Mayo / Belmullet Board of Guardians - Patrick Henry and Henry REILLY
« on: Monday 06 May 19 08:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for information on the Belmullet Board of Guardians and my GGF Patrick Henry Reilly, b abt 1834-40 d1908 Belmullet, who was Chairman in 1864 and his father Henry Reilly who was also involved at that time.

I have the obituary for Patrick Henry who died 3 May 1908 Belmullet.  The obituary describes his father as the late Henry Reilly.  I have also found various newspaper articles dated 1864 where there was an incident of the Board of Guardian books being fiddled.  One of the articles gives a who's who of the Reilly family, cousins and uncles, who were involved in the Board of Guardians at that time. It mentions Chairman Patrick Henry and his father Henry.

Am I allowed to upload the newspaper clippings?

That is as far back as I have been able to get, however, in Patrick Henry's obituary it also say's that he was educated by Anthony Corcoran who was the Priest at Killala. I think he died abt 1852?

I can't find any info on Anthony Corcoran apart from his name being mentioned in church articles.  I have deduced, rightly or wrongly, that Henry's wife's maiden name would have been Corcoran so it would be good to try and find something on that family.  Patrick Henry's wife's name is Maria Gallagher and she was born abt 1840.

Thanks
Carole

Cavan / O'REILLY CAVAN
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 11:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi

My Ancestry DNA highlighted my birth father's family, I was adopted out as a baby.  It also showed that I am more Irish than I am English  ;D ;D

I am discovering that it can be quite hard researching Irish ancestors so I am hoping that someone can help me open up his family and maybe go back further.

My GT Grandfather was Edward O'Reilly abt 1855 Cavan and his wife Margaret abt 1857 Leitrim - sorry no surname. I have nothing apart from the 2 documents below:

Edward was a farmer according to the 1901 and 1911 census:

1901 a farmer living  at 8 FAHANGRAVE, ARVAH, CAVAN with wife Margaret and 4 children, neice Maggie Curran 24 Leitrim, 3 visitors and 4 servants.

1911 a farmer living with his wife, 4 children, 4 servants and 2 borders at Rahaghan Ave Cavan.

Kate O'Reilly  is my grandmother and she married George McKeon.  Her part of the tree is pretty much resolved.  Kate and George moved to Enfield and the family are picked up on the 1939 Register.

Thank you
Carole :D

Norfolk / Mr & Mrs LLOYD, Lady PRICILLA and Lady DEBORAH, Blo Norton Hall, Diss
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I found this intriguing little sketch book about Mr&Mrs Lloyd, Lady Pricilla and Lady Deborah's progression from Blo Norton Hall to Cromer, June 22nd 1868.  Not sure that they are ladies or if it is just the polite way of addressing them and that maybe they worked at Blo Norton Hall rather than owning it.  The book is very hard to read.  There are little sketches that shows them at Norwich Railway Station and also catching the stage coach along with their adventures at Cromer.  They are well dressed and have a lot of luggage so I hazzard a guess they aren't poor servants.

I guess the girls are 18 or over going by the sketches although in some one of the girls looks younger and has her head stuck thru the bars of a gate  :o  Pricilla is also spelt Priscilla throughout the book.  Sorry but that is all the information that I have.

I am hoping that someone would be able to do a look up for me on the Lloyds.

Armed Forces / NAPOLEONIC WAR & WATERLOO SOLIDIER
« on: Monday 10 August 15 14:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have just found out that my 4xgt grandfather was a foot solider about the time of the Nepoleonic War and the Battle of Waterloo and I was wondering if anyone could give me more information.

The family name is Henley although on different records they have been documented as Henley/Henly/Hindley.  They are from Holborn.

The only record I have reference to is the Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service, 1756-1900, which shows on the 18 May 1814 Joseph Henly, 46, b Holborn London, formerly a Smith, enlisted in the 3rd Foot, 2nd Batt.  He apparently transferred from the 1st Batt.

If he enlisted in the 3rd Foot, 2nd Batt in 1814 does that mean that he was enlisted in the 1st Batt prior to this and was he involved in the Nepoleonic War and what was he doing?  Will there be discharge papers?  Sorry so many questions  ???

Thanks
Carole

Lanarkshire / MACKAY, GLASGOW
« on: Tuesday 16 June 15 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Just started this side of the family and finding it really difficult with no  access to Scottish records.
This is all I have so would be very grateful for any help or info.

Andrew R B Mackay b abt 1920s Glasgow??. Built ships in Glasgow.
married 1944 Thanet
Clara Maye Jenkins  b abt 1920s I've no further info on her or her family or where she was born!

They had 3 children who were all put into care at an early age:

(*) b 1945 Thanet. Worked at the RIV as a nurse.  Married (*) and adopted 2 boys before emigrating to Australia in late 70s.

Andrew Forrest Begg Mackay  b 17 June 1947 Glasgow - d 1999 Carlisle

(*) b abt 1949 Glasgow.  Joined the army. It'ss thought he went to Germany?

