Kent / James Hickmott bc1839-44
« on: Thursday 11 May 23 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Looking for details of the origins of a James Hickmott bc1839-44 in Kent prior to 1868 when I know he married Mary Ann Wiles in Bromley. The couple went on to have 12 children between the years 1868 and 1888.

James passed away in 1900 in Bromley so I'm guessing was born there or in one of the surrounding towns or villages but I can't establish exactly where and when.  On his parentage his 1868 Marriage Registration states his father's name as "Samuel" but so far I've been unable to find any matching families in the 1841 -1861 Census Returns.

I'm hoping that as there are a number of Hickmott branches in the Kent area that someone out there may have the details I'm looking for.  Any help appreciated.

Many thanks.

Wiltshire / Ann Day b1797-1801- Bower Chalke
« on: Tuesday 21 June 22 12:10 BST (UK)  »
I am looking into the life of an Ann Day (LCRC-CDB) bc 1797-1801 in Bower Chalke, Wiltshire on Familysearch.

Currently she is shown as a daughter of Sarah Day (LCMG-MSV) 1790-1870 which is most probably incorrect if Sarah's birth date of 1790 is accurate, as she would have given birth at around 11 years of age. I know in these times under English Law girls needed to be 12 years of age to marry but only 10 years of age for sexual intercourse.  The man Sarah married in 1809, Thomas Golding/Goulding would have been around 23yo and she 19 years.

Not sure if it can be proved that Ann is Sarah's daughter or in fact her youngest sibling born to Sarah's mother, Jane Lawes (LCMG-MC9)?

If anyone can help throw some light on this I would be immensely grateful.

Thanks in advance,
Frank

Gloucestershire / William Haynes Marriage Brick Wall
« on: Tuesday 27 April 21 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Good people, I need help...

William Haynes b1710 St.Briavels, Glos  married an Ann ?   sometime in the period (I`m assuming) 1828-1834 but Ann who?

In the 1841-1871 Census Returns the couple are initially in Minchinhampton then later Rodborough where they raised their 11 children.  Ann passed away in 1874 age 64 (Death Registration Vol 6a Pg 226 Oct-Dec). William remarried in 1878 to an Elizabeth Bowley; he passed away 10 years later in 1888.

The only source of information that I am missing is that that proves the first marriage ie where, when and Ann`s maiden name.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Scottish Handwriting Decipher Needed
« on: Sunday 31 May 20 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Need some help deciphering the middle name of a relative born in 1885 in Craigton, Dunbartonshire.

On the Scotland's People site it's been recorded as "VERTIE" which would be unusual as there are no other occurrences of VERTIE in the family.  "BERTIE" would be an obvious choice but his first name is Albert so he's likely to be called Bertie anyway.

Attached is a very cropped image from the registration certificate which I hope someone can decipher for me.

Thanks in advance,
Frank

Canada / HAWKHURST FAMILY - St.John/Queens Counties - New Brunswick
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 11:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Looking for additional information on descendants of the Hawkhurst Family of St John (mainly) New Brunswick.  Specifically the following ancestral line:

Isaac Hawkhurst of Grand Lake, Queens County who married Marion Flowers around 1850?
I have two recorded children:
Bianca Hawkhurst (1852-1928) who married William John MacPherson in 1871 and
Elias Bedford Hawkhurst (1866-1922) who married Alberta Phoebe Brown in 1890.

Elias and Phoebe's children were:
Arthur Verner Hawkhurst (1893-?)
William Stanley Hawkhurst (1898-1949)
Manford Hazen Hawkhurst (1903-?)
Greta May Hawkhurst (1905-?)

My family link to the Hawkhursts above is through Arthur Verner's marriage in 1915 to Jeannie Atwell, one of my maternal Grand Aunts.

I have interrogated the online databases available and have a certain amount of information I am willing to share but have a few vital gaps in my knowledge.

Look forward to hearing from anyone with strong family connections to the Hawkhursts.

Devon / HAYNES, Jenny Burton - NEWTON ABBOTT
« on: Saturday 04 November 17 10:09 GMT (UK)  »
I need some help/advice on tracking down my relative Jenny Burton HAYNES, Born 1873. She was 1 of 14 children born to Thomas Haynes (1841-1912) and Mary Jane Slocombe (1839-1913) of Wolborough, Newton Abbott.

I have tracked the family through the census returns and her name disappears between the 1881 and 1891 returns, when she would have been between 8 and 18 years old. I have been unable to find any marriage or death record using the usual free online resources.

Can anyone help or advise?

Somerset Lookup Requests / BURTON, Henry - Nettlecombe and/or Old Cleeve
« on: Friday 15 July 16 10:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi

One of my latest brick walls is Henry Burton.  All I have so far from the usual online resources and especially the Old Cleeve Parish Records is the following:

married Grace WATTS on 16 Nov 1761 at St. Andrews, Old Cleeve.

I believe Grace was born about 1733 in Nettlecombe to Thomas Watts and Mary Brownson (or Brownfern on some sites).

Their 3 kids that I have traced between 1762 and 1772 were born either Old Cleeve or Nettlecombe.

My brickwall is that Henry does not appear in any of the parish records for those two villages or any of the other surrounding villages as far as I can tell.

Can anyone help with some possible candidates?

Thanks in advance.

Lanarkshire / HOWATT / HOWIT / HAMILTON / DAVIDSON FAMILY - Govan / Barony
« on: Friday 10 January 14 12:17 GMT (UK)  »
Been a while since I've been on here but I'm now back on the track of my great grandparents family and have so far established the following:

John Hamilton Howat(t) b 7/12/1805 Govan married Helen Davidson bc 1806 Barony on 25/11/1831 Barony.

i believe John descended from George Howat(t) bc 1780 Govan and Jane Hamilton bc 1870 Govan.

I have 4 children for John and Helen (based on census returns 1841/1851 checked via GenesReunited):

James bc 1832
Jane bc 1834
George bc 1837
Jane bc 1840

Experience tells me that with gaps between the above children there were probably others. I found a David Howat(t) also born 1837 who might fit but am not convinced he's the same family.

Any help establishing names, dates, places etc would be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Lanarkshire / 1901 Census - Atwell - Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 20 January 10 09:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I'm still trying to piece together my Atwell family members and have now come across a possible third marriage of my Grandfather.  I am hoping the 1901 census will reveal these additional family details and would therefore be grateful for a lookup please.

My Grandfather is James Lawther Atwell b1878 Glasgow - he's probably living in Govan or Partick around this time.  I know he may have at least two children by this marriage; John and Alfred who will still be very young, perhaps 2 and 1 respectively.

I already have his marriages in 1906 and 1921 so I'm guessing this will be his first wife and family, possibly married sometime between 1896 and 1900 in Glasgow.

Please note the family name Lawther could be spelled "Lauther" or "Lauder".

Many Thanks in advance.

Frank
