Census and Resource Discussion / seaching the 1881 Census - Help!
« on: Sunday 05 June 05 15:58 BST (UK)  »
I have got a copy of the 1881 census on cd, I have not used it for some while and have had a look around it this afternoon, I was under the impression that you could seach by address, or road. I can't seem to work out how to do this, although there does seem to be a reference to it in the help index, I just can't work it out.
I would like to look up a particular road in Whitby can anyone give me a shove in the right direction ??
Thanks

Europe / GERMANY: Allhusen - North East of England
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 18:53 BST (UK)  »
Berlin Bob has pointed me in this direction, to try and seek some help with my German ancestors!

I have a lady in my tree called Augusta Allhusen.
On the 30th of August 1875 the 18 year old Augusta married my most whacky named ancester New Year Rickaby (guess when New Year was born ???)
at the time of the marriage the father listed was Jacob Allhusen a carpenter.

I have them on the 1881 census where Augusta says she was born in Germany.

That is it, I can't find Jacob anywhere, I can't find his death on the free BDM, although I now appreciate that he may well have changed his name to an English version of it.

Where can I go from here ??

Incidentally I found that New Year died aged 40 and Augusta remarried a chap called Chinnock.

I would love to be able to find out some more about the German connection!

Thanks
Liz

England / Immigration from Germany
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 00:05 BST (UK)  »
Would there be any records covering the immigration of labourers from Germany to the North East around 1840 ?

I have a lady called Augusta Allhusen in my tree who says she was born in Germany, as does her father Jacob. I am at a loss to find any further info on them.

Any ideas where I could start my research ?
Thanks

Family History Beginners Board / Irish research help please
« on: Saturday 23 April 05 00:58 BST (UK)  »
I have got an Irish connection on my tree, and until now I have not really done too much about it.

I was able to order some photocopies of marriage and birth entries but it was only because I had all the info in a bible.

I am used to searching the UK Indexes at my locals history centre, but where could I go to search the Irish ones??
Are there any online sites?

Does Ancestory cover any of this ?

Thanks for any help

Family History Beginners Board / Help with a marriage certificate Please
« on: Thursday 21 April 05 14:47 BST (UK)  »
I have been 'doing ' my history for some while now, but have just taken it up after a break of a couple of years.
I have been rereading some of the certificates and I have been surprised to see something on a certificate that I had not noticed before.

The certificate is the marriage of my nan and grandad in 1937 in Watford.
The marriage certificate is pretty standard, but I have only just noticed that my nans name is recorded like this ;- Elizabeth Jospehine DOONEY otherwise DEMPSY. It is signed EJ DOONEY. Now the problem is that her maiden name was DEMPSY, and I really can't believe that I had not noticed the Dooney bit before.

Her status is described as spinster, her fathers details are there as DEMPSY.

At the time of her marriage she had one son, which is never talked about, although it is generally accepted that he was not my grandads son, nothing was ever said about his true biological father.

My nan was a staunch Catholic and it had always made me wonder why a pair of catholics had chosen to get married in the register office.

So what I want to know is under what circumstances are the names recorded like this ?? Could she have been divorced or widowed ?? I thought that the widow bit would have been recorded as her status, and I thought that divorce was still fairly rare in those days, especially in Ireland which is where she came from before she got married.

Any help would be gratefully received !
