his illness.

Many thanks.   Mundell

US Lookup Requests / Please help find Place of Marriage in Michigan
« on: Monday 11 July 11 20:38 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to see an image of, or purchase a marriage Cert. for Robert McCondichie (b. about 1898), and Elizabeth Forrester (b. about 1901), both from Scotland but married in Michigan

I think their marriage was on 14th Feb. 1930.

I have them individually on a passenger list in 1929 and as a married couple on the 1930 census in Wayne.  However, I think they were married in a different place, possibly Grand Rapids? Elizabeth returned to Scotland later in 1930 for the birth of their first child.

I cannot order a cert. from 'Michigan USA-MDCH' without this information.  Also the cost of ordering this way seems expensive.

Would anyone please advise me of the best way to go about this?

Thanks,  Mundell

Bedfordshire Completed Look ups / COMPLETED - Sarah Axam
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 16:04 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find out Sarah Axam's maiden name.  I don't know to whom she was married.

She was mother to Mary Axim married to William Lambert in Kempston in 1829.

She lived with this couple from at least 1941 (when she was aged 61) until 1861.

I believe she died during the 1860's as there are a couple of index entries that could be her.

1841, 1851 and 1861 census are consistent about her age.  She is described as a lacemaker and latterly as a pauper lacemaker. The 1861 census gives her birthplace as Maulden

1841 Ampthill Union Workhouse has a Sarah Axam aged 60

Any help would be much appreciated.   Mundell

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Elias and Sarah Prangnell I.O.W.
« on: Monday 23 May 11 11:03 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone advise me how to obtain further information about Elias Prangnell b. about 1806 and Sarah Prangnell b. about 1816 (according to the 1841 Census which has details of their children aged between 8 yrs. and 1 Yr.)

I have Jane Prangnell's birth cert. 0f 1840 which states Sarah's maiden name as HUNT (I think).  I can find no marriage for Elias and Sarah, not can I find birth details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Fife / Helen Kenley and Elizabeth 'Hawkey'
« on: Friday 08 April 11 17:13 BST (UK)  »
Information Please.

My Great Grandparents, John Walton and Janet Brown were married on 13/04/1860 at Leven, Scoonie, Fife.  Any assistance to trace their parents, particularly their mothers, would be appreciated.

John's mother was apparently Helen Kenley, but I have not been able to trace their marriage or her birth.

Janet's mother is given as Elizabeth Hawkey.  I have seen several variations of this name in connection with Andrew Brown - Halket/Hakney/Hackney/Hawkey/Brown, and am confused.

Thanks, Mundell
