Gloucestershire / Somerford Keynes to Swansea
« on: Saturday 05 May 12 21:12 BST (UK)  »
My Gr. Grandparents, Matthew and Jane Arnold left the village of Somerford Keynes with their family around mid 1870s.  I visited the village a couple of weeks ago (April 2012).  I surmised that the reason for leaving (apart from wanting a new start), was economic: agricultural area to industrial area.
I wondered why Swansea?  They passed Bristol (docks, industry), Newport, and Cardiff (same), to settle in Swansea.
Also I wondered how they would have traveled in that time (Somerford Keynes to Swansea), and how long would it have taken?
Does anyone have any ideas or leads for me?
Thanks
Phil

Wiltshire / Criminal trial at Malmesbury Wilts
« on: Monday 25 July 11 02:29 BST (UK)  »
My gr. grandfather was tried at Malmesbury for sheep stealing (oh, the shame).  I have been very fortunate in getting a copy of the witness depositions for trial from the Wiltshire Family Centre.  It made fantastic reading.
Does anyone know if a record of the trial might survive (judge's comments, detailed sentencing comments, etc.).  I have seen the criminal index but it raises some questions as to the place of trial and internment.  Details if necessary.
Thanks...pupetaxe

Wiltshire Completed Lookup Requests / Devizes Sessions
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 17:21 BST (UK)  »
If a trial (1860) is held in Devizes for a crime that was committed around Somerford Keynes, would the bad guy automatically be imprisoned in Devizes or was there another prison they may have been taken to?  Might prison records have survived?
Also, Matthew Arnold (the bad guy was my Gr. Grandfather), had apparently, turned King's Evidence against his fellow bad guys--would there be a record of that anywhere?
Thanks.  Pupetaxe

The Common Room / Criminal Records
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 20:40 BST (UK)  »
I found my Gr. Grandfather in the England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892.  It gives basic information.  He was convicted of sheep stealing in trial in 1860. In Cirencester, Wiltshire.  Would I be able to find further information anywhere (courts, prisons, etc)?

Apparently my GG turned King's evidence against his cohorts and and received a lighter sentence (4 years).
Thanks

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Vasquez109-PM
« on: Saturday 18 June 11 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi:
I don't know how to find where my Gr.Granparents are buried. Can you help me?

Matthew Arnold ~1826-1903

Jane Arnold (nee) Wellavise ~1833-1900

Both died in Swansea, Glamorgan.

The Arnold families lived for the most part in the South/East part of the town, Sandfields, Havod, Landore.  Matthew (as a widower) lived in the Sandfields area for the latter part of his life with his son and family Mark Arnold.  Although this information doesn't guarantee anything it is somewhere to start (was/is there a local cemetery?).
Mark's brother Frank Arnold and Frank's wife Mary are buried in Danygraig Cemetery.  Maybe Matthew and Jane are also there.
How does one go about finding a plot if all you have to go on is names, dates, and residence around time of death?

Family History Beginners Board / EMPLOYMENT RECORDS-1950s'
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 01:30 BST (UK)  »
I have come to the conclusion that the only way I will be able to find my birth father is to find a way to access his employment records for 1951-53.  I know his name, approximate birth year, and that's it.  What I do know is where is was working during those years.  There was a family rumour that he and my mother had moved to Slough when I was 3 months old and she left him and returned to Swansea.
Does anyone know of a way to access employment records from those years?
I currently live in Canada so it's not easy to research especially with source material.

World War One / Medals Issued To Whom?
« on: Monday 23 May 11 02:48 BST (UK)  »
Recently started researching family.  My Uncle...Llewellyn Arnold (Mercantile Marine Reserve), was killed on May 2 1917 aboard HMS Derwent, which was sunk by a marine mine off the coast of La Havre.
I have found his medal entitlement index card (See attached image).  I have been told by Nat Arch researcher that the "S" in column 5 stands for Self in which the medals were to be issued to the entitled recipient.  Llewellyn was listed as "Body Not Recovered for Burial", and, the researcher goes on to say, "I note that your uncle died during the War itself  and so could not have received the medals himself.  But Column 5 in the Naval Medal Roll in the record series ADM 171 covers ‘to whom the medals were sent’:

Roll:  M.M.R. FOUND in COLUMN 5

S. Self (ie the recipient)
FR. Father
MR. Mother
SR. Sister
BR. Brother
W. Wife
Ww. Widow
DR. Daughter
GODMR. Godmother
GODFR. Godfather
GRDFR. Grandfather
UNIV.LEG: Universal Legatee
except there is no listing to whom the medals were sent.

1) Is there any way I can find out if the medals were actually issued and to whom, and 2) Is there an official record that I can read which will tell me exactly what happened to HMS Derwent?

Thanks
