Australia Lookups completed / Supposedly Ruth married Major Colless-no record
« on: Thursday 05 December 13 07:23 GMT (UK)  »
Background to this post  dated 1 Feb 2012.

I will try to list things on a time line
1848 Major W Colless born
1886 '                '      marries his cousin Mary Colless
1897          "              Dies  at Normanton Qld of Dengue fever

Ruth Herald Stowe marries Henry Welldreck 1876 but leaves Henry in 1880. This was noted in a court appearence when Henry took Ruth to Court after Ruth had taken Henry to Court.{No bearing on this}

Birth certificate 1884/33286 details
28 October 1884  at Lady Bowen Hospital Ann St Brisbane a son Major Colless Bowen.
Father Henry Welldreck, labourer 37 years born in Germany Married 3 October 1876 Singleton NSW. Living children-Clarence 7, Harold Henry 6 Walter James 4, Dead one female
Mother Ruth Herrald formally Stowe 27 years born at sea
Father not present

The family lived in Patrick Plains This birth in Qld.
Patrick Plains is not that far from Come by Chance where Major William Colless was born and he does not get married until 1886. On hearsay it states he sold his share of CBC to his brother and went to Normanton and purchased Inverleigh, came back to NSW after nearly 2 years and married Mary in 1886. Most Colless family trees have Major Bowen Colless as the son of Major.
I only noticed this "slip" when I was double checking the tree. He is my husband's grandfather.
Will appreciate any help Thank you

Is DNA the way to prove this

I need help in finding out about my grandfather who said that he was born in Lancaster in 1882.On his wedding certificate it states that his father was Anthony Berry, timber merchant deceased and Alice  Rothwell deceased. That was in 2 June 1917 in Sydney Australia. Back in August 2012 rootschats helped locate his soon to be wife's  journey to Sydney. In Australia he joined the army in 1917 and went to France returning in 1919.
Verbal family history says he followed Peggy out here as he was an old friend??She lived in Edinburgh so I don't get that one, also he only had enough money to get to Perth and found his way to Sydney. On his army papers he said he was in the Milltia for 2 1/2 years and brought out. He also stated he was apprenticed to Mr Pye from Blackburn for 5 years. Other information is about his height etc. and his tattoos [2]. Nobody knows anything and I wonder if any of his history prior to 1917 is true Thank you for reading this and I hope you can help
I have looked up BMD Lancashire and could not find him or his parents.

Friday 19 April this year, I asked questions about South Australian Marriage Index for the marriage of William THOMAS and Mary JENKINS on 15 August 1865  at the Baptist Chapel Flinders St Adelaide.
Groom-William THOMAS aged 25 and a mason from Kapunda and his fathers name is Jenkin THOMAS and Mary JENKINS aged 24  also from Kapunda and whose father is listed as David JENKINS decd.
One of the witnesses is David WILLIAMS also a mason
Kapunda had a large copper mine and the SA government was empowered to get people to come and work in the mine Most of these people travelled as a group "40 miners" but with no names .
This went on for about 4 years and then SA ran out of money. More people looking for work in the mines came steerage and again no names
Did Thomas and Mary stay in SA, have children? Need help with this. When the mine petered out some went to Victoria looking for gold
I have been searching for these two or their parents and have come up empty handed and so would really like some help Thank you Gmar

One Name Studies: A to G / Burt of Dunfermline Scotland
« on: Tuesday 04 June 13 12:32 BST (UK)  »
We are interested in the Burt family of Scotland mainly based in Dunfermline. We have gone back to about 1590 with the birth of Henrie Burt and his marriage to Isabell Browne.
We then continue to the nineteenth century when the big exodus begins. The United States was the number one choice for lots of the Burt Family. There is a great conclave in Utah, Salt Lake City which suits the Burts and their love of Family History. This is very well covered by the Mormans and LDS, and the Burts are in many other States.
Some Burts travelled to New Zealand and we have contact there as well. Some came to Australia. My line came here but there are other Burt families here and some of our family went to Perth in Western Australia and some others went to South Africa.
There are probably a lot more Burts. We have just listed the ones we know at this time.

Back in the early 1960's we were given a framed history of the Burts which was done by Alexander MacDonald Burt (Aust) and Mrs Margaret Tensmeyer Burt ( USA), in which is listed "some of our service".
There are two sections Civil and Military under the heading "Peace hath her victories not less renowned than war". There is a chief of police, a right honorable, a detective inspectior attached to the Royal Household, A poet and songwriter,Handloom weaver, inventor, translater to BBC and inventor of emergency launcher, Professor of english.
On the Military side  we have a VC, a bugler, Guard at St Helena over Napoleon,,DCM and MM, and service in most fields of war.
Their is a branch of the family in England but I know nothing about them.
Please PM me for further information or if there is someone who should be with our family
