Hi,

Is anyone going to the records office that would be willing to look up a patient being admitted to Whittingham Asylum?

Hi,

Is there any way of identifying this uniform from the collar alone or would this have been used by more than one regiment?

Gloucestershire / Indenture and other information
« on: Thursday 27 December 18 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
I have a copy on cd of an indenture (lease and release I think) from 1833 which talks of property/messuages in Bristol. It also mentions 3 other indentures dated 30 Sept 1793, 24 Jun 1795 and 26 Aug 1812.
Am I ever likely to find these indentures? I'm thinking not but someone may know more.

Also the deceased person on the 1833 document was a salt refiner in Bristol until his death in 1818 but I can't find much information about about him apart from marriage and baptisms. Surely someone that owned property would have left some kind of paper trail??
Any clues on where I could search for more information?

Ross & Cromarty / What can I hope to find on a christening record?
« on: Sunday 17 June 18 19:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I think I have found the christening of an ancestor in LOCHALSH, ROSS AND CROMARTY, SCOTLAND in 1843 but what information could I hope to find on the entry? Would it give details of the fathers occupation?

The father I think originates from Scotland but he is not with his wife and children on the 1841 census in Liverpool and dies just before the 1851 census!!

His wife and 2 children appear in 1841 in Liverpool (1 child has passed away the previous year).
On 1851 census the father is dead and a fourth child is now present. On 1851 and 1861 censuses it says the child Donald was born in Ireland but in 1871 it says Scotland and 1881 (he's now blind) it says Liverpool.

The name of the child is Donald Mathieson and his burial record in May 1890 calls him Donald Kenneth Mathieson.
He is 6 in 1851 and 16 in 1861 giving an approx birth year of 1844/45. The christening record gives a birth year of 1842??

The parents of Donald are Kenneth Mathieson and Margaret Brownbill. The surname Mathieson appears as Matheson and Matthewson in various records. The father Kenneth was a hairdresser.

I don't know why they would have travelled such a distance but they clearly did for Donald to be born elsewhere. Maybe they travelled via Ireland to Scotland and Donald was born on the way?

The hints I get for the father's also take me to Scotland but I am reluctant to add them as I cannot be certain.

Any help appreciated

Scotland / Marriage 1873-74
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 18:27 BST (UK)  »
My ancestor Patrick Naughton (aka Charles Patrick Naughton) served in the Army Reserves and spent almost a year in Glasgow. I cannot find his marriage in any England/Wales records and wonder if he may have married in Scotland. His bride was Lucy Annals who was still single on 1871 census and living in Farnham, Surrey. He relocated to Manchester from 3rd Sept 1874 but their son must have been conceived during his time in Glasgow as he was born 4th April 1875 in Manchester. If anyone could help with this search I would be grateful.
Many thanks

Lancashire / Dobbin (placename) somewhere near Rochdale
« on: Thursday 30 April 15 21:43 BST (UK)  »
I have found a baptism at St. Chads, Rochdale which says abode DOBBIN. I can't find it on any new or old map although there are many roads with the name so it must be a local thing. I want to know if it was near Wardle.

Lancashire / old Salford street map
« on: Saturday 15 February 14 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, Does anyone have an old map of the Salford area C1883 ? I am trying to confirm a street name which appears as BRIDDON street on one document and BRITTON street as another. Are these two different streets or just a spelling error on one of them.
I also have Dawson street and Wilfred street and wondered if they are all in the same area?

Just seen that Briddon Street still exists not far from Strangeways. One document says 9 Briddon Street, Cheetham and the other says 9 Britton Street, Strangeways

Lancashire / Model Lodging Houses Manchester
« on: Monday 01 July 13 19:39 BST (UK)  »
Hi, Does anyone know how many Model Lodging Houses there were in Manchester? I have someone in one on Moreton Street Cheetham on 1891 census, but the only one I can find info on now is Salford Model Lodging House which has now been converted to flats. (Lovely frontage still there though.) Is it one and the same??

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Look up at Lancashire records Office please
« on: Sunday 20 January 13 19:12 GMT (UK)  »
 Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could do a quick look up at the Record office in Preston for me? Its for the Catholic baptisms at St Chad's Manchester.

I have been and found some NORTON baptisms but wonder if the following are also connected.

P133 Thomas NORTON 1871
P387 Patrick NORTON or NECTIN 1875
P388 Mary E NORTON or NECTIN 1875

The parents would be Charles or Charles Patrick Norton and Lucy nee Annals (could read Annells/Annalls/Annal).
I already have Frederick (Fredericus) 1877, Annie (Anna) 1879, Thomas 1881, William (Guliemus) 1883 and Mary Josephine (Maria Josephina) 1885
I would really appreciate some help if you are going anyway.

Many thanks
