« on: Saturday 03 February 24 08:17 GMT (UK)  »
I am asking on behalf of someone who is a decendant of Nisbets who were weavers in Loundoun/Galston parishes, mainly Loudoun.

Archibald Nisbet married Elizabeth Craig, and they had children, family names include Archibald, James, Richmond, Janet, Margaret, Matthew, John, Robert, Jane etc born around 1822)/30's  There are burials recorded in the OPR for the Newmikns Church.

Does anyone have these names in their Nisbet family?

Ayrshire / Darvel
« on: Thursday 31 March 22 12:06 BST (UK)  »
Darvel is about to celebrate 150 years becoming a police burgh and we have decided to collect information and memories of Darvel folks. We're looking for stories and anecdotes and any historical information. If we get enough we would like to have a Darvel book published so if anyone has a connection to Darvel, past or present and would like to pass on some information or their stories, whether it's about your family, work, school, friends, neighbours etc as long as it's relating to Darvel, please let me know.

To give you an idea of what we can use, anecdotes, historical information, old photos or postcards, stories, poems etc

Ayrshire / Loudoun & Galston Family History Information
« on: Friday 29 May 15 10:27 BST (UK)  »
Loudoun Kirk is a 12th century partly ruined kirk with burial ground in the Loudoun parish, near Galston, Ayrshire.

The Friends of Loudoun Kirk have launched an updated website covering mainly Loudoun & Galston parishes.   We have added gravestone inscriptions and photographs as well as the Loudoun OPR burials transcription (courtesy of Claude & Jean Wrathall of the LDS).   We are happy to try to assist anyone researching families in this area.  A Forum as been added to the site which hopefully will make it easier to narrow down research.   I have also a vast number of BMDs for the area which due to copyright regulations, I can't publish but can offer information from them.

Moray (Elginshire) / Help needed with Smith, Knockando
« on: Friday 12 September 14 13:07 BST (UK)  »
John Cumming, a gamekeeper at Allan, Fearn, Ross & Cromarty was the father of Ann Smith's illegitimate son Thomas Smith (b:1858).  There is an entry in the RCE which shows that Ann took John to court.  I can't be sure of who Ann was, she is shown as a domestic servant in Knockando but I am unable to read the name of the place.   Can anyone help, I have attached a section of the entry in the RCE and hope someone might have a better idea about the place name.

Ann's descendants settled in Birnie, Dallas & Forres amongst other places.   We've only just started researching this family so any help anyone can give for either John Cumming or Ann Smith, would be most appreciated.

Ayrshire / Ramsay, Gibson, McAllister, Donaldson
« on: Wednesday 06 February 13 16:50 GMT (UK)  »
Does any of these names mean anything to anyone.
Agnes Donaldson had a dau. Sarah in 1860, and later married Thos Gibson and had about 7 children before Thomas died in 1876 in Auchinleck.
She then lived with James McAllister in Tarbolton, a coal miner from Ireland and had 8 more children, all of them bearing his name.   I have been unable to find out what happened to James, he was apparently well thought of by the family.  Agnes moved to America in 1902 taking most of the remaining children with her but one.
Agnes Gibson her daughter by her marriage to Thos. Gibson, married Archibald Ramsay in Dalry (Ayrs) he was an engine keeper. When Agnes died, her son John registered the death.  Their son died in 1984 at the age of 84 in Dalry/Kilbirnie.  As far as we can see, this was the only family who might point us in the direction of finding out what happened to James McAllister.

Dumfriesshire / Little of Hoddom/Ecclefechan
« on: Monday 06 August 12 10:15 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to piece together the Little family of Hoddom.  The OPR's are quite vague with information and seem to think mother's weren't important enough to mention on birth records.   As far as I know, the Littles I'm looking for were all farmers/farm workers and I would be interested in hearing from anyone who believes their roots go back to Little of Bogside, Shawbea, Park, Newpark, Soupplebank etc

Europe / POW's in Scotland
« on: Tuesday 02 August 11 21:12 BST (UK)  »
Some time ago I posted an article regarding a letter belonging to my grandfather from Albert Spiegler.  Albert was a POW during WW2 probably Ayr or Mauchline, but returned home to Rostock in Germany.   I know he was a grain miller to trade and I would be interested in finding out how to research in tracing this man's family.  Does anyone know how I can trace more on him and his family.   The letter to my grandfather was written  in Dec 1947, one year after he returned home.  Any help at all would be appreciated.

Ayrshire / GORMAN, Symington
« on: Sunday 08 May 11 10:20 BST (UK)  »
A friend has been trying to track an old friend but posting on behalf of someone else means I don't have a lot of information.    The person we're looking for is James Gorman, estimated date of birth about 1923-28, he may have come from Ireland but he and his wife settled in Symington, Ayrshire and as far as we know they had about 6 children.   We don't know whether he went back to Ireland or not.
I know this information is a bit frugal but if it rings any bells,  I'd be happy to hear from you.

Lanarkshire / McKechnie, Wishaw
« on: Friday 07 November 08 14:21 GMT (UK)  »
James McKechnie married Maggie Hendry Gold and they had at least 2 sons, William & George.   However in 1938, Maggie is living with Alexander & Elizabeth in 317 Caledonian Rd, Wishaw and according to her death cert, Alex is her son.  I can find no trace of Alexander's birth, marriage or death, he may be registered under a different surname.  It is also an assumption that Elizabeth is Maggie's grand-daughter.  Has anyone any info on Alexander or Elizabeth, any help would be appreciated.
