Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Tree Building Websites

Which are the best tree building websites ?  Is 'My Heritage' any good.  I am not asking for endorsement, and if it is not an appropriate question on forum, please ignore. Again more personal opinion.  There seem to be so many and seem to all want continuous payment to get connected fully, after dangling lots of carrots of knowledge !   ::)

My only fear is using the sites and if the membership (£££) lapses is the tree is lost.  I wrote to one to ask, about re-instatement rules, & continuation or transfer after death.   I would like what I do to be accessible and continuous for future generations etc (even if they have no money to keep paying ?)   :)

Thanks

Hi
I am a real beginner !  I have been searching so many sites for free census / births / deaths / marriages etc information.  Though some are 'free' to a certain point, to 'see' further info to check its right and secondly to get all the info from it costs or you have to give your credit cards for after a trail period.  Is this always the case  :'(       that searching would prob be my best option as have alot of branches to look at with not much info !

ie.  this is the type of info I have :
Mothers side :: As a start my Grandmother Annie Collin (born Golding in 1900 (d 1992) married in Liverpool to John Collin (d - 1944 ?) son of Fredrick (d - 1951 ?).  Hopefully I can branch out from there  ???

What is the best way to go about it ?  My fathers side got confused in Kenya, East Africa ?  so that is a different matter  :o

I don't often ask for help, but this detective work is a little illusive without knowing the best places to start.

Thanks for reading
Jo
