Canada / Pittard & possibly Smith families - Oderin, Newfoundland
« on: Friday 11 March 16 11:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm wondering if anyone can suggest where I might find records of a marriage in Oderin (around 1811, of a Charles PITTARD (he was born 1783 in England). He married a Mary or Mary Ann and they had two daughters in Oderin - Mary in 1812 and Martha in 1814 before all heading to England.

My ancestor, another of their daughters was named Elizabeth Smith PITTARD which did make me wonder if her mothers maiden name might be SMITH.

Any pointers would be most appreciated as its not a region I'm at all familiar with researching.

Thanks,
Kat

Hi there

I am trying to trace my elusive ROBERTS family in the mid to late 1700s into the early 1800s in and around the area of St George the Martyr, Southwark.

I have Thomas ROBERTS born 1750 (possibly to a William and Elizabeth ROBERTS at St George the Martyr), and died 1839 in Buckingham Square, New Kent Road. He married first to an Ann UNKNOWN - they had a daughter Mary in 1792 (& possibly a son too) but am having trouble finding the marriage of Thomas and Ann.

Ann then died (possibly in 1830) and Thomas remarried an Elizabeth. Elizabeth remarried in 1842 after Thomas died in 1839, and the banns record for this has her father as Stephen RADFORD, but cannot find a record of her marriage to Thomas.

Thomas & Ann's daughter Mary (possibly Mary Ann) married Nathaniel CLARK in 1820, had my 3 x gt gf Henry Roberts CLARK in 1821 and a daughter Mary Ann Sarah CLARK in 1823 - but Mary CLARK nee ROBERTS was dead by the time her father wrote his will in 1838. I would dearly love to find her death, along with what happened to her daughter Mary Ann Sarah CLARK born 1823.

Would dearly love any help or suggestions as to where to look :)

Thanks,
Kat

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / COATES Family - Barton-le-Street
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 05:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I am trying to track the COATES family of Barton-le-Street back from my 5 x great grandparents - who were John COATES and Hannah FREER.

I believe Hannah was born around 1755 to William FREER and Ann TAYLOR (and had several siblings - Mary 1749, Ann 1751, Elizabeth 1753 and William 1759), but haven't been able to find a christening to verify that, and I seen from other's trees, that John COATES was born 1752 to a John COATES and Grace ? (and had a sister Jane born 1748), but again, haven't been able to verify any of that.

I am trying to confirm both John and Hannah's parents, and siblings, along with any of the lineage further back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks in advance,
Kat

Hi there

We are researching my 4 x great grandfather Nehemiah ROGERS, we have him in the 1841 census in Bradford Street, Bocking, Essex and he is recorded as being born in the county, so presumably Essex. He is with his wife, Mary (nee WARREN), she was born about 1786 and they married 5 Dec 1820 in Chelmsford, Essex. They have five children, Nehemiah (1825), Timothy (1826), William (1827), Rebecca (1830) and Elizabeth (1833).

We have a death cert for Nehemiah, he died Mar 1849 and was buried at St Mary the Virgin, Bocking, and believe his wife died Apr - Jun 1865 in Bocking (there is a likely burial also at St Mary the Virgin). The 1851 and 1861 census for her, has her born in either Warsop or Worksop, Nottinghamshire.

We have tried quite unsuccessfully to find a possible birth or baptism record for either Nehemiah ROGERS (born about 1782) or Mary WARREN (born about 1786), so any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks,
Kat

Hi there

I have been trying to trace my 3 x great grandfather John BENNETT. He was born 1831 in Dudley, Staffordshire and was convicted of burglary in 1847, sentenced to transportation and sent out on the ship Adelaide to Aust in 1849. From his subsequent marriage in 1857 in Victoria, to a Lucy DUKE, I have his parents as Eli and Frances BENNETT.

At present, the family I am interested in in the 1841 census, is a Frances BENNETT born abt 1796, living with her children Isaac (1820), Eli (1826), Joseph (1828), John (1831) and William (1834). The eldest three boys are all coalminers, and there is no father / husband present.

I have also been able to find christening records for the children Isaac and Eli, as well as what would appear to be other siblings Edward, Jane and Joseph (not the one above, this one was born and died 1822). All of these christenings were in Sedgely, Staff and list the parents as Joseph and Frances.

