World War Two / Decipher entry in Dad's Army Pay Book
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 16:48 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to work out what the last entry is in my Dad's Army Pay Book that lists the "nature of leave".  I can make out that it says "Priv Leave" (Privilege Leave) but I cannot make out the rest of the sentence.  Can anyone help please?

World War Two / Dad's Court Martial
« on: Saturday 17 October 15 16:29 BST (UK)  »
My Dad was subjected to a court martial during WW2 because he accidentally bent his bayonet (when alighting from a troop-carrying truck his bayonet hanging from his waist caught in the gap between the lorry and the tailgate).  I was surprised that as it was accidental it went as far as a court martial.  Fortunately, the Quartermaster Sergeant spoke up for my Dad and said he could straighten the bayonet (which he subsequently did) so the case was dismissed.

Can anyone tell me which of the King's Regulations would have applied?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Photos to be dated
« on: Friday 13 April 12 14:03 BST (UK)  »
My relatives in Montana have sent me copies of two photos that my Great Aunt Elizabeth took with her when she immigrated to the USA in 1898.  I think they could be her mother and father who would have been 52 and 56 respectively in 1898.  Based on their clothing and picture style can anyone offer any suggestions as to the likely date of these pictures?

United States of America / Elizabeth Roberts then Henderson
« on: Sunday 01 January 12 15:24 GMT (UK)  »
My Great Aunt Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Hughes was born in Llandyrnog, Wales on 25 August 1871 and died in the USA on 9 November 1954.  She married someone with the surname of Roberts in Wales and had 2 children whose names were Anne and Maud (not sure if these were their first, second or only names).  She was physically abused by Roberts and her brother (who had already migrated to the USA) helped her flee to America.  She re-married in th USA to someone with the surname of Henderson and subsequently had 3 more children, Helen, Henry & Roberta.  I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to trace her original marriage in the UK and the birth of her first 2 children.  I also cannot find out when she migrated to the USA.  I understand she migrated to Montana and lived in Truly.  Can anyone help with information on her in America which may also help me find more about her early life in the UK as well.  Many thanks

I have a scanned image of my Great Uncle who died in America.  The image is taken from a newspaper and is thus very grainy and pixelated.  It is the only image I have of my Great Uncle and I would love to have it improved if it is possible.  Can anyone help me please?

Denbighshire / Robert Hughes - What Happened to him?
« on: Friday 08 July 11 13:54 BST (UK)  »
I have managed to trace the births, lives and deaths of all the brothers and sisters of my Grandfather William Hughes (Born Pentre Llanrhaeadr 8 Nov 1878, died Meliden 22 Mar 1923) apart from his brother Robert Hughes.  Robert was born in Pentre Llanrhaeadr on 11 June 1883.  He worked as a grocers assistant for my Grandfather who ran the Cash Stores in Meliden near Prestatyn.  When my Grandfather died Robert assisted my Grandmother (Hannah Jane b. 22 Dec 1877 d. 18 Dec 1948) but being a gambler and drinker he stole money from the Stores.  Hannah sold the stores to pay off debts and moved to the Meliden Post Office (that she and my Grandfather owned).  The church persuaded Hannah to take in Robert which she did.  He then proceeded to steal from the Post Office and was arrested.  There the trail goes cold.  I have not been able to find any documented evidence of his arrest and subsequent punishment and the only reference to him was in an obituary for another member of the family in 1949 that mentioned he was living in Widnes.  Can anyone help with information or where I can go from here?

United States of America / Montana Cowboy John Hughes
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 14:11 BST (UK)  »
My Great Uncle John ("Johnnie") Hughes was born in Wales on 4 December 1872 and died in America on 23 June 1957.  The only photo I have of him is from a very poor copy of a newspaper obituary that I attach below.  Does anyone know if it is possible to trace the original article and obtain a better image?  Also, any ideas from the information in the article that I can pursue to find out more about him.  Unfortunately I am not in touch with his descendants so any help or suggestions would be very gratefully received.

Peeblesshire / William Liversage marriage certificate
« on: Tuesday 19 April 11 13:52 BST (UK)  »
All of my family history has so far been in England and Wales.  I was unsuccessful in locating the marriage of William Edward Liversage to Isobel Agnes Esme Weedy.  William was born on 28 November 1923 and was married before 1958 but I could not find a reference to the marriage in England.  A cousin thinks Esme came from Peebles in Scotland so the marriage could have taken place there.  As I am new to obtaining records from Scotland can someone please give me some guidance on how to progress
