Isle of Man Lookup Requests / Isle of Man passenger lists to Australia
« on: Friday 03 January 14 12:41 GMT (UK)  »
I'm been trying to locate an ancestor of mine who was supposedly born in the Isle of Man and migrated to Australia sometime between 1860 and 1866.

I’ve not been able to locate her on the incoming passenger lists for Australia so wondered if I could find her leaving the IOM.

What ports would she have travelled via to get to Australia and do passenger lists exist from these ports?

My ancestor's details:
Mary Elizabeth McVey (or McVey Smith)
Born about 1845, IOM
Father = John McVee (farmer)
Mother = Mary Elizabeth Macgee
Married in Australia in 1866

Hi, I’m trying to locate this ancestor. The only information I have is that she arrived in Australia about 1863 but I’ve not been able to find any record of her arrival.

Her marriage certificate in Australia says she was born in the Isle of Mann about 1845 although other records suggest she could have been born as early as 1836. She was Roman Catholic.

Her marriage certificate records her father as John Muckvee (farmer) and her mother as Mary Elizabeth Macgee. The ‘Smith’ maiden name appears on some of her children’s birth certificates so I’m not sure what has happened there - a stepfather perhaps? She was a spinster when she married.

I’m hoping the family is on the 1851 census. Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Anne

Roxburghshire / Looking for Adams family in Jedburgh
« on: Thursday 29 December 11 10:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I’m having trouble locating Elizabeth Adams born about 1814-15, a native of Jedburgh.

She arrived in Australia as a single woman in 1839 so I’ve missed the 1841 census and I can’t find a record of her birth in Scotland.

The passenger log records her father as William (a cabinet maker) and mother Elison or Alison – both of Jedburgh. Her religion – Presbyterian. She embarked from Leith.

Her death certificate in Australia records her father as “supposed George Adams (cabinet maker) – mother unknown”. This may be an error. Perhaps George was a relative?

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Anne

Banffshire / Baptisms designed after Lady Deskford and James Olgivie
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 08:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Whilst research my Coull ancestors from Cullen, Banff, I noticed that on two baptisms, the children were designed after “Lady Mary Deskford” (Mary Coull born 1760) and “Mr James Olgivie, eldest son to Lord Deskford” (James Coull born 1761).

Why was this? Was it customary to name children after the local gentry or did they perhaps work for the household? The Coull family were weavers in Cullen.

Any information greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Occupation of Cullen Witnesses
« on: Thursday 28 July 11 07:56 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me decipher a Banff baptism record from 1765?, I can’t work out the occupations of the first and third witnesses, i.e.

“James Coull weaver & Elspet Wiseman had a son born July the 10th & baptised the eleventh (named John). Witnesses John Laing Taylor? John Coull shoemaker, John Coull Faglr.? , Mary Lawrence, Isobel Wiseman & Janet Coull, all in Cullen."

Also, what is the custom for choosing baptism witnesess? Was it customary for them to be grandparents of the child?

Any help greatfully appreciated.

Isle of Man Lookup Requests / Birth of Mary Elizabeth Muckvee or McVeigh
« on: Wednesday 06 July 11 15:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me locate a birth record for Mary Elizabeth Muckvee about 1845 Isle of Man. ‘Muckvee’ is the spelling on her marriage certificate in Australia but on subsequent records her name is variously recorded as McVeigh, McVay or McPhee.

Her father was John (farmer) and her mother was Mary Macgee.

She was married in Australia in 1866 so she likely migrated sometime before then but I’ve been unable to locate a record of her arrival.

I’m afraid I don’t have any further information on her apart from her religion – Roman Catholic.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Anne
