Lanarkshire / Gilmour/Gilmore/Gillmor/Gillmer
« on: Thursday 22 June 17 08:22 BST (UK)  »
Having hit a brick wall researching my great aunt Ellen Gilmour, I ended up trawling through the free Google newspaper archive site looking at the Birth, Marriage & Death announcements in the Glasgow Herald.

If, like me, anybody else out there is stuck finding a Gilmour relative, I have started a spreadsheet with all these names that I was able to read.  Some Glasgow Herald entries are illegible and editions missing, but I've covered part of 1901 then I moved on to 1904 through to 1914.

If anybody would like me to email the Excel spreadsheet I have I'd be more than happy to do so.  I'll post details of my g. aunt Ellen later.

If anybody could advise how to attach a spreadsheet I'd welcome the advice.

Lanarkshire / Will Decipherment Needed Bridgate & Hamilton
« on: Monday 26 September 16 10:53 BST (UK)  »
The father of my gx3 grandmother left the attached property in his Will 1833.  I think I've figured out what area the slaughter house was in.  Here's my very feeble attempt at interpreting it. I've seen his firms name William Allan & Son hamcurers listed at candleriggs in the old post office directories.

"Firstly All and Whole the east most shop and dwelling house above the same of the front tenement (after tenement) after described as lately p? by myself and presently p? by James Ralph with the open area (formerly a dung hill) immediately behind the said shop and the three story brick building (erected by me on the site of what was formerly a stable) adjoining thereto likewise p? by the said James Ralph which subjects are parts and portions of the lands sometime belonging to the deceased Andrew McKie Dyer thereafter to the deceased Richard McKie thereafter to Andrew Dalmahoy and thereafter to Robert Alexander and which are described in the original Titles thereof All& Whole high & ? back & fore with close and pertinents? Lying within the Burgh of Glasgow on the South side of the Bridgegate bounded between the lands of Colin Campbell (now of Robert Clark & others) on the east of the common vennel? on the west  the River Clyde now the public slaughter house on the south and the Bridgegate Street on the north parts.

Secondly All and Whole that piece of ground consisting four falls? or thereby and buildings  thereon bounded the said piece of ground on the north by the church and belonging to Burgher Congregation in Hamilton on the south side by the property of David Torrance on the west by the property of David Torrance Main Street leading past the parish Church of Hamilton to the Leechlee? and on the east by that part still belonging to William Adam and his wife of the piece of ground now disponed which piece of ground above disponed is a portion of All & Whole these thirteen falls?and two tenths of a fall of ground or thereby as presently described in my title thereto p? by my author William Adam Weaver in Hamilton with Consent of Catherine Riddle his wife and his tenants fued? but by the heirs of John Campbell Saffranhill? to John Martin Weaver in Hamilton conform to and as described in the full Charter dated the 14th day of September 1796 and acquired by me from the said William Adam with consent foresaid by Disposition dated 30th March 1826 all lying within the town and parish of Hamilton and shire of Lanark.  Together will all right title and interest which I have or can claim to the several subjects above conveyed with the rents and mails and duties of the same which may be due at my death and to become due in all time coming thereafter and the writs titles and securities thereof and all action and execution competent for recovery of said rents and for exhibition implement and delivery of said writs.  But these presents are granted in Trust for the ends uses and purposes after specified viz".

I told you it was a feeble attempt!!

Lanarkshire / Primary Schools 1920's Ruchill Street, Maryhill
« on: Monday 19 September 16 09:02 BST (UK)  »
Hello again.  I'd like your opinion as to what school registers I should look at when I get a chance to visit the Mitchell.

My Dad's family lived at 5 Ruchill Street (where Framptons is/was I believe).  My Dad would have been ready for school 1928. But he did have an elder brother who would have started  in 1923.  I'd particularly like to see my uncle's record as he died in WW2 and apart from his Merchant Navy service we know little about him.  The family were at No. 5 from 1913 to approx 1930.

I read a previous thread here about schools in Maryhill, by my amateurish look at Google maps etc, I would say they were living pretty much equal distance to the Oakbank school and the one on Viewmount Drive.  What do you think?