While this doesn't match with John BENNETT 1831's parents being an Eli and Frances, the Frances is the only one I could find that might be a possibility - and of course I was very much intrigued by a son being named Eli, and furthermore a son being named Isaac, as John BENNETT had one child after marrying Lucy DUKE, a John Isaac BENNETT born 1858 in Victoria, so feel it is worth further investigation.

However this is where I have got stuck, firstly I haven't been able to find christenings for our possible John born 1831 or his old brother Joseph born about 1828, or younger brother William born about 1832 - 1834 (it varies with later census records), and secondly, I haven't been able to find any record of a marriage of a Joseph BENNETT to a Frances ?. The first christening that would appear to be theirs, is 1819, so between that and Frances being born about 1796, believe the marriage would be between 1814 and 1819 at most.

Any help or suggestions, would be greatly appreciated?

Surrey Lookup Requests / Henry Roberts Clark & Family
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 13:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I am struggling to find any trace of my 3 x great grandfather - Henry Roberts Clark (bn 1821 @ St George the Martyr, Southwark) after the 1851 census. He married Elizabeth Smith Pittard in Dec 1841 and have found them with their 4 children in the 1851 census:

Children are: Alice - born abt 1842 in Newington, Henry Roberts born 25 Mar 1843, Jessie (poss. Jessy - dtr) born abt 1846 in Newington and Alfred born abt 1850 in Horsleydown.

Henry Roberts Clark bn 1843 is my gg grandather and he came out to NZ about 1865 and settled / married here, however I cannot find him, his siblings or their father beyond the 1851 census. The mother / wife - Elizabeth Smith Clark nee Pittard died 3 qtr 1854 in Southwark.

Any suggestions or assistance would be greatly appreciated  :)

Yorkshire (North Riding) Lookup Requests / Charles Charlton Corner - Nunnington
« on: Sunday 08 January 12 03:35 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm searching for any information on Charles Charlton Corner.
I have that he was born about 1745 in Nunnington, Yorkshire, and was buried 8 Oct 1830 also in Nunnington.
I have two marriages of a Charles Charlton Corner, one in 1771 to a Mary Cowper, and one in 1795 to a Ann Boyes. I am not sure if this is the same Charles Charlton Corner marrying two woman or two different Charles. The first wife, Mary, died in 1793 so it is possible the marriage to Ann Boyes was a second marriage.

I have a number of children from both marriages (including my direct line), who I am working on tracking at the moment. I am particularly keen to track Charles Charlton Corner's parents and haven't had any luck finding records of a baptism / christening.

Thanks,
Kat :)

Essex Lookup Requests / Robert Cawston, hatter bn 1811 - 1816, Colchester Essex
« on: Saturday 10 September 11 12:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I'm after any information on my ggg grandfather Robert William Cawston born about 1811 in Colchester Essex, but ideally trying to track his birth or baptism, and parents / family.

He married Mary Coulsell on 29 Sep 1839 at St Saviour, Surrey and they had five children in St Saviour (Mary Ann 1840, Robert William 1841, Henrietta 1843, Helena 1846 and Emma 1852 - possibly a 6 child Rebecca 1851 who died 1852).

Robert William Cawston was a hatter (consistent across census records, and on his marriage cert), and I know from their marriage cert that his father was Joseph Cawston, farmer but thats where I hit a brick wall!

Thanks,
Kat

Radnorshire / Meyricks in Presteigne, 1760 onwards
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 14:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm trying to trace the Meyrick family in Presteigne primarily from about 1760 to 1850. My great great great grandfather, Peter Puget Meyrick (not sure if there is a connection to Peter Puget who was in the area) was born in Presteigne about 1806 (although was married and lived his adult life in London), and Ive just been able to confirm his father was a Thomas Meyrick (butcher), whom I believe was born about 1760. I believe he had a brother Edward Stanton Meyrick (bn 1803 in Presteigne, but living very close to him in London), and several possible siblings in Presteigne:
Thomas bn abt 1811 - also a butcher & married Ann ?
William bn abt 1796 - also a butcher & married an Isabella Stephens
John bn ? - butcher, unmarried
Eliza - married a Thomas Jones who died not long after.

Plus a host of other Meyricks (Sarah who married a William Jones, Elizabeth who married a Thomas Lewis, Ann who married a John Powell).

What I'm most intrigued about is finding the birth details of Thomas Meyrick (approx 1760)... his marriage, and confirming his children (or indeed if all these Meyrick children were his.. or perhaps children of his siblings).

I'm very new to this, and am currently trawling the census records, free bmd and search ancestry but am coming up blank!

Thanks,
Kat
