Sussex Lookup Requests / Rachael Spinks
« on: Monday 02 July 12 00:25 BST (UK)  »
I hope I am not posting in error the following.  Today I found the reference to my grandmother in the 1901 Sussex Census.   Problem is I can't find it again.  I would really like to know the family and address were she was a servant.   Her age in 1901 is 21, born Norwich Norfolk.  I wrote down: Household, Brighton, East Brighton, Brighton St Peter with west Blatchington St Peter, Brighton, Sussex.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Norfolk / Possible Norfolk Marriage and Divorce
« on: Sunday 01 July 12 15:41 BST (UK)  »
I was looking on the Free BMD index and it lists marriages/divorce.

In the late 1870's was it possible to get a divorce and have it registered.  I would assume the female would revert to her maiden name.

According to the index there was a marriage or divorce of Eliza (Spinks) listed as 4B page 216.

Any help or possible answers appreciated.

Thank you

Norfolk / Mary Anne Middleton

I seem to making some progress after many years.   Any one with a connection to Mary Anne Middleton born about 1823 Mattishall or her husband John Spinks born about 1819 Bintry, or any of their children John born 1847, Richard 1852, Eliz 1854, Hanna 1856, William 1858 and Henry 1860.

Good Morning

Can anyone tell me if there was a military base with housing for families at Barnsley in the 1870's and if so what regiment was stationed there.

Thank you

Norfolk / Surnames: Spinks, Todd, Base
« on: Sunday 27 November 05 03:35 GMT (UK)  »
Good Morning

I have been working the Free BMD to see what I can add.

It was suggested I use Henry as an alternate to Harry.

In Sept 1874 Henry James Spinks married Eliza Jeannette Todd at Yarmouth.

I subtracted 30 years from 1884 (the years of death for my Eliza) checked for a birth.

Eliza J Todd was born in Sept 1854 at Greenwich.

I also found Henry Spinks married Rachel Elizabeth Base at Norwich in Dec. 1875.

I could not find a birth for "Base" that might match 1854, but I realize the F BMD is not complete.

I don't know if the 1871 census for Norfolk (Norwich) is indexed (she would have to be age 18 in 1871)

The 1881 census lists the birthplace for Harry (Henry) as Drayton, and Eliza as Norwich - but this could be wrong as my grandmother (the daughter) shows as Norwich but her birth is given as Barnsley.

My mother did mention there was a family connection to Kent, which if my geography is correct would suggest the first Elizabeth (Jeannette Todd).

Anyone on the list have a "Base" connection in Norwich.

The other longshot is the Eyres or Saunders, if a I can find a connection to Todd or Base, that would also help.

Working with "oral tradition" and "the printed medium", I certainly find "links", but they don't always go where I think they might.

Suggestions welcome.

Norfolk / Surnames: Spinks, Todd, Base

Good Morning

I have been working the Free BMD site and have some new information that may be worth following up.

It was suggested I use Henry as an alternate to Harry when looking things up.

In Sept 1874 Henry James Spinks married Eliza Jeannette Todd at Yarmouth.

I subtracted 30 years from 1884 (the year my Eliza Spinks died) and found and Eliza J Todd born Sept 1854 Greenwich.

In Dec 1875 at Norwich a Henry Spinks married Rachel Elizabeth Base.

I know the free index is not complete.   Anyone on the list have a connection to Rachel Elizabeth Base.   She would have to be age 30 in 1884 to be the one I am looking for.

I don't know if the 1871 census is indexed.

According to the 1881 census my Harry (Henry) was born  in Drayton and age 24, his wife Elizabeth lists Norwich as the place of birth, but this may not be correct as they show Norwich for my grandmother (as place of birth) but she is registered as born in Barnsley (West Yorkshire).

I tend to think the first one (Elizabeth J) may be correct, since my mother told me there was some connection to Kent - is there a way Greenwich relates to Kent.

Any thoughs or suggestions as to how to proceed.

Thanks

Good Morning

I am looking for anyone who has a SPINKS connection in Barnsley between 1850 and 1880.

The first name I am working on is Harry, husband of Elizabeth.

Also would appreciate any links to directories or other guides for that period.

Family History Beginners Board / Birth Registration ID

Hello

I may found something useful to me, but I can't read the "small print"

For a birth in 1879 it does list an Elizabeth, which matches the birth date and possible parents, if my Elizabeth was Elizabeth (Eliza) Rachel and went by Rachel (the 2nd name) for all of her life after her parents died.

She was in Norfolk in 1881 and 1885, but I can only read the Volume Line as 9a (I think) page 227 and the district looks like it might be Haradey.

Fairly certain the H  and the EY are correct, but the rest ?

Where is that, anywhere near Norfolk?

Thanks

Harold