Would I just ask to see both school registers?  I would have told you the family were atheists, but got the shock of my life to discover my father was actually Church of Scotland or a least he was when in the army during WW2.  We would never have known.  We were sent to Sunday School, but to!d to make up our own minds regarding religion.

Thank you for your time.

Kincardineshire / Sasines - Fettercairn
« on: Thursday 08 September 16 12:45 BST (UK)  »
Just a general enquiry. I know I can view the Sasine records down in Edinburgh, but is there a local copy anywhere for Fettercairn?

My interest is in the records for the area Mossbank.  My Gran purchased it back in 1947 and had it until approximately 1960.  I've viewed the valuation rolls and electoral registers for that period in Aberdeen a few years back.

I will go to Edinburgh as I've at least a days research to be done there, but can't see that happening anytime soon. Many thanks for reading my post.

Donegal / Burial of 4 year old in 1868
« on: Wednesday 07 September 16 09:18 BST (UK)  »
Where would I begin to find the burial of my Glaswegian born 2nd great uncle?  He was 4 years old when he died in Drumanary, Mount Charles 18th September 1868.

He was baptised in the Catholic faith in Glasgow. His father was UP and mother was Catholic. There was a small obit in the Glasgow Herald noting his death in Donegal and the family were from Watt Street, Glasgow.

Alexander Gilmours father, William, was a captain in the merchant navy so maybe why the family were in Donegal or on holiday perhaps?

Any suggestions where to start would be appreciated. Many thanks. Maria

Midlothian / Catholic Burial, Edinburgh June 1866
« on: Wednesday 18 May 16 16:42 BST (UK)  »
My great x2 grandmother Ellen Dieter (nee Sweeney) died at the Infirmary 30 May 1866 from bronchitis & typhus fever.  Unfortunately her death was not registered by her husband, Bernard Dieter (a German travelling acrobat/contortionist).  I assume he left her behind with their 8 month old daughter.

I have had a search carried out via Mortonhall and they can find no burial records for her.  I've also been told by the Catholic archivist in Edinburgh that all their records are already available at Scotlandspeople.  I've been thoroughly through Scotlandspeople before (using all manner of spellings) and cannot find burial details for her there.  I had also approached Aberdeen University, who have the Catholic archive, but they just reverted me to the archivist in Edinburgh.

Ellen and Bernard had a Roman Catholic wedding service in 1863 in Glasgow.  Their son Constantine was born the following year in Aberdeen and he was baptised at St. Marys in Aberdeen in Mar 1864 and he died in June the same year in Lennoxtown, Campsie.

The circus, The Spanish Circo appears to have arrived in Edinburgh approximately September 1865 and my great gran Catherine Dieter was born in Lasswade on the 16th (no baptism record for her).

From news articles I can trace the circus to Nicolson Street until the end of February 1866, a few months before Ellen died.

The Catholic archivist suggested I approach the church they may have worshiped at, but as a travelling family I very much doubt they attended church very often.

I know Mount Vernon wasn't open in 1866, so where did Roman Catholics get buried in Edinburgh and can anybody advise me which church in Edinburgh at that time was Roman Catholic?  Ellen's usual residence on her death register entry placed her at Kingskettles.  She had been suffering with bronchitis/typhus for 24 days prior to her death.

There was certainly no money for a private burial and my great gran born in 1865 does not appear in the 1871 Census, she doesn't reappear until 1881 living with her uncle Patrick Sweeney in Glasgow as a 15 year old servant.  Bernard is in Kilmarnock on the 1871 Census on his own and dies a pauper in a Manchester Poor House in 1875.

So my great gran is missing for her first 15 years of life and I've no idea where her mother Ellen is buried.  I'm awaiting a response from the Lothian medical archivist, but I'm not hopeful they will be able to shed any light on how Ellen's body was disposed of.

Has anybody used the hard copy archives in Aberdeen? Is it worth my while going up there to look through the hard copies?  I'm running out of options to trace Ellens last resting place.  It will be 150 years since Ellen died at the end of the month and I would dearly like to find her even if its an unmarked paupers grave somewhere.

Many thanks for reading and any advise you folks could offer.
Kind regards - Maria
