World War Two / Stalag Luft 6 POW - How can I get more information?!
« on: Sunday 15 October 17 20:26 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have received the RAF records of my great Uncle, Ivor Edwards (dob: 1921) who was a Leading Aircraftman in the 2nd WW. I had already found out (from a kind soul on here) that he had been in Stalag Luft 6 at some point and now I possibly have an idea of when if I am reading the rather difficult to read writing. It looks like he was:

Missing 1943
In Stalag Luft 6 - 29th November 1943
Returned to UK - 9th May 1945

Now from what I can see the camp closed to airforce men (and others) in 1944 and they were made to march across the country (one of the Long Marches) until April 1945. Is there any way I could ever possibly find out whether he was someone who would have been in the marches? Or what else he may have been up to?

To be honest - any deciphering of the writing on the attached would be good. I can't work out what the Squadron number is on the page either, it's just above where it looks like it says 'Missing' 'POW' etc.

Any help very gratefully received. Oh and his service number was: 1413915

Many thanks

Armed Forces / Look up request
« on: Friday 01 September 17 15:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I haven't done any family historying for ages as I am meant to be studying when ever I sit at the computer but the lure of searching has called me back!

I am about to fill in the Request for Service Records for my Grandfather and Great Uncle and was wondering whether anyone had any access to service numbers? I don't know if it's something that can be looked up. I have my great uncle's service number as it's on a medal box but have no idea for my grandfather. His details are:

Name: Ronald Squire Edwards
DOB: 25th May 1919 - Flintshire
Served in the Royal Engineers initially based in Dover but must have been in the Faroe Islands at one point as his first son has Sverri as his middle name and I think someone said it came from the Faroe Islands (am doubting this as I type it...he does definitely have that as his middle name though!) Think he just served for the war, he was a carpenter by trade.
Died 11th October 1974 aged 55 of heart failure despite having always been a very fit and active man. Sadly I never got to meet my Grandfathers on either side of the family.

Any help very gratefully received,
Frodo

Hi,

I have been tring to work out what the highlighted Mill name is on this 1891 census. Jane Dutton (highlighted) is my great great grandmother and Arthur R Dutton (highlighted) is her son. It looks like she was a Twine Baller in a Mill in Bradford in 1891 like the person listed abover her but I can't for the life of me work out the name. They were living on Gibbon Street in Bradford at the time but I can't find a mill listed there. It looks like Hasel or Flasel Mill but that can't be right! Any help gratefully received!

Many thanks

Lancashire / Deborah Smith HOLCROFT
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 12:48 GMT (UK)  »
This is probably not going to make an awful lot of sense as I am getting very confused with names! I have an ancestor called Deborah SMITH who died a spinster in 1825 leaving all her things to her niece Margaret CULCHETH who is living with her in Parkstone Poole Dorset.

Whilst trying to unpick who Margaret is (she appears to have an illegitimate daughter when she's 35 as there's 2 Margaret CULCHETHs living together in 1841....though that is a bit of a guess) I have started being taken up to Liverpool area. Having thought I must have the wrong Culcheths I have just come across Deborah Smith HOLCROFT who is daughter of Richard HOLCROFT and Ann CULCHETH!

It's making my brain ache! Richard and Ann got married in 1810 the year before little Deborah Smith turned up. I can't help but think there must be a link but I'm failing to find one.

If anyone out there recognises these names and is able to give me any thoughts I will be eternally grateful!

Thanks

Frodo

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Where there's a Will......there's confusion!
« on: Saturday 02 February 13 07:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I posted a couple of days ago with a name I couldn't decipher in the Will of Deborah SMITH. It was decided the name was Margaret CULCHETH, see link:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=633794.0

The Will mentioned frequently Deborah's brother the Rev Thomas Smith and we now have his Will which is far longer and mentions various relatives. A particularly confusing one is his sister Elizabeth's surname as it says one name then 'alias ??????'. It's the same when he mentions Elizabeth's daughter Margaret. Both surnames given look like they begin with a C but neither of them look like Culcheth. Any thoughts anyone?!

