Buckinghamshire / Interesting tales from Buckingham and nearby villages
« on: Thursday 28 July 22 22:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm currently writing a book on the history of Buckingham and surrounding villages.

I wondered if anyone here had some interesting stories they've uncovered through researching their or someone else's family tree that they'd be interested in sharing?

I know it's a bit of a long shot - but would love to hear anything you've uncovered related to ancestors in the area, or its history more generally!

Technical Help / Compressing images
« on: Wednesday 26 March 14 18:46 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I thought it might help some Rootschatters.

Rootschat's file limit sometimes makes it difficult to upload images. However, in the latest issue of WebUser magazine, they reccomend the software JPGmini. It claims to reduce the file size of Jpeg images without compromising image quality. This should help when an image is too big to upload but the quality is important.

You can download it from this link: It will download a Zip folder which you then need to open and double click on the 'setup file'.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Old will
« on: Sunday 23 February 14 17:23 GMT (UK)  »

After the amazing response I had last time, please can anybody help me to transcribe this will? I've had a look but I could only make out the odd word. Any help would be massively appreciated as both me and a relative are interested to learn the contents of it.

- The file is too large to upload so if anybody can help, please could they PM me

I have these books and have made indexes for them. Whilst I cannot send pages of the book for copyright reasons, I would be happy to look up any names or places in Oxford on the indexes.

I hope I've posted this in the correct area.
Last night I went through some of my surname interests and deleted a few which were tenuously related. I then added 6 or 7 new ones from a new area of the family tree I've been researching. However, these didn't appear on my list.

I've left it until this evening and they still haven't been added. Surnames added include Wareham in Oxfordshire and Webb In Glympton, Oxfordshire. Do they take a while to be published or is there currently a problem with the surname interests system?

Technical Help / Video editing - Corel mainly
« on: Friday 03 January 14 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
I just wondered if anyone had any experience with video editing software. I've just downloaded the free trial for Corel VideoStudio Pro X6 and find it quite easy to use but need to do a bit more testing before buying. I'm also going to consider Cyberlink and possibly MAGIX.

Does anybody have any experience on using any of these, particularly using AVCHD clips from a camcorder?

Does anybody have any idea where this house could be? It's in a family collection with some other photographs from the Cottisford/Hethe area in Oxfordshire but I've driven around this area and not been able to find it.

If anybody has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.

Oxfordshire / Bowling Records
« on: Thursday 12 December 13 16:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have a picture of an ancestor, John Hewer, who is wearing a uniform with an Oxford County Bowls Association badge. This was formed in 1907 and considering John Hewer was b1845 and d1927, he must have been involved towards the beginning of the association. I emailed the association a month ago and haven't received a reply so I thought that I'd try on here.

Does anybody have any Oxford bowling records which may explain John Hewer's involvement in the association?
