Another useful index site for the Isle of Man is

Isle of Man Property Owners 1867, and index compiled from James Wood's Atlas & Gazetteer of the same period.

URL: http://www.freewebs.com/woodsatlas1867/

This index was originally created in 1986 and placed on microfiche, which is still available for purchase from MacBeth Genealogical Services of Melbourne, Australia.

Cornwall / Cornish connection with Isle of Man
« on: Saturday 07 August 04 14:15 BST (UK)  »
;)Just to let Cornish posters know that there appears to be a strong genealogical connection from early 1800s at least on an occupation basis (leadminers) with the Isle of Man

If you want to check out Manx Genealogy go to http://www.isleofman.com and click on Manx Genealogy to make a posting at the Genealogy Bulletin Board.

Good luck

Armed Forces / British Naval Records @ Kew
« on: Saturday 27 March 04 15:43 GMT (UK)  »
I have never used the PRO Kew before, therefore am not familiar with the best/easiest way of tapping into their records.  This request is specific to Naval records in the 1870s.

I would be most interested if there is someone out there who could do a lookup, or tell me how to get one done on the following:

Walter Qualtrough bn 1853, Isle of Man went to King Williams College, Castletown, IOM 1865-1869, following which he was sent to London to attend a Church of England Seminary (which one is not known) to become a reverend like his father and grandfather.  However the family in Texas tell me he absconded from the Seminary and instead joined the British Navy (must have been in the very early 1870s) and was supposed to have been shipwrecked of the coast of Ceylon.

He cannot have been in the Navy long (if indeed he actually was  ;)) as he was living in Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada and married in November 1875.  How or when he arrived in Canada has not been established.

Can anyone tell me how best to acquire any records of his time in the Navy if there are any and what these records would include. Is there anyone in London willing to do a search for me please? I am willing to pay reasonable costs.

Also,  is there a way to do a one name extract of British Military records for all periods?

Thank you

The following is a list of web links to Manx surnames being searched by enthusiastic researchers who have created sites on which they have collected information pertaining to that name.  The list is not exhaustive however.....at one time there were several more sites, but these appear now not to be online or have shifted/changed their URLs.

Isle of Man Resources & Offers / Link: Burials, Wills & Marriages indexes

Visit Brian Lawson's site @:

http://www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/Main_Site_index.html  New Link 2013

Not only is there information on Brian's Manx Lawsons there, but also it is fast becoming a wonderful repository for several extensive indexes for Manx resources.

All the parishes in the IOM are covered in the Burial index, and the Will index is very extensive and many of the wills are being transcribed and placed online.

Isle of Man / Manx surname QUALTROUGH
« on: Sunday 21 March 04 12:12 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching QUALTROUGHs world-wide for almost 30 years.

The name originates from the Isle of Man, however I have found Qualtroughs & descendants in most western countries around the world and in some other interesting places also.

Variants include... Qualtraugh, Qualtherough, Qualter/s (not all as most originate in Ireland), Qualtrop, Calthorp (in Devon) Coltrough, although most of these variants refer to useage in the 1700s mainly.

A website for this family name can be found at http://www.qualtrough.org

This site includes scanned images of the book on the family I co-wrote in New Zealand in 1984 called "A QUOTA OF QUALTROUGHS - Early settlers for New Zealand from the Isle of Man"  There are also 3 other subsites, including updated lineages since the above book was published, and a  resource of Qualtrough references from all over the world.

Anyone interested in or connected to this name please contact me.  Thank you.