Thanks

Dorset / SMITHs (yes, I'm still trying to find stuff!!!!)

Hi,

Some time ago my Dad and I managed to get our Smith ancestors back as far as a Nathaniel SMITH marrying a Margaret VINEY in Thorncombe in 1732. They then moved to Nathaniel's home turf of Newton Peverel in the parish of Sturminster Marshall where they went on to have lots of kids. Nathaniel then sadly died in 1748 leaving a will that contains rather a lot of property and wealth and executors that showed he was well connected. His wife was one of the executors but she died a year later before anything was done about the will.

The kids were left in the care of their maternal uncle and aunt John and Betty Tucker (she was Margaret's sister). Then they disappear.

However, thanks to Dad's persistence we do now possibly have a couple of them. Deborah SMITH who was born in 1748 died in Parkstone, Poole in 1825 aged 78 (ties in with where all our family are) a spinster. she talks in her will about money left by her brother from his will and his name was Rev. Thomas SMITH rector of Hutton Axbridge. He also died in Parkstone in 1820 and the age etc all ties in correctly with the kids of Nathaniel.

Deborah gets buried back in Sturminster Marshall rather interestingly.

In her will she is leaving everything to her niece Margaret CULCHETH and this is where I am hoping we can discover something. Margaret is also a spinster so one of Deborah's sisters must have married a CULCHETH probably at some point in the 1750/60s.

I'm not quite sure what I'm asking for (not very helpful of me!) except if any of these names tie in with anyone elses' families or if anyone has any other ideas of where I can find info or go next that would be fab!

Many thanks and sorry for the long story,

Frodo

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What's the name?!
« on: Thursday 31 January 13 11:10 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have just downloaded another family will from the good old PCC but I can't work out a surname mentioned in it! The will is for Deborah smith and she mentions her brother the late Rev. Thomas Smith and his will and then leaves everything to her niece Margaret ???????. This is where I can't figure out the surname! I have copied a little section of the will where Margaret's name appears twice. If anyone can give me any thoughts about the name this would be very helpful as it might help us uncover a bit more of the Smiths!

many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What did Joseph Dutton do?!
« on: Monday 19 November 12 23:21 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

I have this marriage certificate for William Dutton and Jane Haddock and I can't for the life of me make out what the occupation is of Joseph Dutton (William's father)....I started a post somewhere else on here before I was able to scan in this image so someone has suggested an occupation based on a potential census search result, it would be interesting to see if that matches what anyone here might decipher the word to be...if you see what I mean!

Any thoughts???

Cheshire / Having a momentary family search mental blank for where to look next...help!
« on: Wednesday 14 November 12 21:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have just had my greatx3 grandfather and grandmother's wedding certificate through in the post and, as I had hoped, it has my grtx3 grandfather's name on it. However...I now seem to be stuck for how to find his mother and more details about him. This is what I have so far:

William DUTTON born 1849/50 in Chester, Cheshire (according to 1881 census)

Father: Joseph DUTTON - cannot read what his occupation was (this is from the marriage cert)

1873 married Jane HADDOCK - William is a letter carrier and was living at 114 Long Street Manchester and Jane was also at 114 Long Street Manchester (have looked at the 1871 census and Jane is there with her parents but no sign of William there or in neighbouring properties - on ancestry it is named as London Road on the transcript but on the original it is Long Road)

Had 4 children; Frances Elizabeth (1875 Manchester), William Joseph (1876 Manchester), Sarah Jane (1879 Chester) and Arthur Richard (1885 Chester)

When in Chester he was living at 25 Garden Lane.

Died June 1885 - from a newspaper of the time I found:

"Mr William Dutton, a postman who had been in the employ of the post-office a number of years, and recently travelled the Handbridge round, died at the beginning of the week after a short illness. His remains were interred at the Cemetery on Friday morning, being followed to the grave by the whole of the postmen in the city and district in their uniform."

I would love to be able to find out more about William, who his parents were etc but seem to be having a bit of a blank about where to look next so any thoughts very gratefully recieved!

Thank you for reading

Frodo