The family moved to the Gables, Glasgow between 1945-47

I am dangerously assuming that Andrew RB Mackay was born in Glasgow and therefore had family there and that is why he and his family moved back up there.

Not a lot to go on I'm afraid!!

Thanks
Carole

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / JAMES HENLEY 1793 HOLBORN
« on: Monday 06 April 15 09:09 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have come to the end of the road with my Henley family and wonder if anyone can help me get back further than 1793?

Boot maker James HENLEY born 1793/4 Holborn married twice - m 5 Aug 1816 to Anne STRONG b1797-1854 and then on 30 Apr 1857 Islington married spinster Mary Ann MARSHALL b1810.

On the 1857 marriage banns for James and Mary Ann his father is given as Joseph HENLEY a whitesmith.  That is all I have been able to find for his father. Source Citation London Metropolitan Archives, All Saints, Battle Bridge, Register of marriages, P83/ALL1, Item 029

Interestingly, on the 1861 census James is the Governor Islington Reformatory, 16 Bryan Street, Islington. He is living with 2nd wife Mary Ann, son John 1834 shoemaker, and granddaughter Mary Ann Frazer 1856. 32 Reformatory boys aged 9-16. 10 shoemakers, 6 tailors, 14 wood choppers, i brush maker and 1?  I haven't been able to find out any other info on the reformatory.

Armed Forces / ROYAL BERKSHIRE REG - WEST INDIES
« on: Monday 09 February 15 16:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

My Great grandfather Allen Serjeant b1873 Harlton was in the in the Royal Berkshires, his number was 3986 between 2 Oct 1893 and the 1 Oct 1902.  On his papers for question 10 where it asks if they now belong to HM Army etc Allen answers, Yes, 3rd Batt Royal Fusiliers.  It looks like he was already in the army before 1893 although I have found any army papers for him?

I would love to learn more about where Allen went and what he did when he was away - in particular the West Indies although I would love to know about Halifax and what he did in the Boar War too.

The only info I have on his papers are the dates:

HOME                   02.10.93  -  13.11.95  =  2 YRS     43 DAYS
HALIFAX NS         14.11.95  -  23.10.95  =  1 YR     344 DAYS
WEST INDIES       24.10.95  -  18.11.98  =  1 YR       26 DAYS
HOME                   19.11.98  -  30.12.98  =                42 DAYS
SOUTH AFRICA     31.12.98  -  12.12.02  =  3 YRS       4 DAYS
HOME                   13.02.02  -  01.10.05  =  3 YRS   231 DAYS

Can anyone help me with some info.

Thanks
Carole

Suffolk Lookup Requests / GEORGE BOREHAM b1790 BOXTED MARRIAGE
« on: Tuesday 13 January 15 11:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am looking for an elusive marriage for George BOREHAM 1790 Boxted-1868 Hartest and Susan ? b1794 Sudbury.

George's parents are William BOREHAM 1745-1791 Boxted and Ann COE 1752 Hartest-1789.

From the 1841 census George Winn Boreham 1819 appears to be the eldest son og George and Susan although maybe she others that had left home by the 1841 census.  Other children are James 1823, Sara 1827, Eliza 1831 Edmund 1840.  The family didn't move from Hartest and George was a Harness maker.

I am also missing the 1851 census.

Sussex / JANE GANDER or BENNETT 1777
« on: Sunday 08 June 14 14:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I posted here abt 18 months ago trying to find bapt records and parents for my 4xgt grandmother Jane GANDER and I am no further forward so I thought I would try again  :D

What I do know is that she married Michael HARMES in July 1812 BOLNEY.  There is a name of Elias HARMER (sic) - not sure who this is?  They had 2 children Michael bapt Nov 1812 Bolney - so she was already pregnant with him when she married.  Then there is Edward bapt July 1816.

In 1841 Jane is living in Hammersmith and she later goes and lives with son Edward and his family who also live in Hammersmith until she dies Jan qtr 1863 CUCKFIELD.  The census put Jane down as being born 1777 HURSTPIERPOINT.

I have all the census, death and marriage records, which unfortunately don't give any parent's names.

What I was wondering was if I could get a look up to see if Jane was down as a spinster or widow on her marriage to Michael HARMES?  Given her age of 35 it is possible that she had been married before?

I have looked on the internet/ancestry and found a marriage for Jane BENNETT and Thomas GANDER 1803 Keymer.  There is a Baptism for Thomas GANDER 1777 Clayton but again there is nothing for
Jane BENNETT -  I was hoping to miraculously find a bapt for 1777 Hurstpierpoint  ;D but not  againso I am stumped again ???

Also there aren't any death records for Thomas GANDER, however, there is an 1841 census for Keymer where he is an ag lab - so if that is him then he is still allive and she was a pregnant bigamist!  :D
  HO107/1111 Book: 11/Folio: 42 Page: 17

I have also been in touch with the Gander One Name Study and unfortunately this is one of the outstanding marriages that they can't get any further on.......!

Thanks
Carole
