Berkshire Lookup Requests / Look up request - Berks Record Office
« on: Monday 15 May 23 12:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi, if anyone is going to Berkshire Record Office in the near future and may have time to spare to do a look up for me, could you let me know?

I am specifically looking for the admission record of someone admitted to the Abingdon Union Workhouse. I have a good idea of the likely year they were admitted.

Thank you, Paul

World War Two / Help trying to find more about L/Bombardier F. E. Fox
« on: Monday 23 September 19 13:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have a family birth certificate from 1944 and the father of the child is named as "Frank Ernest Fox". On the certificate his occupation is cited as follows:

"No 14255735 L/Bombardier R.A. (Bricklayer) of 36 Green Street, Warrington U.D."

I would like to know more about Frank's background/military record/origins but am struggling to pin him down in any searches based upon this information but thought the military number would be the key. I don't know if he was originally from Warrington or there as a result of the war.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Hi, I am looking to see if there is any way of finding out more about this car (make, model etc), which may help to determine the owner (presumably in the driving seat) and the year of the photo, which has been labelled as circa 1908. You can see in the photo the registration plate is KA-1. Any help would be very gratefully received?

Hi

I am looking for help in understanding what is meant by the occupation "Econimist" in 1881 (RG11, 2282, 144, 10) for Elizabeth Heathcock (nee Asbury), born 1850 in Dudley, Worcestershire.

In 1881 she is living at Higher Burraton, Saltash, Cornwall with her husband William (a boilermaker) and their children.

In future years her occupation is not provided. In the 1871 census (RG10, 4895, 78, 45), Elizabeth's occuaption is a "Staymaker" - which I understand to be a specialist dressmaker (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=286544.0).

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Armed Forces / Photo deciphering. Which war and what type of vessel?
« on: Friday 11 January 19 18:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am looking for any insights into the type of vessel shown in the photo, which war, merchant or Royal Navy? A person in the photo is a family relative but we don't know if it is Grandfather (WW2) or Great grandfather (WW1) as both served at sea. The Great grandfather (William Clifford Webster) died in 1918 of an illness received during WW1 and had served on HM Motor Launch ML-318, but it is thought this photo might have been taken during WW2 and include his son, Edward William Webster, born 1919 (he was born after his father died).

Thanks for any observations to try and unravel which one it is.

World War Two / Edward William WEBSTER - born 14 April 1919
« on: Sunday 30 December 18 16:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to find out anything about the naval experiences during World War 2 of Edward William Webster, born 14 April 1919 in Gravesend, Kent. His granddaughter says he either served in the Royal or Merchant Navy, but little is known of his time at sea (where he served, his ship(s), rank etc). Any help would be very gratefully received. Edward survived the war and passed away in 2007 in Gravesend. His grandaughter would like to know more about his wartime experience. Thanks

Hi, I am doing a bit of historical research around the local village where I live. The plan is to try and plot where everyone was living at the time of the 1911 census - and to mark up an historic OS map. I have the summary books for 1911 which covers my village and which is a great starting point and shows I have 232 schedules to look up and transcribe. Problem is some of the main streets in the village (High Street, Low Street, etc) are long and no reference is given to which house number relates to which schedule - in either the summary book or the census records themselves (except very occassionally someone might write their house number down).

Any ideas anyone? Did the enumerators/police work off a map on the night of the census to know which houses to call upon (and so they could also work out which properties fell inside and outside the relevant enumeration district). Has anyone seen any marked up maps used in the 1911 census with schedule numbers highlighted in any local archives?

Cheers for any help. Kind regards.

World War One / Henry Edmund MARTIN, b, 1867, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, 14451
« on: Sunday 27 December 15 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am hoping someone may be able to shed light on the World War I exploits of my father-in-law's grandfather, Henry Edmund Martin.

Henry joined the army late in life. He was born in 1867 in Dublin. We have two of his medals and his 1914-15 Star records his rank as L-Cpl and his regiment as the R. Dub. Fus. and his regimental number as 14451. We know that he was gassed in the war but fortunately survived and went on to live into the 1930s. His Victory medal has the same regiment and regimental number, but his rank is Pte.

Can anyone help in identifying any account of his army deployment, in which theatre he served and where?

Any help would be very gratefully received.

Dublin / William Richard MEMERY married Susan ?
« on: Sunday 27 September 15 16:50 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I am trying to trace a part of my father-in-law's family tree.

William Richard Memery (my father-in law's GGGF) was born in Dublin in c. 1816 (anyone have anything on his birth? and parents?). William married Susan (surname unknown). We don't know the date or location of their marriage and we only have some limited details of their children:

Betsey (b. 8 July 1841)
Mary Ann (b. 29 December 1843) - my father-in law's GGM
William Richard (b. 6 January 1846)

William Richard Memery (b. c. 1816) died Q4, 1879, Dublin South, 2, 522.

Any help filling in any gaps would be very gratefully appreciated.

p.s. my father-in-law believes that the Memery's of Dublin may have originally hailed from Devon. So any help going back further into William Richard's family tree would be most interesting.
