World War Two / USA Army WWII
« on: Monday 26 October 15 22:30 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my Mum's father, whom was an American GI that came over to the UK during WWII. My Mum was born in July 1945 in Plymouth, Devon, England. My Nan passed away in 2007 and I  like to solve this mystery for my mum.

Moderator comment. Details and photo of possible living person removed as per Rootschat policy

The only picture we have of him is the attached. It appears to show that he is wearing US Army khakis and an overseas cap. His rank is Corporal. Originally, I was told that the shoulder insignia was an 9th Infantry Division patch, however I subsequently was informed that it looks similar, but the 9th patch has 8 petals on it, not 6 as the one the picture shows.

I hope someone can help in terms of perhaps identifying the division and a way to confirm a close match on enlistment

Thanks

US Lookup Requests / Chuck Pascol WWII -American GI
« on: Monday 26 October 15 21:26 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my Mum's father, whom was an American GI that came over to the UK during WWII. My Mum was born in July 1945 in Plymouth, Devon, England. My Nan passed away in 2007 and whilst she openly talked about him, I cannot now go back and ask further questions or seek clarification.  I really would like to solve this mystery for my mum.

All that I recall was that Nan said he was called "Chuck” Pascol (believe this is the correct spelling, but could be Pascoe). I believe “Chuck” is/was a common nickname for Charles.

He was born around 1921-1922 and either was born in Chicago or lived there before the outbreak of war. He was half-Italian on his mother's side, and father was possibly called William. My Nan subsequently remarried in 1947 and my Mum's birth certificate does not have any father's details.

I believe he implied that his profession was a “barber” but also understand he was somewhat of a gigolo with the ladies!

Given, the facts are sketchy and I have not been able find any individual that matches 100% so far, then I thought it would be helpful to narrow done based on his military involvement in WW2.

The only picture we have of him is the attached. It appears to show that he is wearing US Army khakis and an overseas cap. His rank is Corporal. Originally, I was told through the Ancestry website, that the shoulder insignia was an 9th Infantry Division patch, however I subsequently was informed that it looks similar, but the 9th patch has 8 petals on it, not 6 as the one the picture shows.

I am in the Uk so not too familiar with the best way to research military records in the US. Perhaps there is a military researcher on this forum that can help with identification of the patch and perhaps how I found out which army recruits enlisted into that division that might possibly be my grandfather!

I hope someone can help.

World War One / Help trying to identify participation in WW1-Wiliam Rundle
« on: Saturday 22 November 14 21:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I wonder if anyone can help me. This is the only picture my Nan had of her Dad. He was called William rundle and born c 1884  in plymouth, Devon, UK and died 1941. I want to try and find out more about him as he is a bit of a mystery.  Can anyone identify what uniform/regiment he belonged to during the war and perhaps assist in locating any military records relating to him-- as I have drawn a blank. In particular I want to try and locate the maiden name of his wife selina and her DOB as I'm struggling with his birth certificate and his brother-walter the maiden name is unclear- looks like tamlin!

Any help would be welcome.

Devon Lookup Requests / Lookup request-Joseph TURNER born c 1894
« on: Saturday 05 January 13 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to pin-point a Joseph TURNER whom married Millicent Roberts on 21st May 1921 at the Plymouth Registry Office. On the marriage certificate he was shown as a farm labourer, and his father John Turner (deceased), Railway Engine Driver. He was shown as aged 27.  At the of the wedding it says they were living at 6 Jubilee Place, Embankment Rd, Plymouth. His wife Millicent was pregnant with my Grandad Victor George Turner whom was born 14th August 1921, I understand that Joseph wasnt the father but paid by the family to marry Millicent. On my Grandad's birth certificate his father was shown as  Victor Joseph Turner (and signed as Victor J Turner) as general labourer living at 73 Regent Street, Plymouth.

I am still curious to try and identify whom this Joseph  or Victor Joseph was and found out what happened to him.

Can anyone assist?

Devon / Look up request- William Henry RUNDLE Born c1885 Plymouth
« on: Friday 04 January 13 00:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I wonder if anyone can assist me in finding the birth of William Henry RUNDLE whom was born approx 1885 in Plymouth Devon. There are a number of William RUNDLE's born around that time, and so to order all of the GRO would be prohibitive.  His father was William Henry RUNDLE also with wife called Selina, the former born in Plymouth and latter it appears to be Polruan Cornwall. Would parish records after 1837 show these details?

Also I am stuck on Selina RUNDLE, it is possible her maiden name was Tamlin (although T looks like J ) on birth certificate of Walter RUNDLE (William jnr brother whom was born 17 June 1883)

Any assistance would in solving this for me would be much appreciated.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Birth /Marraige/Death Lookup-Whitchurch
« on: Thursday 05 October 06 23:32 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if any1 can help. I am trying to trace the birth of Thomas Sheppard c 1799 in Whitchurch , Bath & North East Somerset. However, that the records for Whitchurch (Keynesham) appear to be at Bristol City Records Office. I would be keen to learn details of his parents.

Also Thomas married an Ann Harris (born c 1801, Stanton Drew) , again if the marraige records could be found that would be great.

Finally Thomas and Ann appeared to have disappeared after the 1861 census, so I assume that they both died between 1861 and 1871, so wondering if there death records are recorded? I can't find a close match as there appear to be too many results. I also visited the church St Nicholas in Whitchurch whilst passing Bristol but unfortunately I couldn't find any gravestones with Sheppards on them! Any ideas?

I look forward to hearing from any1 that might be able to help.

World War One / 1st world war diaries- Thomas Sheppard
« on: Saturday 09 September 06 23:52 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction and clarify two things

1) What do the terms  Division,   Brigade, Battalion and Regiment mean? and how might I find a comprehensive list for WWI?

2) Specficically, How can I track from a 1st world war medal card for one of my ancestors to the campaign diary . I note that both are available on the National Archives website.

So for example, I know from the CWGC website that my great-uncle died as follows:

In Memory of
Private THOMAS NORGROVE OWEN SHEPPARD

18280, 20th Coy., Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
formerly (10654), Devonshire Regiment
who died age 21
on 02 July 1916
Son of Mrs. M. Sheppard, of 43, Torrington Place, Plymouth, Dcvon.
Remembered with honour
THIEPVAL MEMORIAL

His medal card can be found on National Archives as ref : WO 372/18 Medal card of  Sheppard, Thomas
Corps: Devonshire Regiment
Regiment No: 10654
Rank: Private...
. Although it shows date of death as 3rd July 1916.

Based on this how do I know what Division,   Brigade, Battalion and Regiment , Thomas Sheppard was in, and therefore locate the appropriate War Diary? I can see that his regiment seems to be Devonshire.
However I guess there would have been lots!

I have tried to found out myself , but must admit I am a bit lost as to what all the terminology means and wonder whether there is a easy way of always getting the right  regiment and other details?

Any help would be much appreciated and I am sure that other novices like me would find this information very valuable and interesting.

Thanks
Andrew

Thomas Sheppard (est 1827 Whitchurch)
Hester Sheppard (est 1829 Whitchurch)
Solomon Sheppard (est 1831 Whitchurch)
