Angus (Forfarshire) / Poor Records in Forfar
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 04:50 BST (UK)  »
Have ancestor who died in 1858 in Forfar, listed as a widowed pauper and died in poorhouse. I have found the poor records in Ayrshire incrediably helpful in my search... they have a searchable database that then aims you to a film. Could someone steer me to how to access them in Angus, I have been unable to figure out where to search. Thank You!

Scotland / ms verses nee
« on: Monday 23 May 11 00:44 BST (UK)  »
On microfilm documents I find ms, signifying (I believe) maiden name... but on Rootchat entries I find the term nee used for the same meaning... the wiki says nee means "born as." Could someone help me understand exactly what ms and nee stand for in Scotland and how I would correctly use each? How would you say ms?

May be a dumb question - but both are new to me. Thank you.

I have a year book made by the students of Adams Elementary School in 1936. the year the school was built. The students interviewed several people about the school... these two were father and son architects and if I were family, I would want a copy... it is delightful.

Any relatives out there that want a copy?

Ayrshire / County Prison of Ayr Records
« on: Monday 16 May 11 18:27 BST (UK)  »
My relative Elizabeth (Cowell) Lamont appears on the 1871 census as a prisoner at county Prison of Ayr. Her children are found in the Cunningham Poor House. Her husband, John Lamont, was drowned on 2 October 1860 off the the Ardrossan coast when a fishing boat sank, leaving Elizabeth pregnant and with 6 other children.

My question - is there any way to find records of how and why she ended up in prison? Are there prison or poor house records? How would I find them? I feel so attached to her - I can't seem to be satisfied without knowing.

Also, is there a way in Ayrshire to access old newspapers... I had found a microfilmed record where the Irvine community had raised funds to help support the families of the lost fisherman (rah), but I am sure the sinking of a fishing boat would make its way to the paper.

My first posting after finding your site - thank you!
