Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Smallpox in the New Forest, c1871
« on: Thursday 06 January 05 22:14 GMT (UK)  »
I recently obtained the death certificate of Fred Hayter, the brother of my GGGG grandfather. He died in Totton, Eling in 1871 at age 16 and the cause of death is VARIOLA ASTHEMA, which I assume is a respiratory complication of smallpox (Variola).

I was wondering if Fred's illness was part of a greater outbreak of smallpox in the area and whether anyone has any information on this.

Thanks

Wiltshire / FIELDER of Wellow
« on: Tuesday 30 November 04 09:19 GMT (UK)  »
my GGG grandmother was Caroline Pollard, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Pollard and John Fielder. She was born in Totton, Hants in 1823
Her father was John Fielder, Shoemaker, who I think was born in West Wellow about 1794. Is anyone else researching this family?

Devon / Cudmore Family of Paignton
« on: Wednesday 10 November 04 21:23 GMT (UK)  »
Samuel Cudmore married Ann Webber in 1838 and they lived in Paignton. I think Sam might have been born in Okehampton in 1816 (based on the best IGI match, with the knowledge from his marriage certificate that his father was named John).

I have a match for Sam in the 1841 census where his age is 25, which fits. I wonder if anyone could check the 1851 census for me - a match could prove his age and place of birth. Is anyone else researching this family?

Cheers,
Jason

Wexford / John CONDON, 1797 Vinegar Hill
« on: Sunday 29 August 04 22:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for information on the roots of John Condon born about 1797 who settled in South Wales, marrying Esther from Margam, Glamorgan. He worked in a copper works and had at least 3 children Catherine, Eliza and Sarah. Sarah is my GGG grandmother. Love to swap info with anyone with same interests.

Devon / HURSON of Exeter
« on: Wednesday 25 August 04 09:56 BST (UK)  »
Looking for info on the Exeter Hursons, including any links back to the Drewsteignton Hursons.

My GGG grandfather was John Hurson, born Exeter c1840. He married Martha Ann Cudmore 11/11/1860 where his father is recorded as James Hurson, a Labourer.

I have a birth certificate which I think might be the wrong one - but it was the only suitable GRO index match:

Birth in St. Thomas, Devon
16dec1838 / John / Boy / / Mary Hurson / / Mary Hurson, Mother / 27dec1838

My reasoning is that if John was illegitimate and his mother was Hurson it seems unlikely his natural father or stepfather (as per marriage cert) would also be Hurson, given that there were not that many Hursons about. I guess they might be related, or a mistake was made in the record, but the simplest explanation seems to be the wrong certificate.

Any info gratefully received!
Cheers

Shropshire / Edward HOTCHKISS/Elizabeth BODEN, Wentnor/Chirbury, Late 1700s
« on: Wednesday 25 August 04 09:46 BST (UK)  »
I think that Edward Hotchkiss who married Elizabeth Boden in Chirbury in 1762 (IGI) might be the same who is buried in Acton Scott churchyard.
His headstone records him dying Jan 3 1810 aged 84 and Elizabeth as dying 12 dec 1816 age 78. The stone records him as a Blacksmith.

On the IGI the following children are listed; Ann (1763) Edward (1764) Thomas Boden (1767) Susannah (1770) Richard (1773 died 1774) Mary (1775) John (1778) Betty (1780) Hannah (1784). All except Hannah were baptised in Wentnor, Hannah was baptised in Acton Scott.

I think that John became the Blacksmith of Acton Scott after his father and he is also buried at Acton Scott (died 7 Sep 1846 age 67 years). John is my GGGG grandfather

If this rings a bell with anyone or you have any information that might back up or shatter my theory please let me know! Also have various info on the Hotchkiss family of Acton Scott to share if anyone is interested.

Cheers,
Jason

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Southampton Orphanages - Tremona Court
« on: Monday 16 August 04 09:03 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any information on the orphanages in Southampton circa 1900? I believe that both my great grandparents were in orphanages as children.

I heard from my grandmother that her father was in the 'Hampshire seamans orphanage' near Redbridge in Southampton following the death of his mother in 1901. I believe this might have been Tremona Court on Tremona Road near the present site of the hospital. Tremona court no longer exists, and I only know of its existence from a mention on the hospital website.

I just wondered if anybody might have any information on Tremona court or other orphanages of Southampton.

Thanks
Jason

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Brading IOW, Parish Records & MAJOR family
« on: Sunday 15 August 04 21:46 BST (UK)  »
I have the following information from bishops transcripts of the Brading records, and wondered if anybody might be in possession of a transcription of the records themselves, or have more information about the following family....

Baptisms
8 oct 1780    Hannah MAJOR d. of James & Mary
1783             James MAJOR s. of James & Mary
11 jul 1790    Jeremiah MAJOR s. of James & Mary

I know there are gaps in the transcripts so there are probably other children too. Any other info from the original records would be much appreciated
Cheers, Jason

Shropshire / HOTCHKISS on Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury
« on: Tuesday 13 July 04 10:26 BST (UK)  »
William Hotchkiss (Blacksmith) married Mary Ann Hotchkiss 23feb1841, fathers were John Hotchkiss (Blacksmith) and Richard Hotchkiss (Farmer) respectively. The happy couple were both were residents of Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury

John Hotchkiss's family (including William) were living in Acton Scott in 1851 where John's widow Mary continued the Blacksmith business with son Joseph, and I can track the family after this and provide info for anyone interested

However, does anyone have any matches for this family prior to 1851? A matches from parish records or the 1841 census would be great (I don't think they were in Acton Scott by then)

Note that John's wife Mary was born in Culmington about 1781

Thanks
Jason
