Hi, I'm trying to find this person - I can find records of two baptisms although I'm not sure why there were two. I can find her marriage in 1869 to Lund and subsequent entries on the census. But I can't find her in 1851 or 1861. Her mother Elizabeth Jackman is in Ripon with her mother Ann Dodsworth who remarried after her husband died in 1851. But Jane Elizabeth isn't there. I've tried various spellings but no joy. Hope somebody can help,

Thank you

Hello,

I am trying to trace Agnes McPherson - I can't find her on any census. She is the mother of Emily McPherson. The birth of Emily was recorded in Chorlton 8C, 741 dob 4 January 1876 and I have the certificate which shows Agnes McPherson, domestic servant of Ryders Court Rusholme as the mother. No father is recorded.

I can't find Emily in 1881. In 1891 I think she is listed as Emily McPhearson living with William and Hannah Lythe at 94 Victoria Street, Gorton, shown as Adopted Daughter. This same family had a 'nurse child' listed in 1881 - Emma McFirth with same year and place of birth as Emily McPherson. I can't find a birth record for an Emma McFirth and wonder if she could actually be Emily McPherson.

If I'm right and this is Emily, I don't know what happened to Agnes - before or after the birth of Emily.  I've searched by variations of name and still no joy. I wonder if she was perhaps in Scotland before and after 1876 but I don't know how to start with that. Can anybody help me please?

Much appreciated

Lancashire / Brick wall 1911 Amelia Lythe
« on: Thursday 18 August 11 14:19 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find Amelia Lythe on the 1911 census. She was born in Chorlton, mother Emily Lythe according to familysearch christening record for 28 Jan 1903 at Longsight (St Clements) Lancashire.

Amelia later married Albert Sadler in Dec 1923, also in Chorlton.

I have tried obvious miss spellings and diminutives of Amelia. Emily married Herbert C Jones in Dec 1910 but I can't find Emily, Herbert C or Amelia under Jones either.

Can anybody with better searching skills than me help please?

Very much appreciated - I've been at this for days  :)

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Looking for William inns or Innes on 1881 census
« on: Wednesday 10 August 11 14:59 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I cannot find William Inns or Innes on the 1881 census despite looking for all kinds of variants of Inns. and searching for his wife also. He was born in 1826 in Lidlington, Bedfordshire and married Alice Chandler from Ripon. In 1861 they are shown as Inns at Crakehall, Bedale. In 1871 they are Innes at Romanby, Northallerton. In 1891 they are back to Inns again and in Sadberge, Durham.

Can anybody think of another way to search? Or are they just not there?

Thank you very much

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Robert SMITH in GREAT AYTON
« on: Monday 04 July 11 16:31 BST (UK)  »
I am truly stuck with this one. In Great Ayton there were two families of Smith which I am interested in.

On the 1871 census were George Smith, his wife Elizabeth Watson (born Healeugh and aged 27) and their son John William (5). Also in Great Ayton was Robert Smith (51) born Kirby and married. No wife is shown but two sons - Russel (note spelling) aged 14 and Robert Henry (5). Robert Snr was married to Elizabeth Russel (born Ingleby Cross), presumably why they called their first son Russel.

George died and was buried in Great Ayton in May 1873.

On the 1881 census, Robert Smith is still shown as M, but no wife. Elizabeth, widow of George is shown as a servant but her son is shown as Son. Three more children appear - Thomas, Isabel and Elizabeth. Russel wasn't shown.

The obvious conclusion was that the widow Elizabeth was the mother of these three with Robert as the father. But in the 1891 census Robert is there, shown as M and Elizabeth born Ingleby Cross is also there along with Russel. Did the original wife reappear? I can't tell from the age either as it doesn't fit either Elizabeth exactly.

A further complication is Thomas, born approx 1874 was called Thomas Pedley Smith. Where does Pedley come from? Thomas Pedley Smith is my great grandfather so i am particularly interested in him.

Any help gratefully received

Stella :)

Ayrshire / John McNEIL from SALTCOATS
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 19:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I hope somebody can help me - I'm looking for family of John McNeil b1856 probably in Saltcoats, Ayrshire. He married Mary Elizabeth Fleetwood in Barnsley 20/11/1878 and his father is on the register as John McNeil,Game keeper.

I think he may have had a sister, Mary, who married somebody called Ewer, which is what led me to Saltcoats. She ended up in Leeds with John's widow Mary in 1901 aged 60.

Any information will be gratefully received as I'm stuck  :)

Suffolk / HINES listed as KAY in 1841 Census Occold
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 16:30 BST (UK)  »
Hello

I have seen a couple of references to William Hines (b1801) in the posts - the strange thing is that William Hines and his family are listed as William Kay and so on in the 1841 census for Occold. Althought the age for William (Kay) is indistinct, it is 40 which is what he would have been. By 1851 they are back to Hines and wife Sarah Hines is a widow.

So I wondered if anybody had any idea why that would be? The family would have been new to the village in the late 1830s, coming from Thundersley, via Rayleigh with Hines spelt Hynes at some earlier point.

Any help would be greatly appreciated  :)
