Aberdeenshire / the Wallace family
« on: Monday 06 June 16 08:37 BST (UK)  »
I recently received an e-mail concerning the Wallace family and I think they were looking for connections to the Allan family from Peterhead. The trouble is, I canīt find the e-mail now. Does this ring a bell with anybody? I think the sender was a member of the Wallace family.

Best wishes,

David

The Common Room / Social Standing of Shipmasters
« on: Tuesday 10 January 12 08:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everybody,

This is a repost of a query I posted on the "Occupation Interests" section, as I have not received any replies and I thought that somebody, in the "wider community" might know. I have an ancestor, William Allan, who was a shipmaster in the latter part of the 19th Century. Would anybody know the social standing of a shipmaster, in those days?

Best wishes,

Dave

Occupation Interests / Shipmasters

Hi everybody,

How well off would a shipmaster have been, in the second half and latter part of the 19th Century? Was it well paid? My ancestor possibly captained whaling ships.

Best wishes,

Dave  :)

Shetland / The wrecking of the Nova Zembla 1878
« on: Tuesday 13 December 11 08:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everybody,

Apart from the details of the wrecking of the Nova Zembla, given on the Shetlopedia website, can anybody direct me to any more information about the wreck. I don't quite understand if it was wrecked in 1878, how it then went on until 1901 or 1902, when I think it finally was wrecked. Are we talking about the same ship? I read that it was rebuilt. Was that a total rebuild or were parts of the old ship still used as a framework? Does anybody know, where the rebuild was done?

Best wishes,

Dave

Angus (Forfarshire) / Ships registered in Dundee
« on: Wednesday 07 December 11 09:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everybody,

Is there a list of ships that were built in Dundee? I am trying to get a photograph of the 19th century ship the "Nova Zembla" which was a whaler, registered in Dundee.

Best wishes,

Dave

The Common Room / Old newspapers online
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 09:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everybody,

Is it possible to view pages from old newspapers, free online?

My interest concerns my great uncle, William Allan, who was washed overboard from the "Nova Zembla" on 27 October, 1893. He was living in Dundee, Scotland at the time and the ship was registered there.

Best wishes,

Dave  :)

The Common Room / Census Forms

Hi Everybody,

Do you have to give a house number on UK census forms and would you have to have given it on 19th century forms?

Best wishes,

Hi Everybody,

Can anybody tell me where 372 King Street, Aberdeen is...what landmarks it is near? Is it opposite the bus garage?

Many thanks,

Dave
