Derry (Londonderry) / STEELE of Magherafelt
« on: Sunday 16 October 11 09:48 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor named Robert Steele, who was born on the 21st of April 1808. 9 of his 10 children migrated to New Zealand, the eldest of which was named Samuel Steele (1838-1920). I know that Robert had a brother named Samuel Br... (unknown name) Steele who died in 1845. I suspect that Robert and Samuel's father may have been named Samuel, but I cannot confirm this.
Robert Steele married Elizabeth Brown before 1838, he died in Magherafelt. Robert owned property in Dunamoney according to Griffiths Valuation.
Robert's siblings:
Samuel Br... (d. 1845)
James (d. 1866)
Ellen (d. 1844)
presumably Margaret (d. 1858)

I would like to find out who Robert's parents were, and more about his wife. If you need the names of his children, I have them.
Thanks.

Midlothian / Elizabeth FORREST
« on: Friday 01 July 11 02:21 BST (UK)  »
This woman married John Lindsay in Duddington, on June 28 1829. She had 3 children with him, namely James, William and Catherine, all Forrest Lindsay.
At the 1841 census, however, John was remarried to an Ann nee Allan, and had a son, William. This makes me think Elizabeth and her son William had died. Strangely, James was not in the household either. Catherine however was, and she was gone by 1851, aged 16.

Is there anyone who can help me find more about Elizabeth Forrest? Thanks.

Scotland / William MITCHELL, unknown county
« on: Thursday 30 June 11 06:35 BST (UK)  »
I am a descendant of William Mitchell, who arrived in NZ aboard the Stately with his parents on the 5th of February 1854. I am not even sure which country he is from, but I'm sure it is Scotland.

William was born c. 1822. He married a woman he met aboard the Stately, whom I have extensive information about. She was Catherine Forrest Lindsay, and may have returned to Scotland after her daughter's marriage, in which case she died in 1904 in Hawick, Roxburghshire, a place with no connection to the Lindsays.

William had at least 2 daughters, I don't know of any sons. The first daughter died aged 4. I am descended from the second.

Is there any way to find out about William Mitchell?

Thanks

Wicklow / Thomas B STRINGER m. Christina S MANLEY
« on: Wednesday 29 June 11 11:46 BST (UK)  »
This couple were Protestant, and they married May 17, 1852. They were born in 1824 and 1826, respectively, and Christina's parents were George Manley and Jane Tuke.
On the other hand, I know nothing about Thomas besides his birth year, and the fact he died at sea en route to New Zealand to live with his son William. This happened Dec 23, 1880.

The children of this couple were William (1853), George (1856), Mary Jane (1860) and Alice (1862).

I would like to know more about Thomas, especially his middle name. Knowing Christina's might help too.

Thanks.

Fife / David DONALD Dunfermline weaver
« on: Wednesday 29 June 11 11:36 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know anything about this family:

David Donald, born c. 1801 based on census data, married Margaret McGregor, born c. 1796 by the same reckoning. They married in Dunfermline on Jun 8 1823, and had these children:

David, Jr. (Apr 7 1824)
Peter (Dec 10 1825)
Robert (Jun 28 1828)
James William (Mar 21 1830)

David Jr. is my 4g-grandfather. He was a damask weaver, and according to census records his father was too. Looking in the Dunfermline weavers page on fifefhs, I can see a few Donalds of David Sr's parent's generation. David Sr. had an apprentice, John Dickson, in 1841.

Banffshire / Helen DUFF William CUMMING
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 23:52 BST (UK)  »
I am descended from their daughter Margaret (b. 1769). They married in 1766, in Kirkmichael.
I would like to find out more about this couple, especially Helen, so I might find a connection to a Duff genealogy database.
They had at least another daughter, Jean (b. 1772).

Thanks

Canada Lookup Request / James William and Michael DELANEY
« on: Wednesday 08 June 11 05:34 BST (UK)  »
My great-great-uncles went to Canada after 1920. Back in the 50s, my grandfather was going to go to Canada to work in the forestry with his uncles and cousins. I don't know what province, though.
If its possible, I'd like to know where they went in Canada. I have no port of entry records, and I don't know anything about my family in Canada.

If the info is out there to be found, great. Thanks for any help

England / David and Ann BROWN, son Robert
« on: Tuesday 07 June 11 05:18 BST (UK)  »
This might be an impossible task, but I'd like to find out where and when David and Ann got married. A maiden name would help, but I don't have it.
All I know is to do with their son Robert. He was baptized in Besthorpe, Norfolk, on March 29 1807, to David and Ann. No other children of theirs were on the register.
This does not surprise me, because Robert was in Somerset, 300 miles away, by 1833, when he got married to Mary Jennings in Wiveliscombe. I have no proof that his parents came, but I'm sure they did.
Robert was recorded as being a groom at one point, although I'm not sure when. Occupation, not marriage.

Any help/pointers would be appreciated. Thanks
